  1. Always remember going to Mablethorpe when I was a kid and heading for Monty's chip shop. A chap named Gilbert seemed to be in charge and could he cook fish and chips. No matter when you went in it was always fresh cooked and piping hot. I believe the shop is still there but I would imagine Gilbert is long gone. Has anyone been there recently?

  2. I remember my grandma living in a terraced house with an entry every two houses . This meant that the yard was shared  and at the bottom of it were the coal houses and outside loos. Winter was not the time to want to go to the library as my grandad called it, although his trick of lighting a candle and putting an upturned clay plant pot over it stopped things freezing up. The entry ceiling was always covered in flaking paint, although I did manage to clear a lot of it with my toy helicopter, the one that you launched with a serrated pull. The other problem was that I covered all and sundries with the aforesaid flaky paint so that led to the helicopter being grounded for a while. Happy days.

  3. It's a good job the PC brigade weren't about when Hitler was running amok. I don't think they would have got far with Maggie either. I didn' t particularly like the woman or agree with some of her policies, but nobody can take it away from her, nobody pushed Britain about while she was in charge. The PC culture has done untold damage to this country, the language has been cannibalised to the point where youngsters could be speaking a foreign tongue for all you know. This needs to be stamped out before it becomes the norm. As Jill pointed out some of our ancestors gave the ultimate to keep this country free, we owe it to them to make sure that is the way it stays or their sacrifice will be pointless.

  4. It happens because the rest of us allow it to . It's high time somebody got hold of the situation and made it quite clear to those who leave mess everywhere that it is not acceptable. We all have a vote and if the people running the show will not do anything we should make it clear that our vote can go elsewhere. It would do some of our petty beaurocrats good to shake them out of their comfort zone by pointing out their job is not for life and their nice fat pension needs to be earned.

  5. Also got my diabetic review coming up. When I asked for the paperwork for the blood test I was asked if I wanted to book my flu jab as well. I pointed out to the young lady concerned that I usually had the jab at the same time as my review and was told that was fine. The appointment was duly made.......October 10. Before I had left the health centre my mobile was singing with the text confirming the appointment. Bu66er me, a letter arrived this morning saying I had not responded to the offer of a review this year and did I want one. On querying this it turns out the reception computer does not talk to the one in the data office so letters are sent out irrespective of if you have responded or not until the date of the appointment being completed. What a waste of time and resources.

  6. It would only take Tesco and Wilkinsons to pull out and the place would be dead. No criticism of the other traders but there is nothing to pull shoppers in to the town. Ashfield council have done the town no favours with parking charges and lack of interest, instead concentrating on Sutton. Bulwell and Arnold seem to attract shoppers without much problem and have plenty of choice of outlets. If nothing is done soon Hucknall will simply become a dormitory town.

  7. By the time the youngsters of today grow up they are going to be ill equipped to cope with life in the real world thanks to these stupid ideas. I have never heard such rubbish as some of these protectionist ideas. Life is not fair but you cannot live in a nanny state forever. It does no harm for the kids to learn the rigours of life at an early age. How are they supposed to learn how to cope if you don't expose them to risk in the first place?. The fact that my teacher wrote in red pen never bothered any of us and if we didn't pass an exam we had failed it. There was no fancy phrase used to avoid hurting our feelings. It would not be a bad thing for kids to learn the real way the English language is intended to be used instead of the pussyfooting cannibalize version offered to them now.

  8. The ones that need sorting out are the top people that allow talentless people to get these wages in the first place. Some of the news readers can't pronounce words correctly, others seem to think that it is all about them when they are interviewing. No sooner than they have asked a question, but they are interrupting the person trying to reply. This is not the sign of a good journalist, even if they do not agree with the answer they should at least have the courtesy to allow it to be given. Stop the licence fee and let them fend for themselves if they think they are so good.

  9. While people keep going to these fancy restaurants and paying extortionate prices for the privilege is there any wonder that these celebrity chefs make a fortune. The portions are not value for money, you could produced far more for a lot less yourself. I know you are paying for staff and cost of production, but there are limits. When I look at menus it is usually for steak but I am put off when the price for a steak weighing no more than eight ounces is twice the price I pay at the butcher I use for a kilo. Mark up is one thing but rip off is another.
