  1. I'd forgotten about air bombs - how could I forget those?
  2. I remember when fireworks were fun. Shortly before Bonny night the shops would begin to display the fantastic and colourful boxes of fireworks. Inside they had displays from which you could buy fireworks individually and build up your collection until the big night arrived. Brands such as: Standard Benwell Astra Lion Brocks You could buy fantastic bangers in different sizes such as the penny banger, the cannon or the 3-2-1-zero. We made banger guns out of a piece of conduit pipe, bunged up at one end with a piece of wood. Light banger, insert fizzing end first and follow with a ball
  3. Chip bags. Hornby Dublo three rail trains. Penny bangers.
  4. Living in the far north of Scotland we still get batches of frozen washing on a regular basis in winter.
  5. Admit it - you're blind aren't you <g>
  6. Then it must be at the site of the former carriage sheds on the GCR in Basford?
  7. The fishing tackle shop on Hyson Green [Late 60s/early 70s] used to have a milk vending machine outside the shop for anglers who couldn't get to the shop during opening hours. Instead of milk in he cartons it had Maggots in them. If I remember correctly, it cost two bob for a pint carton.
  8. Children with minnows and sticklebacks in a jam jar with a string handle.
  9. Do that today and the lamp will be gone before you get back into the house! My dad used to have a small paraffin lamp to put under the sump of his Trojan Diesel so that it would not freeze overnight.
  10. Good old Segs - saved many a pair of shoes for another day. Absolutely essential when you are from a poor family.
  11. I have four Zippos - a classic design. Anyone remember the Imco triplex lighter? (2 photos)
  12. Shipstones Ales. Anagram: honest p*ss sale.
  13. Screw top pop bottles - I seem to remember a brand called 'Sunecta' in Notts. and of course 'Apollo' from the Home Brewery.
  14. Petrol cigarette lighters [except Zippo].
  15. I have some wire brushes; they are still available and still relatively cheap too. What about Ronco Brush-O-Matic or whatever they were called. Magically remove pet hairs from clothes and furniture; available from boots, Timothy Whites and all good stores.
  16. Wow! Trolleys. The cyclists in pic No.2 are on the right hand side of the road - is that taken in france?
  17. Poohbear: Hedgerows have always been rare up here. In 1820 a local laird planted many miles of hedges but over the decades farmers have let them go to ruin and be eaten by sheep and cattle. There are few left now but I have two acres of ground that I have planted on a 'park' type theme so there are loads of micro-climates and mini-ecosystems here.
  18. Here's the junior version of the 'magic robot'
  19. They still do it here in the north of Scotland. Each bird has a regular anvil stone upon which to bash its snails.
  20. Tinplate clockwork toys like this one.
  21. So the rubbish tip is at Leen Valley Jn. - Is that your final answer?
  22. I have used the Green Barrel on a number of occasions. I didn't know it was no longer there :o( I don't remember the works but there were a number of sidings (goods road and exchange sidings) behind the Green Barrel on the Leen Valley (GNR back line). Used as storage for condemned rolling stock under the modernisation plan. Can you mean the Basford Carrige sheds on the GCR?
