BBC Documentary - The Gift, Can you help?

Recommended Posts

I have received the following Email

Hi there,

I hope you don’t mind me getting in touch again, but I’m hoping you might be able to help me. I’m a researcher at Wall to Wall Television, the TV production company that makes ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ and the hit family reunion series ‘Long Lost Family’. Three years ago, while making the first series of ‘Long Lost Family’, Nostalgia Nottingham helped put us in touch with people desperate to find lost family members and who needed our help. You kindly passed details about the programme to your members and friends, some of whom got in touch with ‘Long Lost Family’. As a result we’ve managed to help find and reunite hundreds of people searching for family members. Without the help of organisations like yours it would be impossible to do this.

I’m hoping you might be able to help me on a new programme for BBC One called ‘The Gift’ (working title). It’s a programme that will help people try and make amends for something that they have done or express their gratitude to someone who has changed their life. For many people it is often not possible to do this by themselves – they may have no idea how to track down the stranger who saved their life – or perhaps they can’t find the courage to make an approach to an old friend alone. The Gift is the programme that can help them achieve this.

With a team of professional mediators, psychologists and experts in tracing people, the programme will help put these people in touch, help them find a gesture or gift that represents their feelings and support them through a meeting. I have attached some background information below that explains the programme in a bit more detail.

I am currently trying to find people who may need our help. I have also attached our A4 advert – I would be extremely grateful if you are able to forward this round to your colleagues, members and friends, or put it up on any notice boards, classifieds section, social media or other places you think people might see it. Please let me know if I can send this over to you in a more accessible format.

We would be extremely grateful for any help that you are able to give us in spreading the word about ‘The Gift’. It is only with help from people such as you that we are able make programmes that change people’s lives.

Thanks so much and I look forward to hearing from you,

Rachel

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

THE GIFT

From the makers of the acclaimed genealogy series Who Do You Think You Are?, and the hit family reunion series Long Lost Family, The Gift (working title) is an inspirational new programme for BBC One that helps people express their gratitude or make amends.

Is there someone who has changed the course of your life forever? Someone you never got the chance to thank properly? Or someone you’ve wronged in the past who you feel a burning need to apologise to? Do you long to talk to them but can’t find the courage to do it alone? What if you’ve lost touch with them altogether?

Living with an unpaid debt of gratitude or a long overdue apology can be an enormous burden. For many thousands of people across Britain, it’s often impossible to move on until you’ve had the chance to express your feelings in person. The Gift is the programme that can help. From tracking down the stranger who saved your life to helping you build bridges with people who you’ve seriously wronged in past, The Giftcan end the years of guilt, worry or longing and finally let you begin to find closure.

With a team of professional mediators, psychologists and experts in tracing people, The Gift will document the stories of people who want to seek forgiveness or express their gratitude and need our help to do so. We’ll track down the people they want to find, support them as they prepare for a face to face meeting, and film them selecting a gift, which might be a token of thanks or to make amends.

The Gift is planned for broadcast by BBC One in a primetime mid-week slot and will be presented by a well known TV personality.

Wall to Wall Television is one of the UK’s leading production companies, with a reputation for producing ground-breaking, intelligent and sensitively made television content. When researching your family history, take into consideration that over many years, that vital information has been lost by, fire, flood, and human error.

Countless times I would be on a research getting to the mid 1700s, and then nothing.I have said before it is time consuming and frustrating,so be ready to hit a dead end.

Also the fact from 1680 onwards, many convicts were shipped to America, and with them went a short written history.

What was left on file in England would be destroyed, adding more frustration to your search.

But don't be put off, it is still worth the time and energy to find out our history. You never know you could be the heir to a fortune.
