  1. Firbeck, the name of the record (and dirty book!) shop was Ace Records, and was run by a guy called Ben (ny) and his sis. he was a big mate of Les's, who worked downstairs at the Rediffusion shop that started this topic!. When I worked on Goldsmith street in the mid 70's, I would spend a lot on my time, and money in Selectadisc, whilst secretly wanting to go upstairs at Ace!!!
  2. Cheers Mick. Btw, anyone remember the very camp Peter Martine? Dale used to know him, and I remember being shocked at hearing him use 4 letter words during his set! Mind you, I was very young!
  3. Darn.....I meant to put this in the 70's bit! Anyway, a few more names, Dave Ross (Penna) The 2 dj's at Oscars......?............. Dave..?.............? Nick? Stu, (worked in NJD on Mansfield Rd with Dave Ross. Barry Gee? Jonathon Paul King (Gadsby)
  4. I worked many a club during my days with NJD, and even more afterwards, and was just trying to remember some names that you may remember too. As NJD would sometimes swop guys around, I wont bother trying to link them to the club they mainly worked at, These included, The Babel, Oscar Wildes, Toffs, Annabels, Isabellas, and others too....feel free to add names to them! John Dolby. Paul St John (Beswick) Kevin Hopcroft Boggy (Martin Baugh) Dave Maurice (Morris?) Ill have to finish the list later...have to go out!!!
  5. Am I right...Mickey Norton, better known to me as Mick, was he a regular at the Dungeon? And was Alan a slim, tall guy ? (talking early to mid 70's here, we all add a pound or two in later years) Im just wondering if the guy who asked me to become one of his door staff (because of my karate skills, not body size!) was Alan, it would have been around 1974/5, and I was managing what was the old Dixons shop on King St, and he used to come in to buy music cassettes for his car, that we were selling off after the shop finished selling cameras etc. If anyone has a pic, that would be good.
  6. Wasnt Toppers opposite (ish) the old Co op? I recall it being called a "Piano Bar"....and yes....I did a gig or two there! (if we're talking about the same place)
  7. Toffs was the nightclub in The Bridgford Hotel by the Trent, I did a few gigs there in my early days with NJD.
  8. Id totally forgotten about that place! I remember dj'ing there......cant remember when tho'!!! (or even its location!!)
  9. What........there was a beer called Jo & Twiggy?????? Ill assume youve heard the news then about Jo, doing stuff on what is still called Virgin, but will soon be "Absolute Radio"? Twiggy will remain tho'
  10. In my case, I knew/know the guy who supplied vehicles for many tv shows, in fact its drag racer (former Eurppean champ) Barry Sheavills, ( him and his crew were often extras on things like Auf Wiedersein ) who used to have Anglo American Auto on Ilkeston Rd, id known Barry cos of having a few Yank cars prior to the car they needed, which was a BMW 3 series. Incidentally, they also built some of the strange machines seen on kids ITV at the time, cant remember what they were called, but one was like a lobster, based I recall on a Moggy Minor. Also, Tim Healey, from "Pet" had a 6 series BM, whi
  11. I really dont believe how small a world it is!!! I used to do a slot there on a Sunday night, straight after I finished my Sunday night show on Trent at 10.00, driving like a loony to start at 10.30. Gordon Desmond was the resident dj, at least on the night I was there, and apart from being on a panel of judges with Larry LLoyd there one night, id had the singer P P Arnold on my show, and mentioned to her that I had to dash straight off at 10 to my gig, and she offered to drive down and do a llive p a with her band at the time Pressure Point (must have been mid 80's) What a great lady she w
  12. My car was once hired for one episode.......I wasnt too pleased when I saw it being thrashed on telly!!!!!
  13. Oi!!!! watch it Mr Durose!! twas I that did the voice overs for Machns! !clapping!
  14. Dont think ive mentioned this before, but when the likes of YMCA was in the chart, I was actually DJ'ing at the Noor Jahan on Saturday nights! This was when they had the next door too, which is now a kebab shop, and had a small dance floor, my payment of choice was food and drink enough for my giirl friend, and her sis and bro in law! This was when "Peter" who owns the Saagar in Sherwood, was the manager, prior to opening the Chand, also on Mansfield rd.
  15. And they are sited at the same premises that the Maharani was at when it opened in the 70's, run by the nephews of the owner of the Noor Jahan. I enjoyed many meals there
  16. Not 100% sure, but I recall reading on one of their menus that they were the first Indian restaurant in Nottingham, perhaps mentioning 1959?
  17. I had the James Bond ones, and remember being a bit too infatuated about an actress in a basque I think it was, with her stocking tops showing!!!!!!!!
  18. Thats not what you said when you mentioned being at a club and the women not wanting to dance with you!
  19. I thought that The Koh I Nor on Alfreton Rd was Nottinghams first Indian restaurant? Id forgotten all about The Purple Elephant! I had many meals there, always thought the food was good......... Also the Asian Deluxe was a popular haunt after club hours, Surook Miah I recall, oh the joy of a hot ruby burning your guts at 4 am!!! In fact, one night, after id finished at The Babel, we went there, and it had been my turn to drive, had the usual ass burner, and on taking my mate back home to Gedling, I felt this very uncomfortable feeling down deep inside, and desperately needed the loo! Pr
  20. This was my very first car, it was a 63 or 64, re sprayed metallic blue, which soon became non metallic due to the cheap job the guy I bought it from did on it! My most vivid memory was when I eas driving on Radford rd, towards Gregory blvd, and the bell housing came apart and hit the road bringing the car to a rapid halt. They dont build em like that anymore...........................thank God! Just remembered its reg, XTL 504, wish id kept it, probably been a few bobs worth now!
  21. Stu is mentioned in other parts of the forum, and is a keen Motown and Soul enthusiast, in fact, if you either tune in, or log onto BBC Radio Stokes Mary Fox show, he sometimes has input to it one way or another, plus his mate Jan often goes to the Soul night at The Regency suites (Ilkeston Coop) which, incidentally, the next one is tomorrow the 29th. What about Dino (Deano?) who used to be at Michael Isaacs/Harpers, the old Babel nightclub, its a while since I bumped into him, and his son, who also worked doors.
