  1. Surrey has so many trees. Each autumn the street sweeper would clean the roads of leaves and then dump them in a huge pile at the allotments. You helped yourself to the mulch.  Much schlepping with a wheelbarrow to put the leaves on the allotment, to sit through the winter. Free, but hard work.  Between that, walking everywhere and living in a 3 storey townhouse, I never had to worry about putting on weight!

  2. When we lived in West Byfleet, we had an allotment. Put our name down on the waiting list and got one quite quickly.  We  soon had it shipshape and planted out. Once everything was established we'd walk down each evening,  3 kids in tow,  hoe and wheelbarrow (no shed for storage) and water everything.  It was a communal tap, no hose pipes allowed, so a lot of filling watering cans and carrying them. We'd pull weeds and pick produce. Of all the things we grew, runner and French beans did the best and we picked them just about every evening,  then I would cut, blanche and freeze. Our beans lasted all year, we had so many. It was a lovely time for the whole family and we missed it when we moved.

My infants school photos from the late 50s-early 60s shows many classes of 40 - 42 - 44 pupils. Nobody batted an eyelid at those numbers.

Actually, I just counted the kids on my infants class photo, and there were 42. There were 2 infants schools at Crane. 2 classes per year in each. By the time we moved to junior girls and senior girls each with 4 streams per year, the classes were around 30 pupils.

When I chopped a finger off some years ago the casualty dept. at Newark, who patched it up, said I would have to go to Kings Mill the next day for a proper assessment. I pleaded with them not to send me there so I was directed to the Pulvertoft Hand Centre at Derby Royal which involved a weekly 60 mile round trip for some months. They even made me a prosthetic finger which sits in a box on my bedside table!

So they gave you the finger?
