Amongst his many claims to fame was the fact that whilst waiting to fly with a display in his Hawker Hunter at the 1952 Farnborough Air Show, he saw his friend John Derry, and 25 spectators, die when Derry's DH 101 disintegrated over the runway at 700 mph, Terribly distressed - but undaunted - he took off within a few minutes to give a similar display with the Hunter in order to 'distract' the huge crowd from their horror....
