  1. I just love the memories of streets full of small shops. I recall a second-hand book and magazine shop just by the old Great Central railway bridge on the left going towards Trent Bridge and a number of pawnbrokers. I bought loads of Scalextric stuff for my lad from one of the second-hand shops on Arkwright Street. Had so much track that it passed through two rooms when fully set-up :o)
  2. I recall what we used to call 'El Greeko' on Alfreton Road near Canning Circus but I didn't frequent Arkwright street sufficiently to recall Pete the Greek. Wait a minute though - wasn't the owner of the Robin Hood Chippy Greek or perhaps Italian? Maybe Pete the Greek was the owner of the Robin Hood?
  3. When in the RAF during the late 60s & early 70s I used to get home occasionally for the weekend. My route home took me up Arkwright Street and past the Robin Hood chip shop. I could never resist stopping to buy fish'n chips for the family because the deals were so good and cooked to perfection. If I recall correctly, this shop was at the southerly end of Arkwright Street and on the left as you look up towards the town centre. Anyone else remember this shop?
  4. You didn't need to be famous to receive a beating from the police in the 60s. I received mine in Wickford police station for sitting on a public bench at 0630hrs on a Saturday morning. I had hitch hiked from Buckinghamshire across London and got a lift in a taxi going off duty. He took me almost to where I was going, getting me there very early and at that time in the morning one didn't go knocking folk up. My intention had been to wait until a reasonable hour before disturbing my girlfriend's family. I was carefully beaten up for "Suspected Vagrancy". They didn't want "My sort" in the
  5. I recently bought a DVD of the 1960 TV series "The Strange World of Gurney Slade" Starring Anthony Newley. It is bizzare and entertaining.
  6. Hear, Hear! to the PC rubbish Pooh Bear :o) Back to Daybrook..... There was an iron foundry on Sherbrooke Road just around the corner from the Grove hotel. I recall standing by the main door watching the men welding and cutting up stuff whilst on my way home from school in the afternoons; this would be in the 1950s. I believe they cut up some small locos and trucks at one stage. It was always a red letter day when they yard man gave us some ball bearings taken from something they had cut up that day. I can't remember the name of that foundry?
  7. I am of the opinion that all three of the major Nottingham breweries (plus Mansfield Ales) were beers of character; especially Shippo's. I have brewed my own beer for many years but never matched the flavour of a good pint of Shipstone's - or should I say 'honest p*ss' (anag). A mate used to work in Saudi and when he arrived at Heathrow for leave he used to take the first train to Nottingham for a pint of Shippo's in the Wheatsheaf on Ilkeston Road near Canning Circus.
  8. Even further off topic is the fish seller who used to come down our street when I lived in Annesley in 1969. He used to shout "Any wet fish, fried fish, KIPPERS!" Raising his voice fro the Kippers bit.
  9. I still have an enamel Golliwog. One collected tokens from the jars and sent off for a really nice enamel badge. Many depicted sports but mine is just a plain Golly. Gollywogs are now back in fashion and are sold in many outlets - they even had them for sale at the John O'Groats shop last time I was there.
  10. Cor blimey - the cockle man! what memories that brings back. I always used to look forward to his visit to the pub around late evening, just when teh appetite was given an edge by the driink :o)
  11. Yes, there's Alf's shop on the right just before the bridge arch; thank you. I also remember the garage in question but cannot for the life of me remember it's name :o( Where was the Bamboo Cafe?
  12. I remember Crookie (y) crisps _ AND_ the smell of boiling wort from the Home Brewery as I passed the crisp factory. They must have shared the same yard.
  13. https://www.hpacde.org.uk/picturethepast/jpgh_nottinghamshire/NCCC003335.jpg This is very interesting. The Home Brewery tower was under construction at the time of taking the photograph. Does anyone have a date for this?
  14. I seem to remember, and I am probably wrong, but the barber was on the corner demolished in the picture, and the barber shop as appears in the picture was a radio shop; anyone concur?
  15. Does anyone remember Eric and Hilda, Landlord/lady of the Druids Tavern on High Street Arnold back in the 1960s? I wonder when they retired and what became of them afterwards?
  16. Have another memory that I would like to discuss but I think it calls for a new subject header....
  17. What a fantastic forum this is! I am seeing photos and hearing stories of places I haven't seen for decades and all thanks to forum members - thanks all. !cheers!
  18. Many, Many thanks for the pictures Stu. I don't suppose you have a nice one of the Station from the footbridge do you? I love the one of the sweet shop. One of my fondest memories of childhood is standing at the counter and choosing my penn'orth of sweets for the week. I had forgotten the houses on Station Road completely. just noticed the Brooke Bond sign too - I now have an identical one on my house (Watten Station) wall. !cheers!
  19. I'm pleased that someone else remembers the pigeon wing! Brilliant!! AS for the hoarding - you are not alone in your nocturnal use. Unfortunately for my brother, he was taken short one night whilst walking home. Being in desperate need of relief he went behind that same hoarding and was apprehended upon his return to the road by a burly policeman who had seen him take the detour around the back. Duly charged with indecent exposure despite having taken precautions to hide from public gaze, he was fined, If I recall correctly, £5 and told to use a toilet next time !rulez!
  20. (Refer to Stu's photo of Daybrook Bridge and Cliff Ton's map) If you imagine you are walking through the bridge on the left hand side you go through the arch and cross Station Road immediately beyond. on the far corner there was a tiny sweet shop where an old lady (1950s) used to sell loose sweets in small triangular bags. I wonder if anyone knows what her name was? The works marked on the map by the station would be the BeRo flour factory. Another question that comes to mind is did they have a hand cranked crane in the station goods yard? And finally for toight: What is the red vehicle u
  21. that is the group of buildings we are discussing. The barber shop is the white frontage and you can just make out the "A H..." A. Hutchings, barber.
  22. It certainly does and it brings back memories too! Here's one: there used to be a pigeon's wing stuck under the bridge decking over the northbound carriageway. Does anyone remember it? It was there for years (c1960s).
  23. Vale motors it was! Well remembered that man :o) Ah, just had a thought.....was Vale motors on the same side as the Vale hotel or was it on the Bedale Road side? Or did they both belong to the same owner?
