I don't celebrate Halloween but I appreciate that young children take a lot of care carving out pumpkins.  For this reason, I feel sad that some youths went round the village last night smashing any at were still outside houses, or kicking them down the road.   Some of the little children were crying when they saw what had happened to their pumpkins.

How cruel they have obviously had a traumatic life. The youth ( bad ones) seem to take delight in messing or breaking things up. Feel sorry for those poor kids . The only pumpkins I will put out will be made of wool and they can stay out all winter !

  2. I was going to ask if All Saints was celebrated in UK. Here it’s tremendous, the village is “ invaded” with families of the defunct. Flowers are everywhere including cemeteries. Thank goodness they are now offering alternatives besides Chrysanthemums. “ Flowers of the dead” today I’ve seen all sorts of colours and it will certainly brighten the cemetery up.Especially those awful walls of grave stones.

  3. Lizzie it’s the same here. Alex has been sitting outside most days. The dogs love it and they sit watching for cats and ignore them they’re too comfy. James was saying this morning that they had a group who hadn’t booked last night but wanted to eat and although the restaurant was full to capacity the only place they could sit was outside . They didn’t mind so sat outside and had 18 dishes with truffles. Truffles , truffles and more truffles are quickly getting scarce. The problem is you spend a couple of thousand to buy them to serve and sometimes you’re left with them because either people don’t want or don’t know what they are or even don’t want to pay the price. Then you buy a couple of hundreds worth and run out. So really you never win. James has rung all his suppliers and there isn’t one truffle to be seen. The other night we ate at James’s and were talking to a German couple . They are touring Italy and made a detour to pass Alba ( famous for white truffles) they did have truffle shavings on their food and when James had shaved a few they told him they would tell him when to stop!

This weather is unbelievable but nice, makes you worry about how the winter will be.

  4. Benjamin thought about you this morning, you always say “ plenty of heyups” when you go for your coffee. Well this morning when we went for coffee and took 3 dogs , there were more people about than usual and everyone who went into or came out of the bar was someone we knew, very unusual at that time of morning but it was nice. There are lots of strangers who once lived around here that have come “ home” for “ Tutti Santi” ( All Saints) to pay respects to lost loved ones. It’s also a bank holiday including tomorrow. It has had a knock on effect the bar had run out of brioche and had to serve pastries instead. The local supermarket had run out of bread and was so packed that people couldn’t get what they wanted. So I suppose most have relatives staying for all saints services tomorrow. I hate shopping every day but why do they leave shopping until the last and can’t find what they want.

I too went to the barber’s today. In Blidworth. Don’t ask why Blidworth? Its a long story! There was a chap in the chair chatting with the barber and I honestly couldn’t understand a single word he was saying. He was obviously a local but it was just like being in a foreign country!

I know how you feel Phil. Here most of the locals speak in dialect which i dont speak, i can just about get the gist but thats all. Those who know me speak either in Italian or English. My next doors neighbours mother always spoke to me in dialect and she never rembered when i told her i didnt speak Piemontese.

  6. Unfortunately Jill the word is going round that he sold himself for a case of vodka. He is getting more pathetic the older he gets. He looks like a plastic “ Ken” He’s had so many lifts that now he can’t smile.

I think now he’s having a paddy because things didn’t go the way he wanted.

  7. Unfortunately Jill it’s still rearing it’s ugly head. My sil is continuing her radiotherapy again after having covid that stopped her treatment for almost 2 weeks and she only has a few more to go. She was elated this morning because she was going to continue . We are waiting for our 4th dose but we were told to wait it was too early. ( probably for over 80s which won’t be long.

  8. Good and bad news a few days ago. Good news is the weather will be good until Christmas with fairly high temperatures which is nice but not normal.

The bad news is that we have to put up with mosquitoes until then. I have fly screens but they still get through and I can guarantee I’m bitten at least a couple of times a day.I can’t have the front door open at all so it’s a nuisance having to keep the dogs inside then outside instead of them going out to sunbathe!

Every now and again we have a chilly day but doesn’t really need CH but just a quick blast firing up the wood burning fire to take the dampness away. ( the atmosphere )

  9. My sil recently had an op in her mouth for cancer. She’s ok and is recovering well , she continually wears a mask even with us and close family and friends, which is very wise. She’s having chemo every day for 30 days, she only has about 7-8 days left. This morning she didn’t feel well and called her Dr. Tested for covid and she’s positive. The local Croce Verde( voluntary service takes her to the hospital, waits and brings her back home. She’s not been near anybody and as I said before she always wears her mask. She thinks she may have picked it up at the hospital. You never can tell. We are waiting for our 4th dose

Must admit he best Larger I have every had was when we went over to Germany long time ago now but i think it was offmaster (not sure how its spelt in German) but its the one with the bear on. When in the brewery I brought 2 drinking glasses to bring home. All the way from Germany driving though the night so we could get the night ferry arriving back  to Nottm safe and sound with my beautifull glasses, stepped out of the car, glasses were on my knee, on there not !!! there they were, in piece's on the floor.

A bit how it happened to me years ago. We packed up in boxes and were very careful to protect all our crystal and glassware wedding presents . We sent them to Italy and hoped everything arrived safely. It did; not one glass or piece was broken or even cracked. After a year here we decided to return to Nottingham so everything packed up again. Even then nothing broken . But putting them all into a display unit I broke so many and was so upset. Returning once again to Italy nothing else was broken and even returning to Nottingham and again in Italy. Even now I don’t have any more broken glasses. Was it a warning

  11. Sorry to hear all that fuss just for a piece of plastic. Its unbelievable. I renewed my licence a while ago and its not that complicated here, in fact its so simple its ridulous. We go to , actually its a driving school but all applications are dealt with there. The owner of the school sees to all the applications and we go with appointment along with everyone else and one by one we are called to see the inspector who asks various questions. When we've finished we pay and sign , are given a permission to continue driving and we're told licence will be sent to us . All done and dusted. The only thing that bothers me is that the inspector speaks in such a low voice that i sometimes dont catch what he saying. I'm not deaf but a quiet speech in Italian is hard to understand. Then he asks where I'm from and a conversation starts up. Not ideal for the situation because there's other people waiting.

Mary hope you don't have to wait much longer.

  12. Tomorrow after 3 days marinating , the fruit will be added to the other ingredients and mixed ( anyone want to stir and make a wish? ) then baked. My grandchildren always liked to stir and wish but its a few years since i made Christmas cakes so i suppose now they are getting too adult to join in things like that but they did enjoy it especially when they got to lick the bowl out.

Christmas Dinner time at the pub MEN ONLY.

Why ? Aren't the women supposed to drink on Christmas day. My parents weren't pub goers so neither were we. I think it was a selfish idea so i suppose it was the idea of women slaving over a hot stove and not being able to enjoy themselves.

I remember Christmas day when everyone helped and then spent the rest of the day eating chocolates and watching TV the only alcohol we had in the house was sherry for the trifle and bottles of home made wine and then it was only a glass. Dad was brought up absolutely teetotal his parents were very strict. My grandad would turn in his grave if he knew I'd married into a catering family.
