  1. Wouldn't change any of it fpr the world! I'm talking pre 1960 and my dad never went on strike anyway. He always remembered when they wanted to work and there wasn't the work to be had. Changed his perspective on strikes quite a lot, the 1926 slump. A
  2. Was it Babbibgton pit that had the hot spring in the yard ? if my memory serves me well. My dad was down the pit all his life. He was an Overman at Babbington. The Staley side of the family were mostly down the pit or in the police force, strange combination. A
  3. The other place on Bottle Lane was the Q.E. Remember all the sailors hat bands and the green and cream tiles reminiscent of the underground toilets on the Market square. A
  4. Is the Tinkers Leen the one that runs parallel with the canal at the back of the Revenue building on Castlemeadow ?? the creche they built there overlooks the canal, handy when the kids get rowdy !! The Amenity block also overlooks the canal as well. A
  5. There was a Farrands across the road from where I lived on Aspley Lane. They used to fascinate me with the butter in a big block and cut off what you asked for. The cheese came in the same way, not the pre-packed rubber you buy now, I don't think it has ever seen milk...!!! Don't look now but I am showing my age. I think there was a Marsdens on that line of shops as well, I know there was a Salvation Army citidel there, we had a street party at the Coronation and as usual it rained so we all piled into there. My mum made a crown out of jelly and blancmange with cream and fruit pastels f
  6. Does she remember the dress shop on Derby Road, on the left as you went down, Lipmans I think it was called, I used to make wedding dresses and evening dresses for them in the '60's Trying to squash a quart into a pint pot was no mean feat. the fleshy bits used to pop out all over, totally uncontrollable. Not the done thing today, all M&S and C&A, made to measure garments are not called for. I still make my own though, never bought a dress in the last 45 years. That shows my age!!! A
  7. The only ballroom I know with a rotating dance floor was the Palais on the corner of Parliament street. It could be at midnight they all jhad revolving dance floors?? The Palais had steps to the front as well! A
  8. I was told about you by a very good friend. After being here for a while they are still a very good friend!!! A
  9. Welcome to you all. We should be able to keep the discussions going forever. I also look forward to your memories of Nottingham. A
  10. You did get most of them so therefore it looks like I made them too easy, its a good job that was just to test the water. It wasn't Elton John with strange things on his bottom. It wasn't Kwami Kilpatrick who ran for mayor. Then again I suppose eight out of ten ain't bad.... I will have to consult the oracle for the next one. A
  11. Which leader of Bronski Beat had solo hits? Which star has Marilyn Monroe's signature on her bottom? Which Irish singer was a schoolgirl in the Hush a Bye Baby film? Who made the 70's album Harvest? Which Rochdale singer turned on the 1992 Blackpool Illuminations? Who recorded the Commoner's Crown album featuring Peter Sellers? Who had the first ever million selling CD with The Joshua Tree? Whose 100th single was called The Best of Me? Which pop star ran for Mayor of Detroit in 1989? Reclusive Syd Barrett was a founder member of which supergroup? Don't blow a gasket over this. It is
  12. All I am going to say on the subject....Look on the promanade of a very well known holiday resort....you never know what you might find. If you do go looking make sure you have the correct code of dress, a knotted hanky and trousers rolled up to the knees, don't forget the socks with the sandals!!! See you there. A B)
  13. Does anyone remember Lucky Pierre (Peter in French?) from Rowan and Martins Laugh in. Late 60's show on the box. A
  14. The Doctors you refer to in this discussion are Dr Hickton and Doctor Epstein. Chick Zamick lived in a bungalow on Aspley Lane, opposite to what is now the Bluecoat School. A
  15. Did they have any connection with Skills wet fish shop and the fish and chip shop on Ilkeston Road? A
  16. I used to 'play' in Radford and met my other half there. Do you remember the Colonel Burnaby on Hartley Road, The Alma on Alfreton Road and the Havelock on Ronald Street, to name but three! The Spread Eagle on Alfreton Road, OOps thats four, was run by Eddie Cartright at this time, he now lives in Ilkeston I think. He was famous for the things he used to keep in the cellar like bacon and sausage. Probably the only pub in the area that you could do your weekly shop while you had a drink. He enjoyed playing cribbage while drinking Gin and milk. Denman Street and Hamilton Terrace are two
  17. In the same vein, could they be Cathys' Clowns?? A
  18. Did he try to make a come back on Opportunity Knocks? He had a black bag over his head because he didn't want to be recognised. Needless to say he didn't win and the black bag became a fixture. I think the pony tail gave it away. A
  19. It comes to us all. Take my advice, don't join the OAP club....its not what its cracked up to be!!! Mind you, you can get away with all sorts of things but I won't go into that in such a public place. A
  20. I don't think so, he started selling papers at the corner of Hartley Road and then he moved to Hyson Green. He was a small chap with dark hair and a round face. he used to squint at you through round glasses. Another one with a temper. The hole in the wall guy was a nasty tempered person. He used to have leather sewn to the bottom of his trousers to stop them wearing out, and he used to wear thick leather mittens. A
  21. Good, you have confirmed what I thought. I can now sleep at night. A
  22. The guy in the hole in the wall at the Cathedral used to sell matches, and when he had finished for the day he used to swing himself on to the bus by holding on to the pole and then go thump on the platform. Jimmy used to sell papers on the corner of the Boulevard and Radford Road, he used to visit someone in Aspley and call in at my Grand Mothers for a cup of tea. Just a bit of useless information. A
  23. What was the name of the band leader she became involved with? A
  24. Do you remember Daisy May and Savine?
  25. I am sure her name is Cathy. Wasn't she romantically involved with the conducter of the orchestra she sang with?
