40 c here today, that's a tad hot, cooling down to 30 tomorrow

You’re in summer Oz we’re in winter and near the alps so in theory it should be cold , cold as in at least 10-15 c below.

  2. I’m having problems with my back again . Saw Dr and he suggested another RM . I said something about having to wait a long time to get an appointment .He told me there was another cllic open in Asti that was very good and quick. He had taken his wife there the week before. Phoned, appointment made and went this morning arrived there about 9.30 with appointment at 10. At reception they asked for my health card and couldn’t find it but had my ID and they researched it and found it , gave me a form to fill in and before I even sat down to wait they called me by name and I was outside in the car by 9.58. All done and waiting for results on Thursday online. It was so convenient car park right in front of reception and although we still have to pay it cost only €59 instead of €120 at another clinic. In the past the hospital has always sent me for follow up so this is better than waiting around for taxis or walking miles from car park to where I need to be.

My fathers car when I was very young was a Morris 8. I still remember it with great affection and recall trips with my late sister in that car. I’ve toyed with the idea of getting one but I haven’t the health to restore one so it would have to be one that just needed routine maintenance. He traded that for a Morris Minor and indeed my first car was a moggy but they don’t appeal nearly as much as the Morris 8.

My very first when I passed my test was a morris 8. It cost me £20 inc insurance. I had to keep the choke lever out for a while with a wooden block. There was only a cloth covering the ceiling of the car but it was mine and it got me to work. The next car was a  Vauxall Viva which was serviced regularly by a son of one of my hairdressing customers. Only cost me £3.

  4. Mrs B I think I would have taken it back to them. The butcher in ROT was Onions. He are once in our restaurant and had Italian sausage. He loved it so My husband asked him if he ( my husband) would make some for him if he gave him all the ingredients needed. He made them but they were awful. My husband asked him what else had he put in the ingredients that he gave him He’d put Rusk in which Italian sausage doesn’t have. He was worried that it looked different and thought it wouldn’t bind. He did make it again and that time it was good but my husband wouldn’t give him the recipe. He supplied everything in the proportions needed and got the meat from Onions.

  5. Yes Phil I remember the flying club dinner and was sorry to hear about the rabbit. On these occasions we tried to keep the authenticity of Italian cooking and rabbit is so popular and is delicious. But you could never please all the people all the time. I forgot to add that we did a couple of years at the golf club . James was at the age of conscription in Italy although he lived in UK . We had already decided to come back to Italy but the problem was if we went straightaway James would have to do his national service. So as we’ d already sold L’Angolo we passed the couple of years at the golf club meaning James was no longer due to join the army . We spent new year 2000 there before we flew here.

Ps Ponte Vecchio was/is next door to Antonio’s and Puccini was on Shelford road.

Surely La Buca was originally on Thurland St. That's where we first discovered you. I travelled to Italy quite often on business and it was good to find 'proper' Italian food back home. We followed you around until you departed.

Yes Phil it was on Thurland street right opposite NatWest Bank .Then Alex opened Ponte Vecchio on Trent Bridge along with one of his waiters and put a manager in. Then we sold La Buca and took over a licensed shop with the idea of converting it which became “ Puccini’s” 3 years later we sold and came to Italy and stayed 7 years returned to open L’ Angolo in Radcliffe. Returning to Italy we bought a restaurant that catered for weddings but we’d been convinced to buy this place by the rep who visited them , but although we did a lot of receptions daily work wasn’t there. We also bought the house that belonged to the restaurant and sorting out the ground floor we found a load of documents that proved they were in a lot of debt. It was a shock and we didn’t know what to do. Eventually we asked the previous owners if we gave them the restaurant back and just paid them for the house would they accept. They did and we were free of any consequences. It was very stressful and frightening but at least we had our consciences clear. We cleared up and came to live here in the village and borrowed some money to buy the only busy bar freehold.  Both Deborah and James worked there. Time passed and Deborah opened her restaurant that has now been going for 12 years and 6 years ago James opened his restaurant after being bar manager at a luxury hotel and spa. So apart from odd things in between I’ve brought you up to date.

Good morning nonnaB. No it was the Chestnut where we went. I was living at Cropwell Butler at the time. Small world eh.

My husband was the manager of The Chestnuts. He was there when the fire destroyed all the reception area. A sad affair because he had brought the place back into busy business It went down a bit but soon recovered due to his personality and his professional staff. At one time it was the place to be because all Christmas parties were held there.

Nonna what was the restaurant you had in Radcliffe called ? Think it could have been where I had my wedding reception to my first husband in 1977? Maybe not but worth asking the question.

Mrs B it the first one was called La Buca and the 2nd was L ‘ Angolo. The 2nd was Roses old garage on corner off New Street , the 1st one was on Shelford Road. Hope that helps.

Thinking about it La Buca we opened  in 1976 if I remember well. I don’t think we had any receptions because the restaurant wasn’t very big. We did do a few small receptions though later on but mostly for either friends or customers. We weren’t really noted for weddings but we had a lot of theatre people and people being nosy .. the word got round. Must add that wasn’t the only reason people came the food was excellent and we had good write ups. ( if In doubt ask Phil Mayfield)

  9. Not understanding any language can be funny or even devastating . We had a customer who was always telling us about her daughter and how much they loved Italy. I asked what her daughters name was.  She explained that she wanted an Italian name that was different from the usual names. I didn’t know how to react when she told me but I couldn’t tell her because the name she had chosen translated to frying pan. The sound of it is quite nice but pity she didn’t find out the English name first.

  10. Small world indeed. When we had the restaurant in Radcliffe we got very friendly with most of our customers who eventually became friends. A an affectionate greeting along with a chat with one particular person had me a bit concerned during the evening because he kept asking various things. At the end of the evening when the restaurant was winding down he came to me , looked me in the eye and said “ You’re from Barrow in Furness aren’t you “  It shocked me because I didn’t think I’d still got my accent ,I was only 5 when we went to Nottingham. Then he asked about where we lived etc and it turned out he lived not far from us and knew my family.

  11. Imagine that you can buy Lotus Bisscoff. Biscuits in UK. We love them then I found a recipe for them so decided to make them. First I measured the ingredients then found I had no flour then I had to grind some cloves . This morning set to make them , oops no muscovado sugar but decided to use white sugar knowing they wouldn’t be the same but heyho whatever comes. Ok but certainly not the same, needs more spice and definitely muscovado because they look anemic.

  12. DJ My husband started smoking in his 20’s when he worked in Jersey. Guests in the hotel where he worked always gave the staff cigarettes. So he started smoking them. He promised he would stop when we got married. We went to Scarborough for our honeymoon . He excused himself to go to the bathroom and when he came back, hands behind his back with a thin stream of smoke which seemed to come from behind. You’ve guessed it.
Years later he promised my son he would quit when his wife got pregnant and it worked. He’s not smoked since.

  13. Alexa is set to remind my husband at 8am and 8 pm. But he goes out before 8 am to drop my daughter off at work then remembers when he gets back home. 8pm it’s usually me that reminds him when Alexa comes on because he’s usually asleep.

I've only written off a car and an aeroplane. I've had some narrow escapes on the high seas but I've not written off a boat yet. People aren't keen to join my crew!  It could be my swansong!

Good job I didn’t crew for you then Phil

  15. When we left Radcliffe 24 yrs ago they were starting to build behind our house on fields. Glad we left when we did We only have fields opposite us and we weren’t exactly over the moon when our next door neighbours planted 200 hazlenut trees. But there again we can still see the montains. Progress people have to live somewhere.

  16. While making some fig jam during the summer it became ready to set before I realised but thought it better not to continue cooking it. I put it into jars , left one out to use and put the rest in the freezer. Fig jam because it’s so sweet naturally  (I did use 1/4 of sugar needed) and I thought if it was left in storage that it would go mouldy. I did the same thing with kgs of lemons I squeezed.

  17. A few weeks before I got married I got the push . My employers promised to get a cleaning lady to come into the hairdressing salon where I worked. The promise never materialised even after hints and reminders.  My girls did the cleaning and sterilization so I told them not to do it anymore as I was so fed up of asking , so after a face to face “ discussion “ I was told to leave. To tell the truth I was glad because after having a lovely apprenticeship and a few years with my previous employer it was a relief not to be at their dishonesty. Don’t worry Melissa give yourself a break to decide which direction you want to go. Good luck.
