  1. Brew so sorry to hear about your brother. At one time I would have defended the UK NHS but having heard stories about it lately I don’t think I would bother . Our health service is good but when a particular operation is needed there’s a long list. Drs are easily available. I had to go the other day( must against my will as I hate going) rang at 9.30 and got an appointment at 11.10 Often if we ring before he starts surgery and he says come straightaway. Ring later and you can’t get in the same day. But then we live in a village not a big city. I have had a couple of major operations and was diagnosed and operated on in a couple of months so I am happy to be here as things may have been different in the UK. I’m not knocking NHS but am aware of the problems it has and hope they don’t go on for too long. I have 2 nieces that have just finished training as nurses and both have gone to uk. Talking to a dr during one of my ops about nursing staff and the problem they had of young ones leaving Italy to work in UK and wanted to know why. I couldn’t answer.

  2. I feel for those who have been affected by the floods and hope that the levels drop quickly. It’s frightening where excess water is. Here when it rains heavily it frightens me as the drains block straightaway as there is nowhere else to go. This happened in the summer and there were floods in the centre of the village. In London last week we saw the start of the floods in the underground. The newscaster gave his report saying each station in turn that was closed and find an alternative route then he grinned and wished everyone a very happy new year. Just a bit of fun in a very serious situation . At one point we did see water dripping through the ceiling and bags of sand  everywhere mopping up water. Worrying to say the least considering how deep we were.

  3. Just come back yesterday from a short break in London. Kath was there at the same time and we were hoping to meet up but things went wrong for us as we arrived. Arriving late and unable to do what we had planned, we made it the following morning then managed to fit in with our prior arrangements. We had many things planned plus my nephew was joining us and he had made plans for us so unfortunately I was unable to meetup with Kath. We did see a panto at the Palladium and had lunch at the Royal opera house courtesy of my nephew and his partner. I think in view of the 4 days free we did well considering that I couldn’t rush around the underground as my back played up.( Think Kaths husband can sympathize with me) I don’t think I’ve seen so many staircases and escalaters. We wanted to do some shopping too but found the shops we wanted were a train ride away so we gave them a miss and went to Harrods and Fortnum & Masons instead. Home now and relaxing with a “ broken back and painful ankles. Never mind it will soon be our wine Festival.

  4. Im trying to get in the Christmas mood but not having much success. Alex and I are eating lunch at my daughters tomorrow and it’s usually full of tasty delights so I’ve kept light today. It doesn’t seem like Christmas at all. It’s warm and there aren’t many decorations around. We have a park nearby that surrounds a high tower and every year there are nativity scenes in various corners. It’s a lovely sight but this year I haven’t seen it so maybe in a couple of days I’ll venture out to see them. Christmas here hasn’t the same atmosphere as in UK maybe because we are in a village.

I hope you all have a happy time, don’t eat or drink too much and be good or else Santa won’t leave you even a mince pie.
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY AND HEALTHY NEW YEAR.

  5. We have quite a few Rie deer around us and it’s quite common to drive down the country lanes and have to brake suddenly to let a couple or 3 or 4 prance across the road. I’m never quick enough to get a photo. The other day my husband had to stop to let 4 pass and then saw in the field another 6. He said it was a beautiful site.

  6. When I was working during my apprenticeship we had a lady that used to make her appointments every 3 weeks throughout the year. One appointment coincided with our holidays and we were to close. She wasn’t a happy bunny when I told her. She was so annoyed because she wanted us to change our holiday because it would upset her hair appointments. It caused friction between her and my boss but we thought she’s not going to come again. Great we thought but no she threw her money across the desk and walked out. She turned up 3 weeks later and never said a word.

  7. Not with the stress Thankyou. Yes for all the friends we made and still hear from them.  I miss that but not the “ don’t take any more bookings we are extra full”  or any awkward customer that doesn’t have the food already on the table ( almost) when he arrived.  One that grumbles because we’ve sold out of his favourite wine. We were only human and were able to do human things. But they were good times and we had fun now it’s time for retirement that Alex isn’t really enjoying.

  8. Let’s get Christmas over so we can start to prepare for our short break in London. It must be almost 10 years since I was there so looking forward to speaking English with the English and doing some much needed shopping ( that we can’t get here) . We have booked to see such a lot in the few days we are there including seeing the new Wonka film. This visit is the gift from my daughter for my 80 th birthday last year. We couldn’t go last year because my husband was in hospital having a hip replacement. My daughter only has certain times when she can have a break so it’s been difficult to fit in. She truly deserves a break and a medal for the work she does. She’s a chef and believe me it’s hard work plus staff who suddenly take days off at the busiest time or just don’t turn up. She starts work at 8am finishes at 3pm has to start back at 6 pm then whatever time she finishes sometimes 9 pm sometimes midnight. But she still creates superb dishes and makes time to make chutneys , desserts and jars of preserves. I see her react when people book for 12 at the busiest time don’t confirm then at the last minute when they arrive there’s only 4 of them meaning in reality that she is 2 tables left free that at the last minute she’s unable to fill. It’s so annoying as so many restaurants have this problem. we’ve booked at a restaurant in London for New Years Eve and have had to pay £ 50 deposit each with the rest of £65 each paid on the day. Not everyone will be paying up front but I think it’s fair and the right thing to do.
Expensive yes but we don’t want to end up at McDonalds. I’d sooner have a bag of crisps. I knew Kath was going and should be there now. We thought we’d be able to meet up but her husband has a strict itinerary, morning, afternoon and evening have been arranged. My nephew is joining us and we think he’s arranged a couple of things for us plus our few days are booked with various things ( strictly no touristy things). Hopefully we can each have a couple of hours that can be spared to meet.

I wish you all a very Happy Christmas and more important a healthy and happy New Year.

  9. Old jam can crystalise but as said before sugar can preserve it but if it’s unopened just tentatively taste it. I made some mincemeat 3 years ago ( I thought it was 2 yrs ago but on checking it’s 3) I used a jar the first year then forgot about it but I recently used it and it was delicious. I preserve a lot of fruit and veg and I’ve never been poisoned. Just be careful. I preserved some dried tomatoes last year. I soaked them to get rid of the extra salt dried them well placed them in jars and topped with EVO. Ready to add to any dish.

  10. Ian , I’m so pleased for you both. I know how relieved you must feel. Your post put me back a few years when I always seemed to get positive and negative just around Christmas. Give your wife my best wishes and have a great Christmas and an even Happier New Year

  11. I’m now wondering whether to have another covid jab along with flu jab. I wanted to get them done but forgot about them . I had a fall a couple of weeks ago and then got covid. In bed 2 days but I’ve been negative for more than 10 days. We are going away after Christmas so really rethought about these jabs but think I may have to miss covid one. I don’t know. I’m ringing Dr tomorrow.

  12. Thanks Lizzie yes it was a big surprise seeing I never have anything worth talking about.  Yes we’d already started to think about Christmas but the chefs are taking care of that it’s the little extras that are waiting. But at least my Christmas Cake is done and I think it’s already thirsty. It’ll have to wait though as I think at the moment the fumes will knock me out. Glad you enjoyed Zanzibar but sorry I missed R’s birthday. Say hello to him.

  13. Thankyou everyone for your messages. I should learn to keep quiet in company. The other week my sisters in law who we meet up twice weekly at least we’re having breakfast at the bar when we got talking about health. Now it’s unusual for me to catch a cold and I’ve never had ‘flu so it brought on a discussion. I shouldn’t have said anything because of what I have now. I’ve been lucky in the sense that I’m nearly always well and when I’m not I really do have something that needs attention. Thankyou once again.

  14. Well my day or should I say my week isn’t going well at all. I had a fall a few days ago and fortunately came out fairly well from it but I’m still suffering. I hit the shower door which caved inwards and I hit the base on my knees, arms, hip and across my middle Bruises everywhere, but that’s not all that afternoon I didn’t feel good you can imagine so I went to bed but woke up feeling worse. In short I had covid and have been with a temperature since.  Also I couldn’t keep food down and felt nauseous all the time. So I’m not going anywhere for the time being I’m just trying to figure out the most comfortable position to sit and sleep, watching what I eat and feeling thankful it wasn’t any worse.
