We always have the window open so it's usually the sound of birdsong that wakes me up.
For obvious reasons we wake later in the winter months.
A friend of mine tried setting his alarm for an hour earlier that he was waking up (say 3am)
This way he found that if he switched off the alarm (half asleep) he then went back to sleep for another three hours or more.
He swears by this method, but after a bit he found that his body started waking up earlier than the alarm. He had to keep setting it earlier and earlier but eventually he couldn't get to sleep when he went to bed !
It's a bit like trying to flatten out that bubble in the wallpaper, no matter how much you chase it around it's going to stop somewhere. I suppose sleep (as you get older) is similar to the bubble and the amount of sleep we need is just moved around to a different time.
Interesting subject.

I'm doing a bit of research about BR employees who worked on the railway between the period 1957 to 1987.
Did anybody on here work for BR in any capacity during this time?

That's a great photograph Firbeck !

Other things I learnt as a trainspotter
Sprinting 100 yards at record speed to elude the shed foreman.
Seeing how flat you could make a penny.
Finding out how hard it was to wash both red & blue biro from your shirt sleeve.
How to remove grit from your friends eye with the folded corner of a piece of paper.
Matching countless numbers to names in your minds eye.
Writing things down accurately at breakneck speed.

A little scary too. The box was like an elongated pram with pram like wheels, no top and the chap was lying horizontal in it.
-
Not forgetting Kings & Castles, Derby Winners and famous people from history and literature.
-
Trainspotting gave me a thorough knowledge of the UK's geography and the names of far away lands.

#3 No Compo, these people were not students. They looked (apart from the chap in the box) like ordinary people of the period.
Thinking about it again the two people could well have been perhaps "parents" of the (as my Aunt put it) "poor unfortunate"

The other day for no reason a long ago trip to Goose Fair came into my mind.
It must have been about 1957, I was with my Auntie and I can remember her saying, hold my hand so you don't get lost.
I remember it was dark and of course there were hundreds and hundreds of people milling about so this was a distinct possibility.
I was fascinated by the sights & lights and remember the sound of the noisy generators, the pop music of the day blaring out, the taste of brandy snap, toffee apples and candy floss.
As I was thinking about all of this one particular vision came back and it did haunt me for years....
We were making our way through the crowds and I noticed someone coming towards us wheeling a rather long low black box on wheels, it was almost like an open pram, no an open coffin !
As they got closer I realised that there was a man laid out in the box dressed in a dark suit. They stopped momentarily next to us and I could see that he was looking up at all of the coloured lights twinkling and flashing in the darkness. He did not move but his eyes darted from side to side, half excited and half afraid.
Then for a few seconds he looked at me straight in the eyes and seemed to mouth some words and half lifted a hand, a dribble came from the side of his mouth and I looked away. Just then there was a surge from behind and we moved on into the illuminated, noisy darkness.
I asked my Aunt who the man was and she said he was a poor unfortunate but I didn't ask her what that meant.
Much later as we left and were walking past the cemetery I spotted them again. This time the man was being lifted slowly and painfully out of the box by two people. They positioned him next to the graveyard wall and he leant back mouth gaping, eyes looking up to the night sky. I did not see what happened next as we hurried to cross the road and walk down Mansfield Road. I looked back but could see nothing....
That night in bed I could not sleep and it all kept coming back to me. Why was he in a box? Were they returning his body to his grave after having one last visit to the fair? Why did he look at me? What was he trying to say? Eventually I must have fallen into a troubled sleep.
The following year when asked if I wanted to go to the fair I declined and had some extra pocket money instead.
Anyone else remember seeing this man?

Has anyone ever heard of Manton Prams in Nottingham?
One of my friends has put a photograph of one of them being pushed across the railway line at Grantham for the "Picture of the Month" - June 2015.
You can see what they look like at http://www.returntograntham.co.uk
If you have any information about the firm please let me know.

I often wish I could return to some of those days and enjoy those moments, now long gone...

I always wonder how nature has somehow caused us to develop into beings who can think and ask questions of ourselves about the universe and time etc etc.
A bit weird really, over time we have been cleverly formed from the basic bits & pieces of the universe into a set of clever bits & pieces that end up thinking about the original bits & pieces....
On that thought I going to take the dogs for a walk, I wonder if they think about it?
One of the dogs is called Alfie, I'll ask him if he knows what it's all about......

We all have I am sure lasting memories of the areas we lived in or visited during our younger days in Nottingham.
Just imagine.....
Wouldn't it be great then if someone could build a very large model showing the city as it was before development and showing lots of the old landmarks before they were swept away? A sort of 3D birds eye view, a larger version of the sort of thing model railways are built of.
We could then walk along all those forgotten streets again, or even do another circuit of the railway system...
Looking at some of the photographs & maps posted on here there seems to be enough reference material.
I suppose the biggest factor in these times is money.
It could be housed in somewhere like Wollaton Hall for instance.
Ahh well, back to my thoughts, off out with the dog...

Does anyone know the current population of Nottingham?
Also what was it say in the 1960's, how does it compare to today?
What area have grown and now become part of Nottingham.
I do know that the Clifton Estate expanded the boundaries of Nottingham when it was built, but how about other areas?
Just interested...that's all...

When old farts pass on and become the "ghosts of old farts", do the "old farts ghosts" continue to get older?
Do you somehow remain an old fart or can you go back to being a young know all?

Thanks Cliff Ton, I think the lower pic is the right place.
There is also a sign on the left but cannot make out what it says.

I have vague memories of going to have my haircut during the mid 1950's at a place called "Henry's" off Wilford Road.
Does anyone remember this place or have any photographs.
In my minds eye I can also see a sign that said "Slipper Baths" or something like that nearby.
