  1. The toy and pram shops were in the block that went down to Burlington Rd., just below the Garden City pub, now called the Sherwood Manor. I don’t think I ever went to the Metropole but some of my friends went to ABC Minors there on a Saturday morning. My nearest cinema was the Roxy, just over Mansfield Rd. from the Vale Hotel. I do remember going to the one in Carrington, (was it the Curzon?) to see Rock Around the Clock with Bill Haley and the Comets. There used to be a filling station next to the Metropole and that became a supermarket. QuickSave was it? We were living on Park Rd. off Thackeray’s Lane before we moved out into the sticks. We had the Girls’ High School playing field at the bottom of our garden so I could watch them at play!

  2. I’ve just checked and discovered healthcare waste is not accepted at disposal sites but should be taken to a surgery. We’re going round in circles here. I still have a couple of boxes of outdated marine distress flares to dispose of. You can imagine the consternation it would cause if I took them to a police or fire station. I think I’ll leave them in a bucket of water fro a few weeks and then chuck them on my bonfire.

  3. I could imagine the consternation if I turned up to the waste disposal site with a box of used syringes. I was surprised that my surgery wouldn’t accept them as they must have to dispose of their own on a regular basis. Going online I was directed to a surgery for their disposal.

  4. I had to self inject for a short time after my hip replacement. I had to stick a needle in my stomach. No problem at all. The biggest problem was the disposal of the sharps. The surgery couldn't accept them and referred me to the local authority. I wasn't prepared to be given the runaround so I set fire to them and put the debris in the bin.

  5. I have cousins in Perth who went out in the late 50’s with my aunt and uncle. My aunt and cousins have visited here and we have an open invitation to go over there but, although I have a pilot’s licence, I don’t enjoy flying unless I’m in the driving seat and I certainly couldn’t stick a flight of that length. Anyway my passport has expired and I don’t intend to renew, although I may need one for my Scottish trips soon!

  6. I’ve been outside washing two cars. Gosh it’s cold out there but it had to be done! Our country roads are very muddy and the cars were filthy. I’m glowing now and eating a sardine bun. Perhaps the interiors this afternoon if I can tear myself away from the warm house.

  7. I don’t decry the guy’s achievements on the track. Well done to him for that but he makes millions and lives as a tax exile whilst us poor buggers living in the UK have to pay income tax. I do know a chap up the road who’s just got an OBE for ‘political services’ (contributions and service to the Tory party) but he does pay UK tax.

  8. Yes, I do indeed Ben. It always evokes memories when I pass that way although I don’t do that very often now. We used to run up Kersall Drive, along St. Albans, over the common down past the golf course to the railway bank, under the bridge and back up St. Albans. The longer run took us over Hucknall Rd. and out into farmland before returning through the bridge. Not being a team player I enjoyed cross country and was school champion. ‘The loneliness of the long distance runner’!

  9. I left a few years before you started Martin but I was pleased to see the tradition of explosives and pyrotechnics continued. Some of my friends who engaged in that activity became eminent scientists although it didn’t assist my accountancy career. We too obtained the school master key. A teacher lent his keys to someone who rushed down the road to get a copy before returning it. The copies were copied so we all had one. A lot of the staff were sadists. They held officer rank in the war and treated us like the erks they were previously in charge of. Hutchinson and Frank Clark we’re prime examples, although Charlie Evans, a Lancaster pilot, was a good guy. I attended the closing ceremony prior to the fine building being demolished.
