Statue celebrates football legend

Brian Clough began his football career with Middlesbrough

The family of Brian Clough will be unveiling a statue of the football legend in his home town later.

Standing in Middlesbrough's Albert Park, the 7ft bronze figure shows the town's hero as a 24-year-old with his boots slung over his shoulder.

At that time he lived in nearby Valley Road and passed through the park on his way to the club's former ground.

The former player and manager, who became an OBE, died of cancer in 2004, aged 69.

He led Derby County and Nottingham Forest to league championships, winning two European Cups with the Nottingham club in 1979 and 1980, and also played for Sunderland and managed Hartlepool United.

Labour of love

The £100,000 for the statue has come from a combination of public donations and the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Councillor John McPartland, chair of the fund-raising committee, said: "It hasn't been easy but it's been a labour of love for myself and members of the committee.

"Everyone has been enthusiastic and we knew we'd get there. Today is the end of two and a half years of work, but it's been well worth it."

He described the statue as fantastic, and added: "I want everyone to come here to see it for themselves."
