  1. Coming back from scotland the other week I hadsome coppers in my bag. They were bulky and heavy, I had to get rid of them. I thought I would get another pack of paracetomol ( they are expensive here) 16p I was 1 p short when I opened my purse and counted out the coppers. The cashier saw I had £20 & 10 s and said she could change that. I wanted to get rid of them not accumulate them. I ended up putting them , plus into cancer research. A more intelligent choice.

  2. Had to laugh here when small change was virtually impossible to find they would give you sweets or shoe laces instead of change. One day my husband was so fed up of receiving shoe laces ( in wrong colour) from the local newsagent that he put all the shoelaces together to pay for his paper. The shop keeper just glared at him and asked him what he was playing at. Hubby replied if they are good enough for you to give them as change they are good enough to buy a newspaper. He never did it again.

  3. Not much different here in Italy. About 15 yrs ago we had a radiator that wasnt functioning. Cold at the bottom hot and top. Called the plumber he eventually came . Its silted up I told him. No no no he said itneeds bleeding. No its silted up. NO No No. Ok fix it. After huffing and Puffing he eventually managed to get it open and whoosh ....the amount of silt that came out was unbelievable. All up the curtain the wall and the floor. Good job we had tiles on the floor can you imagine a carpet. I was furious but all he said was well I wouldnt have believed it. Needless to say we never called HIM again.

  4. Benjamin. I cant remember it as a shop selling only wines & spirits but I must have been only 7 or 8 . Thats the one tho I couldnt remember Fulforth st. but I can remember a horse dying outside our " big yard". It was a horse and cart and the poor horse was lying on the cobbles covered in blood. The big yard was the rear of our houses and the local Doctor Used to park his car there and us kids used to beg a ride on the cars running boards. We played marbles under the fire escape and I remember a boy trying to be clever throwing darts at a target ( another boy) and the dart went into his leg.

  5. Farrands. When we first came to Nottingham we lived on Huntingdon St. mum used to shop at Farrands which was just around the corner from us. on the corner of Mansfield Rd and a short st which went from Huntingdon to Mansfield . Going towards the centre Woodborough rd was the next corner down.

Going down what I thought at the time was Hockly on the right hand side used to be a dolls hospital this must have been about in early 50's as we went to live in Sherwood when I was 10 does anyone remember?

  6. My husband had a photo taken with him when he worked at the " chestnuts" in ROT whilst Saville was staying there. Was the time when Saville shaved off half his beard. After all this came out my husband absolutely destroyed the pic and said he was sorry hed even spoken to him. These people are warped.

  7. I remember that winter having to walk home from Hyson Green Up to Cinderhill in snow as well as thick fog. A funny (not at the time ) thing happened to us here during a really bad snow fall. We lived in a group of houses in a valley. The road in and out was on a hill so when it snowed it was easy just to go downhill onto the "main road". Now here in Italy the snow ploughs are out in force so the roads get cleared fairly quickly. At that time there were 2 ploughs clearing the road. When my husband got into the car to go to work the plough had been and it had blocked the exit. Fool he was as the opposite side of the road was just fields. So hubby had to come back and fetch a spade to dig himself a space to get out. That done and arriving late to open the bar, spend the morning working and coming home at lunchtime, came to come down the hill and what does he find....the plough had blocked the entrance. Stupid again the opposite side was another field. Very hungry and annoyed he tried to plough his way through and got stuck on the top of this mountain of snow. It looked like something out of "The Italian job" as the car was rocking from front to back. It took ages to shift the snow. He complained to the local council and told them the drivers were a load of idiots. It didnt do much as they continued to block us in. Fortunately we didn't have another heavy snowfall. It lasted until May that year. We also had snow in August. All the market stalls had christmas decorations and Happy Christmas signs. Not looking forward to the snow this year.

  8. .Carni, I think your aunt might have used porridge oats to clean the mussels. I was born near the sea and I spent the school holidays with my grandparents.Grandad used to take us cockling on the sands at Walney Island. We thought it was wonderful treading the sands and watching the cockles rise to the surface. Grandma always. put them into water and sprinkled porridge overthem and leave them a few days to get ridof the sand and dirt. G/dad used to search the rock pools and bring home dozens of crabs in a sack then empty them all over the kitchen floor. I've never lost my pleasure in eating sea food and enjoy everything. Mussels I love in every way but my favourite is with garlic, tomato and white wine withplenty of bread to mop up.

I think the blueys were blue buttons. I like them. Here we have porcini mushrooms they have a very strong taste and they make a very nice risotto. At the moment its the season for them and everyone goes mad for them. I think they are called cepes. ( french or english I dont know)

  9. Now that the sun has made an appearance - for sun burn then flamazine is the best. For just redness and soreness from the sun - yoghurt.

I prefer to eat yogourt. I always use Aloe Vera gel . Its fantastic for bites and stings along with lavender essential oil. The irritation disappears almost at once.
