  1. I used to work in the chip shop on Summers Street, the owners' son was friendly with the lads who worked in Pete's and we all used to go to the pictures. We had a cafe part to this chippy, I used to put all my tips in the juke box. I worked there until my dad decided I was ignoring my school work so came up and dragged me home. I was mortified!!
  2. I went back to Kinglake Street (well, Place as it is now) tis weekend to show my daughter where she spent her childhood. Oh my, changed beyond recognition. My parents ran the shop opposite the school from 1966 to 1975. I think I can remember someone posting a photo a couple of years ago - can anyone help me please as I would love a picture to show her.? Apologies if I am using the wrong forum - please let me know!!
  3. When did the hospital close please can anyone tell me? I had my daughter there in 1974 but can find no reference of it being a maternity hospital? At the time there was also The Firs and Peel Street, not sure if the City Hospital was used as a maternity unit as well. I have been away from the site for a couple of years - so glad to have managed to get back on!
  4. I've missed something - been poorly a few days! Do the last ten topics come up still or do I have to scroll down to see which is most recent? Would hate to miss someone's birthday or any other burning issues
  5. Whatever happened to disposable cameras when you just pointed and pressed the shutter? Or the good old polaroid - instant results though it was a bit bulky to cart around!
  6. Belated felicitations Chulla, hope you enjoyed all the stickjaw goodies!!
  7. Recently turned 63 and still another year before I can have a bus pass! You're as old as you feel, and when you stop feeling you're old..... My husband is 2 weeks older than me
  8. When I lived by Beeston Marina I was walking home when several policemen on motorbikes came past, very slowly, followed by a limo and more police at the back. I thought I recognised the car's occupant so tapped on the window and waved. Wonder I didn't get arrested - saw on the news later that it was Princess Anne visiting Plessey and using their helipad! Also working at the old Queen Street post office we used to get various personalities who were appearing at the Theatre Royal coming in. I served Brian Rix, Rod Hull and Alan can't remember who was married to Diana Dors amongst others.
  9. It's not a senior moment Ian, it's now a CRAFT moment - as in Can't Remember A Flipping Thing.......
  10. You rarely hear passengers on buses saying to the driver where they are going - not round here anyway as it is a flat fare - they just plonk down their £2 or show a pass. They are usually engrossed with their phones anyway! It fascinates me on my way to work in a morning - I pass the journey counting the number of 'silent' travellers. I look forward to the day someone realises they are on the wrong bus............
  11. My maiden was Thomas - can't get more Welsh than that, yachi da boyo!!
  12. Too true Benjamin, and they don't bother with christenings either! My gran was very superstitious and wouldn't have an 'unchurched' baby in the house.
  13. The vicar at that church refused to christen my daughter when I admitted I was a single mother! Talk about 'suffer little children to come unto me'. I took rather an ungodly delight in seeing it demolished...........
  14. #1 there was a very lucrative phone box near the fire station on Tamworth Road in Long Eaton! As a Brownie we had to keep 4d in our uniform pocket for emergencies.(along with other items such as safety pin and piece of string) I expect cub scouts had to do the same? Then it went to a tanner I believe or was it a threepenny bit?
  15. We always used to hold our collar 'until we saw a dog if we saw an ambulance.
  16. #3481 My mum used to say you could tell if eggs were bad because the lion would be holding its nose Queues at bus stops - it's just every men for himself when a bus arrives.
  17. I have developed a taste for historical novels, particularly about the Tudors. Am on the third book in a trilogy about the Boleyns - The Constant Princess, The Other Boleyn Girl and The Boleyn Inheritance. Fascinating reading, though I suspect there is a lot of poetic licence!!
  18. #22 my cousin calls them CRAFT moments instead of senior moments. As in 'can't remember a f**ing thing'
  19. My earliest memory of him was when he fought Sonny Liston as Cassius Clay, I was about 8 at the time. A truly great character, RIP x
  20. I hated school dinners, except for the fish we had on Fridays and cornflake tart. I once wrote a note allegedly from my mum to say I was allergic to mashed potato and mustn't be forced to eat it. Unfortunately I was sussed out when I got carried away with my masterpiece and embellished it with threats of setting the police on to the teachers if they carried on making me eat it............ One week I didn't hand in my five bob, intending to go to the chippy each day instead. However I blew the lot on the first day in the chippy and sweet shop, sharing my hoard with my friends. For the rest
  21. I left Nottingham about 20 years ago and our local paper is 'The Sentinel' but I keep asking for an Evening Post. I enjoy the Daily Mail - and get ribbed continuously at work for doing so - as I enjoy the cryptic crossword. Not that I have ever completed it!
  22. #16 so how do you feel about the modern tunes Chullah, I love the 'traditional' tunes and remember many hymns from school assemblies and Sunday School. I was at a wedding a few months ago but didn't recognise the tunes to any of them! My favourites are 'O Jesus I Have Promised' and 'Onward Christian Soldiers'
  23. #32 - The TV series 'Blockbusters' was filmed at Lenton, and Jimmy Cricket was the warm up man for some of the shows.
  24. I was working at MFI when the Bier Kellar opened, we were open until 9 on Friday nights and could hear the noise from upstairs. I remember the manager once standing on a table and banging on the ceiling with a brush after our customers were complaining - not that they could have possibly heard it! We would go there on a Thursday night, used to call them Karl and the Idlebu**ers. Had some really good times, pity the disappeared without trace. Went on a coach trip to the one at Sheffield once, wasn't there a night club close by called the Fiesta?
  25. My younger brother Gregory was at Roland Green, I think it would have been mid 70s. He was expelled for continually having time off to act as lookout for those outfits who used to sell you a bag of rubbish for a tenner, which was supposedly full of electrical items and perfume. He had to be the first in the crowd with his money to 'buy' one, so the others could see it was genuine. Anyway once my sister and I stood behind him and held his arm down at the vital minute so at least one person did actually get the goods!!
