New Nottm to London Route?

Recommended Posts

There have been rumours since about 1981/2 about the Notts/Grantham line being electrified , thus cutting the journey from Nott'm to "The Smoke" down to about 1 hour 35 minutes. These were later denied by BR. It was then put forward that this was a deliberate scam by a Sneinton property magnate to push up the price of property in the area by making it a reasonably priced 'Satellite' commuter town for London workers.

Imagine being at work in 'The square mile' then, about two hours later, sitting on your veranda, sipping on a "Skinny Cappuccino" and a "Pan au Shocolar" (sic) whilst taking in the panoramic views of Meadow lane, Sneinton Hollows and the Eastcroft incinerator with the slightest chance of a glimpse of a shimmering sunset reflecting off of the Trent as she winds her majestic way to the Humber estuary and then onwards to the North Sea. Then looking down at the crap on the streets and wondering "Where did it all go wrong"??

My understanding is that 2014 is a projected date, with First Hull Trains as the favourite for any franchise.

Their 125 mph Bombardier Class 222 diesels would seem ideal for a 90 minute timetable.

Currently operating sets already do Grantham-KX in 62/65 minutes.

No need for electrification either which, IMO, has never been viable for the Nottm-Grantham line, for a variety of reasons.

Certain that Hull Trains will do a careful assessment because - as ever - it always boils down to 'bums on seats'.

Such factors as missing out on the Leicester, and points south, SP traffic are considerations...

Arguably, Grantham & Peterborough already have an excess of ECML providers too.

No, 'fraid not...much less of a performer! Based on their usual start/stop mode,

Namely, Classes 153/156 Sprinters

Nominal highest speed of 75 mph, but have attained 90 mph down Stoke Bank, from Grantham.

Recently rode one down to Peterborough...severe 'boneshaker', even on good quality track.

Apparently Hull Trains have had recent problems with their Class 222's, but should be resolved by the year end.

Cheers
