  1. Wow cliff ton, your family must of been very organised to have something like that to pass down through the generations! Thank you for taking the time to upload it, I was interested about the house builders in the Carlton area because they seem to be of a slightly unusual design for council houses (which they originally were built for) the houses have each been given a fairly substantial plot of land each with ample room at the side for extension or a large garage. I believe that before they were built it was all farm land and I just wondered if there were any photos out there of
  2. Hi, I wondered if any of you knew of the major house building companies exsisting in Nottingham around the late 1940s/early 50s. I’m after some information regarding the houses built at the top of Southdale road and oak dale road in Carlton. Or if anyone has any memories or photos of them being built that would be fantastic. Thank you for taking the time to read
  3. Wow thank you philmayfield for your excellent reply, I had no idea about the national grid back up station so that would explain it’s still tight security.. once again thank you you’ve answered a question i’ve always pondered
  4. Hi, I recently walked around thurgarton and near the priory up a narrow country lane, there is a building on the right which has high barbed wire fencing and bollards and hedges next to very dense trees so you cannot see anything. 5. I'm sorry to hear of the passing of Firbeck, my condolences to all who knew him. Thank you both for replying so quickly and informatively, I find it absolutely fascinating that something so terrifying became such a reality that government's all over the country were expecting the worst. I wonder if there is anything still down there such as the expected damage map which firbeck referred to? i can see on google earth about the untouched area of green... would love to have a look round but looks quite private and concealed with houses surrounding it. Can anyone e
  6. Hi all, first time poster but long term lingerer! i first came to nottstalgia because of a thread from nearly 10 years ago regarding nuclear bunkers of nottigham Firbeck, the gentleman in the post spoke of his uncles house at the side of western boulevard near to the city hospital and I wondered if anyone had managed to pinpoint where abouts this house was? I know some people have said that he might of ment the bunker behind the five ways pub but I don't think he did. The bunker he describes was in a grand house's garden and he later went on to post he had looked
