  1. Thinking about Carrington St and Midland station.

The lovely wooden WH Smith was always a go to for me, from five until about 35 years of age, had a

distinctive 'smell'..more than just the floor polish.

When very young, the pub/hotel on the opposite corner of Station St gave me the creeps, thick drapes at the windows, never saw anybody enter, probably just my first vision of Nottingham. Looked really old with original features...recall the wallpaper looking Interesting from a bus. maybe too many episodes of the Adams Family!

When much older, remember a shop, just before the canal on the left, approching from Broad Marsh the whole window display was belt buckles, was it a cobblers?

Just the other side of the canal was a Tote bookies, used to stake my bets there, an 'excuse'to come back!;)

  2. Safe to assume then, with the mention of hut's, Greenwood Rd end was never a mini golf course, an unnatural terrain, wonder if the debris was buried on site?

On the extreme right, entering the woods i think there was a 'modern' generator, also a concrete base, AA gun emplacement? This is mid 70's...

Must go, Curse of Oak island is starting..I like conclusive answers!

    ;)

  3. That's it Huckleberry's,

The railway man's house on the crossing had a spiral staircase in the early eighties, no idea if it was an original feature.

Does anybody recall, the other side of the crossing, running parallel with the Greyhound kennels and the road from the crossing to Netherfied, in between there was a strip of road, old buses, caravans etc?

  4. The first pub I went in Nottingham, was Yates, liked the cross section of drinker's age wise, seemed unusual to me. wouldn't be a regular haunt however.

Recall seeing an old women carrying a Sainsbury's carrier, peak time about 8pm Saturday night... recall the musical

Quartet? Upstairs but only on a Sunday ?

    Weren't the table's copper topped?

Ankle chains or people wearing them?

    Correct Ben...1983..and they weren't old!!!!

  5. Prior to Nottingham opening, recall a bus from Mount St to Derby Dogs on a Wednesday night, about 12 people, same faces every week.

When Nott's opened this went down to about 7.

    .

Cracking Black Bitch called Lois Lane, top grade and off a handicap.

Came over to Nottingham for an open race, hit the front third bend.

    ..job done.

The name Terry Munslow comes to mind..no idea why!

Wasn't the site of Derby Greyhound stadium previously a prison?

  6. Apologies for the multiple postings, decided to change my arm and just 'wing it', Set myself a mini quiz which I can google later...

A couple more trainers..sort off! Best I can do memory wise

    Tina ?? & a chap called Tompkins.

Possibly Pam Timmins also, had runner's, maybe only open races,

also a chap, irish, only had about six dog's, all pushing top grade, think he started unattached, occasional chat at the trails on Wednesday mornings.

Recall watching one of the famous two Overt/Coe clashes (Olympics?) in the small TV room, upstairs

    on the left.

Bookies, varied between 5 and 7, Can only recall Jim Carter, Bill Bright, and Jack? Cowan.

Carter normally 'chalked up' first, actually he was the only one to use a marker pen.

Remember some bookies would scrub their boards, without even taking a bet when one of the comical "stampede's' came!!

    Happy days...

  7. Peter liked a drink if remember correctly, always remember him barking out 'time, time' when I stood in the East Stand.

I stated a topic about Colwick Park greyhound's, recall Stan Bowles & Kenny Burns being there occasionally,  Kenny owned a couple of dog's, the name's escape me.

Thank's for digging this out, I look forward to reading it.

  8. My mistake, Kovac was Ruddington me thinks, who was Eastwood?

Major discrepancy on my part, missed off Charlie Lister, think he had two separate spells.

Only five dogs per race, Trap 3 vacant.

The distances were 312 & 500 metres originally, can't remember exactly but there was the occasional 764.

Later, the addition of 485 and 530, with 500 being phased out.

Makes sence I suppose, but 500 is the distance..

    Enough for today..

  9. Trainers

    Jack Coppin..Skellingthorpe...head lass Maggie.

    Tommy Smith..Long Eaton.. daughter Paula.

    Emil Kovac, I think Eastwood..

    Christine and Shamus Lawlor..unsure.

The Legend..Wilf Flint, think Alfreton but could be Ilkeston?

Also trained at the Nottingham White City. Son Gordon took over the ropes.

Got them of my chest..Few names that people might Google...;)

  10. Does anybody have any memories of the Greyhound stadium? Not the earlier White city, but they would be interesting too.

Batteries going.so in will be brief

Few hounds I remember and would have been my favourites.

    Can't Fancy.. Coppin

    Blanche Boy..Flint

    The three Kirby's..(Same litter) Coppin.

Eilleens Ginger..white & fawn can't recall the trainers Name, bugged me for ages!

  11. So my scatty, reminiscent cross references get the blame! ;)

Bens reference to Boxing, i could have done it again, reminded me of a column in the evening post, back page inside or overleaf bottom, next to it was the Jim Bean Greyhound column, I will create another thread..

  12. Brilliant Bk.. think that's it, always thought that looked like an interesting pub, only saw off a bus,, walked by once after visting a mate at Uni.

    I assume it's near a gasometer?

Hopefully correct with Radford, I went to the Gregory many times to see Dawn Trader.

Also once went to a pub, Marquis of Lorne? Name sticks because I couldn't find it.

I find on here it's abit like taking a quiz, where you you set your own questions!

    Thanks....

  13. Remember when they moved the. Staples jam  from a Wednesday to a Monday,..that's when they started charging a door fee..

Great Band from Germany was early doors..

A few more prior, Old School, Friday right residency, great band.

Both Leicester based but played the Runner regularly, Mick Pini Band, Bamboo Beat Band.

Also..Stan Marshall Law..that's it, for the time being, I'm done!! .

  14. Green Boiled sweets, creates a distant memory of my Grandparents, Granny always had a preference for a Nuthalls Minto,

Green pub.. Right hand side, heading towards the city..just coming off a flyover..

    Ilkeston road.. ??

    Thanks for the encouragement BK..

I will continue to post, but become more focused in future..the downside of this...zero responce! ;)

memory cells jogged about things as diverse as,

Exactly..when I first joined, comfortable musically...great  to take virtual braincell tour!

Must confess gave me a headache

Different approach..beer Goggle's, only know this area though a mate who went to the same  London school as me. he went to Nottingham University.. My Grandparents Nottingham through & through...

Back to topic.. fleeting memories, out of the plainsman, first right down a hill, on the left a small entrance to a park...

A substantial building on the left!!!! council???? (Third time) the fenced off area I initially thought electricity?

This has got me thinking! was the flat area of Colwick Woods once a golf course? Certainly has the undulations, and a 'culvert'

Back to Woodthorpe Park, I do remember those flats, at a much lower level than the golf course, in the. dip think there was a playground. Flats beyond...

Other than the Running Horse, Wasn't there a Green pub in Sherwood? Robin Hood?

There was another In Radford, near the Gasometer, were there anymore?

Always liked that colour scheme, reminds me of the boiled sweet with the chocolate run through....;)

. I remember seeing that field flooded many times.

Don't know the area, but this rings a bell with me, entering from assuming Woodthorpe Drive take a left, on the left, a substantial property, council?

on the right, fenced off area, is this the culvert? Definitely something there.

Further down the path, a small shed on the left, issued with a putter and a five iron, scorecard the size of an underground ticket and a tee you could keep!

Holes 1 to 3 heading towards the football pitch, still had goalposts up? Definitely pitch marked out...and very waterlogged...

Think it was known as pitch and putt..

Edit..thinking you may have payed extra for the tee, 25p, think the round was 60p! this was about '79..

  17. This film has a wonderful charm, a bit before my time but recognise the chap from Crackerjack..

Was Luicille the neglected lass singing the sombre song?

Given the artists and sound, I'm sure the brilliant Joe Meek must have played a part.

However..best thing musically, Kenny Ball and Gene Vincent...

  18. Forgotten about Jaceys and bands, did see an AC-DC tribute band there once, live band night was a Tuesday?

Not a pub I normally frequented, later became a gay pub, was well into my second pint before I sussed it...did have a American size pool table, only one I can recall in Nott's.

IIRC ABK residency was every other Thursday at the runner, can't recall who they dovetailed with.

The Jewsons were a great pub rock band, all classic rock covers, Steve Miller, Joe Walsh, Skynard etc. Just what you want on a Sunday after a heavy weekend. :victory:
