  1. I knew the boat clubs long before they became music venues. When I was at Mellish, in my first year, around   1955, I joined the rowing club as cox to first four. We were based at Brit and other schools like High Pavement, Becket and High School were situated at the other clubs. We kept two boats there and trained all year round for the summer regatta season  when we competed all over the country. I still have a small trophy, ‘The Butcher Cup 1956’, the only cup I’ve ever won! We trained on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings, usually rowing between the power station and Lady Bay Bridge. The only downside was when we won a race the cox was ceremonially chucked in the river. I remember having to swim two lengths of Northern Baths, Basford, fully clothed, to demonstrate my competence to survive a capsize.

  2. We’ve got our parish council flood warden running around looking at the water in the dykes. The problem is that when the Trent is very high the dykes can’t drain away. The dyke on our lane is fairly high but I only remember it coming over onto the road about twice since 1962. If things get bad I’ve got a couple of life jackets and an inflatable dinghy. If it gets really bad my boat will float of its trailer but that would represent a flood of Noah’s Ark proportions and West Bridgford will be submerged! There is some flooding over the road at Thurgarton and down the A612 towards Southwell near Halloughton Rd. Main St. in Lambley is also impassable. There’s no end in site to the rain yet. As yet there are no published flood warnings for the Trent Valley villages.

  3. Looking at your map I think there were some Rigley’s works near Leen Valley junction back in the 50’s. The line closed during my time at Mellish and initially they provided a ‘bus from the yard at the back of Daybrook station adjacent to the Be Ro factory. Subsequently we had to get on a ‘bus at the top end of Valley Rd. and then catch a 43/44 along Vernon Rd. to Highbury Vale.

  4. That's exactly where I've been, Darnal Close off Rigley Rd. I also remember when that was all fields and farms. It was part of our cross country course when I was at Mellish. Quite nice area. Not proper Bulwell though! I always think of Bulwell as the Bogs and Market Place and St. Mary's church. Bulwell actually covers a very large area.

  5. The extra NI contributions will be paid by the so called rich into the communal pot for the purpose intended. Banking cash at present rates is worthless. Spend, spend, spend. Stimulate growth, create jobs.

Boris is going to have to fund his giveaway to the rich somehow..  ;)

It's not necessarily a giveaway is it? He did talk about raising NI contributions as well. Whilst a few of these people may be classed as quite rich, many will be senior teachers, police officers, health workers etc. And what will they do with the extra cash? Why they'll spend it of course, thereby stimulating the economy and adding to the VAT coffers.

  7. The paltry £10 Christmas bonus would be £134 now if inflation proofed. I suppose that will be the next to go. We oldies shouldn't be disregarded. We’re not sponging off the state, we’ve paid a substantial contribution in taxes over our lives.

It's easier to act deaf or stupid.

My old office manager used this ploy. He always said, when dealing with the Inland Revenue, DSS and similar authorities, the best ploy was to ‘act daft’. Doing that meant that they did all the work for you. I employ this philosophy all the time now that I’m in my dotage and get away with it. Poor old soul they think. I love it.
