We went to see Richard Thompson a couple of years ago - don't know why.  SO boring that we left after about 30 mins

Classic example of what lights your candle, seen Richard Thompson over 30 time's, always superb! The 'electronic' album 2014 was a  'return to form'. Only time I saw him in Nott's was at the Royal Centre about'94.

Agreed, Denny & Thompson are the best period..

Anybody attend the Fairport Convention, Convention..was at Rock City about '81 Broadcast live  with John Shaw on Radio Trent. There were at least two of these, won free tickets to the First..

When it comes to having an opinion on music, everybody eventually turns into their parents.

Interesting observation, I always liked what my parents listened to musically as a youngster. Guitar oriented blues & Jazz

Remember thinking when aged late Twenties..well what now..thing is you always found something new. Currently listening to alot of lo-fi early rockabilly..passion and poke!

Here's what the area looked like in the halfway stage. The back-to-backs have been demolished, but the bus garage hasn't appeared yet.

For reference I've marked Manvers Street; and F & G is the Fox and Grapes (Pretty Windows).

Thanks, This pic is really interesting.. firstly there is no open market space, guessing the pic is early twenties, the archways I remember are just before the rounded corner on the left Manvers St, ( this picture view) they were still there in the early nineties.

Great pic, with cart, toilet, girl circa 1890 for comparison.

Pic here  is inconclusive regarding this, My theory that some of the buildings on Southwell Rd look older  than the bus station hangs true I'm thinking..

  4. Somewhat taken the wind out of what I am now posting Peveral Peril,..

Remember playing in the woods, having a robust time, got some wood which I made a bow an arrows from. Coloured in with felt tips to give it an authentic vibe!

AG, you are correct about the well kept grass near the spring, that area seemed very Tranquil to me, compared to the hustle & Bustle of the forest, The trees overhang the grass and path, Tranquil until a train came along!

  5. No need to apologise AG, just me being thick! I have no living memory of how the railways once dominated the landscape, intresting how the racecourse had its own staton..love to see a picture!

Well chuffed with remembering the 'water feature' think this was where the wooden sleepers were that my memory has confused with the gate onto the railway.

Also regarding the 'spring', I also remember drinking the water!

Is it still possible to walk through the woods? top path down the bank to the the bottom path and what was the gate to Colwick Rd?

Looks like it was 1 building back from the junction but if you compare it to the road on the right on both pictures the theatre would have been on the first piece of land next to the chemists where the gardens are now.

The Bank? on the far corner of the junction is still the same building.

The Auditorium stretched back behind the houses, now shops, on Gregory Blvd.

View from opposite side of road on this link.

As well as the bank, the building on the extreme right looks like it could still be there also.

Love to know what's written on the walls of the old shop on the left..

Called Holmes, All Colours? Is the best I can do with my zoom/diction! capabilities!

  7. AG, your map left me somewhat baffled, I'm I right in thinking the railway ran directly in front of the racecourse? Where would the railwaymans house be, in between the two arrows? Why was that area referred to as the icehouse?

Off for a couple of paracetamol! ;)

  8. Thanks Cliffton, Think it was the Ginger Tom, then something else, one word, but not the Starting Gate that was roughly 7f from the winning line.

Beekay, you described the kissing gate (thanks Jill, never heard that before) perfectly as I remember it, looking at Google it's no longer there!

  9. Don't Recall any hut's as a child, didn't vist this part of Nott's for over a decade. in the early 80's, remember some hut's other side of Greenwood Road, incorporated with a school, was visting friends living at flats on Colwick Road. walked bleary eyed around a car boot!

  10. Thanks AfferGorritt, looks to be taken from the Greenwood Rd side?

Extreme right corner there was  another path, a little down the hill and left into the woods was were the tree with the carvings was.

Things like 'AB was here'  "Wx + YZ' loveheats with dates, most probably from the 40"s or 50"s. Seemed ancient to me, the oldest I could have been was seven!

Beekay, think I remember where your talking about, the cave rings a bell there was a water feature, probably man made? You could cross the railway to the road. Can't recall if it was gap in the fence, but seem to recall something resembling a wooden bench that you stepped over.

  11. Are we talking about the same gate Beekay,, as a youngster I found it very complicated! abit like dealing with the Coop doors!

Those woods were considered Well dodgy by the early eighties as were the colick crossing toilets!!

Do you remember the 'clearing' with old tree? Had lot's of carvings in it?

I'm pretty sure Foulds was Derby only long before '92. I'll stand corrected if I am wrong tho'

Confusion could be Pianos me thinks, they had some cracking second hand guitars, bass section downstairs, not a keyboard in sight!...

Think a chap that was in Colin Staples Breadline used work their at the time.
