  1. Hi Cliff Ton, never understood why the city tore down the beautiful old buildings in the 60s,to be replaced by'modern' replacements. I can remember as a little kid watching lorries full of rubbish, filling in the cave homes around the bowling alley, Not positive to the exact area, but I thought at the time how cool to have one at the bottom of my garden,to play around in.
  2. No babs, I live in Florida,U.S.A. originaly from Beeston, hung out at 'sheds', Jack's cafe Villa s't, middle gates, and at times the 'Torreador' cafe,in the old Trinity square. I rode an old Triumph 'T' bird, back in the day.

  5. Your'e a Nottingham gal.it don't matter who your landlord is,you have legal rights as a renter.Get your lease or rental agreement, read it through, then highlight the parts that apply to,'repairing & making good',by the landlord /owner of the rented property.Monday morning go to their office with your papers, and politely, but firmly stick it up their---------- some things you can't do over the phone, they can give you the brush off to easy. Some of the older folks will remember the early 60s,when renters had no rights, and 'Slumlords' in every city, including Nottingham. So go get 'em,make m
  6. Hey Mick, it's time you became a 'snowbird' and spent your winters here in Florida.Yes it snows in those temperatures, hard fast and deep,as the ex Pat's living here up north will agree,
  7. Hi rilanda, recognise all the names but two,no we never had the chance to kick the crap out of staff members, obviously got wise to it Yes old 'Pop' Roberts enjoyed dishing out the cane, and his staff slapping and punching pupils.Imagine that today, assault, grievious bodily harm, they would all be up before the bench. Not been back to Beeston for 25 years or more,I see the changes from the internet web sites.Alot of the old pubs seem to have survived.
  8. If you are in rented housing, call them up and tell them you are withholding payment of rent, and that said rent will held by a solicitor, untill work is completed to your satisfaction and you want compensation for inconvinience. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
  9. I'm going to smoke a fag,was a hard one to explain to an American.
  10. Hi Stu, you've just done it for me mate,it's lunchtime here so I'm off out to my local Indian, all you can eat buffet. $7-50,a fiver or so. Bryan
  11. When I came to live in America I spoke English, you know "ayup meodeduck" normal Nottingham English.I got so pi$$ed off with Americans saying" I'm sorry would you say that again." With the help of my 'old Gert' I now sound my H's etc,in return I taught her the words and meaning of bullocks and hanker, she uses these two words like a native of Nottingham.I get a real kick when her fellow country say,"I'm sorry would you say that again.
  12. Hi Pixie, went out last week-end to see Gladys Knight in concert, afterwards had a good curry. Lo and behold,"To sir with love," was on the telly when we got home, made it to bed around 3- 30am. Next night out, couple of weeks away, Stax rolling review concert, various artists from the sixties. 'Horlicks! aint' that for the old farts?Three fingers of Jack Daniels,is a good night-cap. Bryan
  13. Hi firbeck, you did the right thing to walk away. There have been many times I would cart my civil war and W.W.1 stuff to a show or meeting, and the only people that were interested, fast talking dealers. They only see a profit and not so much of the history.I have an 1807 tower"Brown Bess"musket,in beautiful condition, with a silk flower sticking out of the barrel. If I had a ten dollar bill for the offers I have had for it,I would be able to buy some top flight players for Forest. Bryan.
  14. Hi Rog, for many years I wrote articles that were published in various journals and magazines, mostly on the American civil war. My second interest is W.W.1.due to the fact as a kid,we had living history all around us,the "old veterans". I mentioned one outfit from Nott's',it is amazing just how many county and city men, served in the "Bantam battalions".When you consider on average 600 men to a battalion, the Sherwood Foresters had 14 regular battalions that were constantly supplied with men from, depot battalions back home. "Where have all the young men gone".
  15. I watched Forest play Leicester in an FA game, result 4-0,this was my first time watching a Forest match, since leaving England.I was a Trent ender for years. you can see how the final score was for me.I watch Premier games every weekend on Fox soccer channel. To make matters worse, after seeing the match advertised,I invited a few of my American buddies round to watch the greatest team in Europe,"Come on you Reds". It was hard to show my face around thier gaff's since the game.
  16. Hi Plantfit, the minimum height in1914 was 5'3'', below that you were into the ''Bantam'' battalions.I seem to recall a militia or territorial outfit from north Nott's ,the ''Welbeck Rifles'',being added to a ''Bantam'' battalion. There were complete divisions of ''Bantams''. Considering, the average height of an Englishman in 1910,was 5' 6'',not surprised we had so many little u'ns.
  17. Most of the casualties during this war ,came from the massive artillery barrages, lasting for days.Thousands of men were atomised, or buried alive,it gave rise to the term, missing in action. I am sure, those of you who have visited the cemeterys in France and Belgium of W.W.1,noticed how many graves there are marked "unknown". There is only an estimated number of deaths, owing to missing company returns, probably blown up or buried ,with the company clerks. It is also accepted that every family in the U.K.was affected by a death or casualty. So it is not uncommon while researching this

  20. As a little kid, we had neighbours in their late 80's.John William ( Jack) and Gertrude Atkins. Jack was born in Oxford in 1864,he ran away from home at 14 and joined the army. The 45th regiment of foot, the Nottingham regiment, amalgamated 3 years later with the Derby regiment to become the Sherwood foresters,1st and second battalions. His record shows ,as a "boy bandsman",he was shipped to Egypt,1899 saw him posted to action in the Boer war.At the end of the war,1902 he was posted to India. 1914,the 1st battalion, came from India, strait to the killing fields of Flanders.Jack was wounded twice,
