  1. When we moved from Hyson Green to Wilford in the late 50's, I used to travel from Wilford to the Windley School on Forest road - on my own - on the bus. On my way home, I used to "drop off" the 43 trolleybus as it slowed down for the junction in the overhead outside Brurton's where the 40 and 47 turned off to go dowm Greyfriar gate to Wilford Road.

I used to hit the ground running, slowed down and dived down Broadmarsh to get the 14 to Ruddington. I only recall coming a cropper and going ar$e over tip about twice................

This isn't Brian Draper by any chance, is it??

  2. Thanks for the correction Tony, it was Grove not Drive as I posted. Been a long time!

I have searched high and low for John Booth, he seems to have gone into the woodwork. Maybe he migrated to another country?

His Brother in Law, Bill (Lou) Blair, who married Johns Sister, lives somewhere on the Cotgrave Estate. An ex Cotgrave fitter contacted me and said he would ask his Dad who lives near Lou, to ask Lou to email me. The feller let me down!

I have searched the telephone white pages for both "Lou" Blair and John Booth to no avail..

  3. Ayup Foxy, yep, your talking about all my old teenage mates, drinking buddies. There was also Stu Stenson who lived off London Road too!!

John moved to Wilford as Tony posted, his Dad had an wholesale Sunday Newspaper business there and Johnnie worked with him delivering to all the newsagents shops around Wilford, Clifton and West Bridgeford when he wasn't working overtime at Cotgrave pit.

I lost contact with Glen and Stu after I married the first time around, kept in touch with Boothy though.

He married a girls we all nicknamed "Clarence" after the cross eyed lion! They eventuall went to Zambia, where John worked on a contract for a few years. He and his wife tried hard to persuade me and the first wife to go with them.

He dropped by after he had returned, around 1972 or thereabouts. Then not long after that my ex and myself and kids moved north to North Yorks to live and work, I lost contact with him after that.

He used to live on Lamorna Drive in Wilford when I first knew him, I'd love to make contact with him, if he's still alive!!! Been many years now!

I had a letter from Clem a couple of years back now, his son Jason passed a message on to him and his wife Sheila for me. They still live in Cotgrave, though not at the house where they first lived after they got married!

  4. The Rifleman, Kirkewhite Street East, my old haunts, The Sir Richard Arkwright on Arkwright Street and the TBI at Trent Bridge.

There was a pub on the corner of Bosworth Rd and Briar Street Clifton Inn??? Then just up Bosworth Rd was the "Stute" not technically a pub, but still a watering hole for me sometimes working at the pit.

Across the road and a little up towards Trent Bridge on Arkwright Street was a Shippo's pub, can't recall it's name, and on the corner of Kirke-White Street and London Road was another pub thats name elludes me.

  6. Friends Tele smelly 56 channels and nothing on..

Only 56 Den??? We have over 20 movie channels! I watch live UK soccer, when I have time, at least two matches live on Saturdays! plus mid week games, plus German league!

Then all that learning on the discovery and history channels. Sh!t, I have getting on for 200 channels, maybe more! :P

  7. I had a Uniden system years ago that had a polarmount sytem, I never ever got it to track right no matter how many hours spent twiddling and tweaking.. eventually a trade off was accepted by setting it to receive a good reception on sky etc, with a weaker signal on the other sats I seldom watched. ..

I reckon if you want it 100% you'll need the man with the setting up device .. whatever that may be!

I had a "BUD" Big Ugly Dish for many years, most important detail!! The "mast" has to be dead plumb!!!! half a degree out anywhere and you are thousands of miles off target!! DON'T use a spirit level!! They are notoriously inaccurate! Use a plumb bob!

I have three "saucers" at the moment, thats the little dishes dedicated to one commercial satellites, I will be upgrading my dishes soon though so as I can watch more birds.

I'm on the lookout for another BUD so I can mount an array of LNB's to it for different set ups.

I watch 11o, 119 and was watching the Canadian Nimiq1, but after Belvue Express and Dishnetwork changed to Nagravision2 encryption, have only been able to get hole of the "fix" for Dishnetwork.

BTW, check lyngsat website out, all you want to know about whats up there!!

Also al7bar is the best forum for satellite viewing hobby!! Probably the biggest too with over 100,000 members!!

  8. The problem with natural disasters is they happen at the most innapropriate time and place. No matter how well prepared we think we are, they will always get the upper hand on us.

New Orleans was only part of the area affected, something like twice the size of the UK. The coast line from the Pan Handle of Florida to west of New Orleans was hit bad. Mississippi took the brunt. Katrina also scored big as far north as Kentucky, so politics had nothing to do with the so called "slow responce".

Major infrastructure was down for over thousands of square miles, roads were damaged, bridges down, electricity was and still is out to millions, telephones out and still are, plus the marvel of the 21st century, cell phones out. Even today, cell phone coverage is almost nil in most of the affected areas.

Ham radio has helped and is still being used by thousands of hams to aid in communications of welfare etc.

New Orleans was built by the French, at that time AT SEA LEVEL, now due to the type of soil, below sea level. All is not lost!!! Sacramento, that is "Old Sacramento" was the same, it was built up one full story, so the streets are 10 feet higher than when the city was founded. Although it's a tourist area these days, most don't realize when they are walking it's streets that they are actually walking at the second story level!! Maybe Louisianan's should look to Californians for the answer to save that wonderful city.

Are any of us prepared???? NEVER! not in our private lives nor the way we live.

I live west of the Mississippi River, west of one of the biggest and most active fault lines in the USA, The New Madrid fault! Last time "she" moved was in the 1800's! What would happen today??? Well, St.Louis and Memphis would suffer catastrophic damage! Not to mention many other major towns and cities in the Mississppi river valley. God only knows how many tens of thousands would die in that one!
