  1. I went back to Kinglake Street (well, Place as it is now) tis weekend to show my daughter where she spent her childhood.  Oh my, changed beyond recognition.  My parents ran the shop opposite the school from 1966 to 1975.  I think I can remember someone posting a photo a couple of years ago - can anyone help me please as I would love a picture to show her.?

Apologies if I am using the wrong forum - please let me know!!

  2. When did the hospital close please can anyone tell me?  I had my daughter there in 1974 but can find no reference of it being a maternity hospital?  At the time there was also The Firs and Peel Street, not sure if the City Hospital was used as a maternity unit as well.

I have been away from the site for a couple of years - so glad to have managed to get back on!

  3. When I lived by Beeston Marina I was walking home when several policemen on motorbikes came past, very slowly, followed by a limo and more police at the back. I thought I recognised the car's occupant so tapped on the window and waved. Wonder I didn't get arrested - saw on the news later that it was Princess Anne visiting Plessey and using their helipad!

Also working at the old Queen Street post office we used to get various personalities who were appearing at the Theatre Royal coming in. I served Brian Rix, Rod Hull and Alan can't remember who was married to Diana Dors amongst others.

  4. You rarely hear passengers on buses saying to the driver where they are going - not round here anyway as it is a flat fare - they just plonk down their £2 or show a pass. They are usually engrossed with their phones anyway! It fascinates me on my way to work in a morning - I pass the journey counting the number of 'silent' travellers. I look forward to the day someone realises they are on the wrong bus............

  5. #1 there was a very lucrative phone box near the fire station on Tamworth Road in Long Eaton! As a Brownie we had to keep 4d in our uniform pocket for emergencies.(along with other items such as safety pin and piece of string) I expect cub scouts had to do the same? Then it went to a tanner I believe or was it a threepenny bit?

  6. I hated school dinners, except for the fish we had on Fridays and cornflake tart. I once wrote a note allegedly from my mum to say I was allergic to mashed potato and mustn't be forced to eat it. Unfortunately I was sussed out when I got carried away with my masterpiece and embellished it with threats of setting the police on to the teachers if they carried on making me eat it............

One week I didn't hand in my five bob, intending to go to the chippy each day instead. However I blew the lot on the first day in the chippy and sweet shop, sharing my hoard with my friends. For the rest of the week I had no dinner, and each evening when mum asked what we had had that day I had to make something up. I Never did it again!! :)

  7. #16 so how do you feel about the modern tunes Chullah, I love the 'traditional' tunes and remember many hymns from school assemblies and Sunday School. I was at a wedding a few months ago but didn't recognise the tunes to any of them!

My favourites are 'O Jesus I Have Promised' and 'Onward Christian Soldiers' :)

  8. I was working at MFI when the Bier Kellar opened, we were open until 9 on Friday nights and could hear the noise from upstairs. I remember the manager once standing on a table and banging on the ceiling with a brush after our customers were complaining - not that they could have possibly heard it! We would go there on a Thursday night, used to call them Karl and the Idlebu**ers. Had some really good times, pity the disappeared without trace. Went on a coach trip to the one at Sheffield once, wasn't there a night club close by called the Fiesta?

  9. My younger brother Gregory was at Roland Green, I think it would have been mid 70s. He was expelled for continually having time off to act as lookout for those outfits who used to sell you a bag of rubbish for a tenner, which was supposedly full of electrical items and perfume. He had to be the first in the crowd with his money to 'buy' one, so the others could see it was genuine. Anyway once my sister and I stood behind him and held his arm down at the vital minute so at least one person did actually get the goods!!
