My uncle was a coal merchant. He and his son together. They required assistance with back scrubbing from their wives when they got home. They’d go to Gedling coal yard on Mapperley top early morning, weigh the coal into hessian sacks and carry the sacks on their backs up entries to deliver to the houses. He made a good living out of it but it was hard graft.

I remember when at Mellish, if I caught the trolley into town on Highbury Rd. they would be colliers returning home in their dirty working clothes. I thought that pit head baths would have been available in late 50’s early 60’s.

Very much in the tone of its day but I liked that a lot. Never could stomach Dennis McCarthy!

If your lucky enough to have a full head of hair in your 70’s then make the most of it. There’s still a few oldies with crowning glories down our lane. I do see the Grecian 2000 tanker making secret deliveries in the dead of night though!

Some of the money saved could go towards the purchase of a hat.

You're a brave man. You should open a salon.

I did actually go to that belly dancing restaurant. Certainly not my scene!

I managed to finish the Nottingham film. There were some interesting bits and memories revived and lots of the things that are no longer there. I thought it was ‘bitty’ and a very amateur movie. It could have been more professionally put together. Dennis McCarthey was revered as a saint by the old dears who listened to ‘Afternoon Special’ and when he passed on he had what amounted to a ‘state funeral’ with the centre of town being brought to a halt.

It was interesting but became a bit tedious to digest in one viewing. I'll finish it tomorrow.

It flys through the trees between us and the Brazier's field. Same every year and about the same time. Seems to fly around the parish boundary between ours and yours. Probably about a mile from you.

I knew a Walter Weddle. Quite alliterative!

I know a Perdita. It means 'lost' apparently.

I knew of someone named Russell Prout.

I've flown in a few helicopters but only as a passenger. I've also done a couple of gliding courses, plus I've done some glider acrobatics (scary). I flew into Langar once and watched the parachutists doing practice on bales of hay. An old friend used to fly the twin engined dropping aircraft. Two friends who did a parachute jump both twisted an ankle and one ended up on a factory roof! Perhaps I should grow old gracefully.
-
A helicopter’s best for that. I might have a trial flight when things improve. I’ve never done a parachute jump nor a balloon trip either so I still have an aviation bucket list to complete before I’m taken up in the sky forever!

God, it's still there and it's got a website should you be interested!

All dress is fancy dress. When I used to fly we sometimes flew over a nudist colony at Newstead Abbey. Couldn't see much from 500' though!

As long as it's behind closed doors!

Just finished reading 'My prison diary' by Geoffrey Archer. My god that was tedious!

I absolutely love Elgar. Whenever I hear his music I'm reminded of driving through the Malvern hills (Elgar country) in my Morgan many years ago to the sound of his music. I'd love another Morgan when all this nonsense is over but that's just a dream as I doubt I could still get in one! We played Nimrod at my mother's funeral. That was a straight in straight out non religious send off but poignant!

That's a good chip shop. Very envious. I just fancy proper fish and chips or even a Big Mac. Our nearest chippy in Southwell is only average and it's a 10 mile round trip. We must be running low on supplies. It's burger, beans and chips tonight!

Being at one time an accountant and subsequently a company director I always had to maintain an air of respectability so I never was able to be trendy. I think my hair now is longer that it ever was. I suppose I should be grateful I've still got some. It turned grey when I was 40 (stress!) I did try dyeing it brown a few years ago but I felt a bit of a prat and I did get some strange looks. I may as well grow old gracefully now.

Another one was 'the barber's pole will fall on you!'

Anti establishment maybe but the Beatles wore suits and so did the Animals. The Stones weren't all that scruffy either. I think scruffiness came with the punk era. My present haircut is a bit like a Beatle/Boris Johnson now but I've not been asked for an autograph! Wives will soon be getting their scissors out.

He was Bob Burton and lived at nearby 4, Greys Rd. His father, Elijah Burton, was also a coal merchant and a builder but on a much larger scale. He lived on Maitland Rd. where he had built many of the houses pre war. His truck garage was at the top of the road near Woodthorpe Drive. We lived in one of his houses (rented) just off Buckingham Rd. He also built a few bungalows at Chapel Point in Lincs. He fenced off his part of the beach but the council made him take it down!
