After the hell I've been through in the last 10 years, I never go anywhere outdoors without a hat and sunscreen on my nose and ears.

As my specialist plastic surgeon says we can generally cut bits off here and there, but ears and noses are a different thing altogether.

I had a small cancer removed last year from the bridge of my nose and it is very disfiguring, also my sunglasses now fall down all the time ! ;-)

On a lighter note the ozzy's are world leaders in research into this deadly phenomenon and the general consensus is it is the rising levels of uv (A or B I cannot remember which) that is the cause of major skin damage, though some people of darker skin types do appear to have a partial resistance.

The problem is the effects do not show themselves till we are in later life, generally, but there are an awful lot of younger people now presenting with melanoma.

Mudgie, I know of a few Doctors who say, don't put anything on your skin you would not put in your mouth....

There's another thought too, we get our vitamin D from our skin, made with sunlight...with all this slip slap and slop, are a lot of these people who suffer melanomas short of vitamin D???? It's now becoming recognised most folk are vitamin D deficient.... modern lifestyle!! Most folk just don't get out into the sun to build their D up..

I haven't had a cold or flu for years now, I spend a fair amount each day outdoors and I take D supplements.

I used to get at least one cold per year prior to taking supplements, and get at least one dose of flu every few years. Free of both for many years, even when all those I know are sick as parrots...LOL

The problem with the British on holiday is that they aren't used to the sun. They fly off to sunny countries and spend the holiday laid out on the beach. I won't get onto the topic of nights spent in the bars and clubs...lol. They want an instant tan and will risk everything to get it. I realize this doesn't apply to everyone but you see what I mean. Melanoma is what other people get, not them.
