  1. This morning I saw a car and. Hertz van just a bit further up the road. A woman got out with something in her hands that she pushed through the grate. She returned to the car and a tiny kitten ran out following her. I waited til she’d collected the kitten again and as she drove away I stopped her and asked if it was her kitten. She said she had seen it in the middle of the road and pushed it through the gate to protect it. I was struggling to keep my 2 dogs under control because they want to get the kitten so I wasn’t able to take reg number. As it happened there were 2 kittens and making enquiries etc found out that the new neighbours (Tunisians or Moroccans) have 4 kittens. They were trying to eat the gravel on the road so we fed the poor things they were ravenous and they were fighting each other for the food. We have 4 dogs as I’ve mentioned before and we couldn’t let them outside in the courtyard as the kittens were making their way through the sides of the gate. This afternoon one of them was run over. The owners are renovating this cascina and there was no sign of them all day. So there’s all sorts of things in the yard and stable so presume they’ve just left the kittens there hoping they’d feed themselves. We are all upset and furious about it so when they do come back we have to tell them not to be so irresponsible. I know they aren’t probably pet orientated but we think they’ve got them as they have 4 children.

  2. At midday more or less we in Piemonte received an alert message . Only a notice about an early warning system that is now in use. Our phones rang a strange sound and this notice appeared. In view of all the disasters in the world in case we have any imminent dangers all phones will be alerted as long as info has been given by going online to compile a questionnaire. In view of  everything that is happening I think it’s a good thing.
We are getting concerned about all the immigration boats coming in to Lampedusa. It’s only a small island and up to now immigrants have been welcomed with open arms but now it’s getting too much. The other day there were 6000 immigrants plus odd small boats with 100 Persons  on board. Yesterday the new immigrants and the ones that have been there a while were fighting. There is only a certain amount of things that the island can do but those people coming in expect to be housed immediately.  France and Germany won’t accept anyone so where do they all go? It’s heartbreaking to see them getting off the boats. They are overcrowded with men, woman and children including pregnant women and small babies. One of which fell into the water and drowned. It takes a whole lot of courage to set out on a voyage such as this but when they arrive they expect to be fed and housed. How can a small island do all this. The Italian govt is trying to stop this or at least find a solution.  One immigrant gave an interview and told of his experience. He wasn’t allowed to take anything with him and was forbidden to board if had eaten in the last 24 hours. They are packed like sardines into boats that aren’t really sea worthy and many have lost their lives. The boat owners come and go and the poor people who are expecting a better life paying up to 3000$ + come to be joined by others who all expect better things but unfortunately it’s not all roses when the land.

  3. Cats aren’t my favourites because I’ve always had dogs but over the years we’ve had quite They roamed the area but always came home. At that time we had 2 cats and one day as I was in the garden I saw a tiny kitten peeping through the gate. There was no house around so I presumed it had been dumped there. So in she came and got to know the other animals. I expected some territorial clashes and was pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t the residents but the newcomers aggressive attitude. She got to be called Tiger.
Another cat we had in later years was called Fritzy as she was given to my daughter from her soon to become husband. He loved to surprise us by hiding behind chairs and jumping out at us as we passed. He always followed my daughter to keep her company until she reached the main road and then came home. Around this time I went into the village and I parked the car and 2 little kittens walked out from under the car. Overnight they must have found that the car wheels were warm.

Now all we have are strays that my husband feeds and send the dogs barmy.

John Lewis in Nottingham are doing the Quality Street tins again this year where you choose your own. We save our empty tins year on year. All about the green triangles for me!

Mrs B I save all my tins ( plastic) to because they are so useful. I usually give my grandchildren a couple each at Christmas plus their usual gift.

Just bought Heroes in Tesco for £4 (clubcard price). Haven’t looked at the weight -  perhaps it is less this year?

Margie Thank you, I think they are all 600 gr. Heroes at £4 even without club price they are cheap. Shall have to come over and get a few. I certainly won’t get them from BCS.

  6. Opened NS this morning to find an advert for BCS online shopping for exbrits. Occasionally we order for things we can’t find here and was just whisking through thinking if we order I only want tins of chocolates like I buy every year. When I first started ordering them they were about5-6£. I know all prices have increased but at €12.99 I draw the line. In Asti there’s a little group of cheap shops mixed in with better ones and there I found a shop called Action. They have everything including a couple of displays of chocolates and snacks. I found a tin of Heroes and another of celebrations at a price that was ridiculous. Outdated I thought , no they weren’t. I bought one of each and only paid 5€ each. Now I don’t know what they cost in UK but cannot understand why in a shop like this one should be able to sell at this price. BCS now is based in Holland so basically it should be cheaper than UK. IMO. If I can’t find them this year folks you will have to live without your English choccies and make do with mince pies.

  7. Food, heard this morning that my sisters in law are going into Asti to see the Sagra. It’s a food fair, procession of all the ancient agricultural ways of growing , preparing etc of food then there are stalls selling food. My sister in law said she was wanted to eat some donkey meat. I’ve eaten it before and even eaten sausages made from the meat. It was good. It was popular a few years ago but we don’t hear much about it now.

  8. We have had the same or similar problem with a gas company. We have GPL( I know it’s different in uk but that’s what it is here) Years ago they installed a pellet stove which was fine until , My son and his family came to live upstairs. The house has 11 rooms and we only need a small ground apartment We divided the house so that we were all independent. The only thing that couldn’t be separated was the water supply but we found a way to make it work without any distress.  We have the stoves serviced regularly but everytime they come they have to return because either they’ve left a valve open or something doesn’t work. We got really fed up with them so we found a plumber of the old fashioned type . He’s very reliable and gets the job done and we have no more problems. We have a large room at the back of the house that was once a courtyard . It’s always cold in there as it faces north so the original plumber installed a tall radiator . It never worked and the ideas they had was to take the water supply from somewhere and put copper pipes practically half way through the house to make the radiator work. We said “ No way” Then they said we’ll put a small valve and then it will work . It didn’t. We left it for a while and told the new plumber about it . At once he knew what the problem was , fitted something and it works a treat. The original plumbers are a big firm of gas fitters and plumbers but aren’t worth  anything. Yesterday our hot water was non existent we called him and he fitted an expansion tank to replace the one that was leaking. He returned today to check the pressure . Everything is fine and he even accepted the offer of a coffee. He sat down with my husband and has a good memory jog of their childhood ( both Sicilian). The young ones have no patience.

  9. Goats meat at Easter . We see this on a lot of menu’s . It’s not the older goats but the baby ones so it’s very tender. Only eaten it once and then felt cruel and guilty. In fact don’t eat much meat now there are so many different things which are a lot more tasty.

  10. When I came here before we were married my mother in law made me so welcome and we sat down to a delicious meal. Afterwards I found out that it was rabbit in fact THE rabbit I was cuddling earlier that day. Living here I’ve got to like everything but the only things I will not touch are snails however they are cooked and tripe the same. I’ve learned to eat all sorts of things that being English wouldn’t have thought about eating such as Truffles. The smell of them is disgusting and until a few years ago  I refused to even try them. Having heard so many saying how good they are I plucked up courage and decided I would try them. But only a few very thin slices. I hadn’t known what I had missed, they were delicious and every year I look forward to the truffle season.

  11. Didn’t know it ever was a delicacy. I’ll have to ask locally. Where was he in the south? I’m sure it wasn’t in this area as we have a lot of wild animals that the locals hunt in the season. Wild boar, miniature hares, rabbits and the small mountain deers. Chickens , everyone has them if they live in the country.

  12. Phil I don’t know how long you had to suffer at our restaurant but I’m so sorry:laughing: . I feel so sorry for you not to be able to enjoy all those Gourmet Evenings that were so popular and half Nottingham restaurants copied. I enjoy my Forrin food.smile2

  13. Margie I will have to try the rice/pasta in a bottle for my daughters dog. We look after her when she’s at work ( lunch time and evenings). She’s used to being with company when she’s at home but when we’ve got her she’s a full time job. She’s a miniature pinscher and lets you know what she wants in no uncertain terms. Lately she’s been scratching everything, cupboard doors front door , kitchen door even the dish washer. I’ve been spraying her with water but even though she retreats it doesn’t stop her. She does mind water at all so a while ago we had to keep the gate to the pool firmly locked as a couple of times she leans over and gets ready to jump in. She did manage once , we’d just got out and heard a splash . We were at the furthest end and we didn’t know how to get in to get her out the quickest.

Can you all remember the Fish Monger he would have real crabs for sale in his window, Allso crab meat ohhhh can see it now in a sandwich I have tried to buy a tin of crab but know luck.  Question what has happend to all the crabs that lived in our seas?? have they all emigrated?

Think I may have eaten them all Mary. I was born near the sea and my grandparents still lived there. I spent my school

holidays every year with them. Grandad used to take me along the tide lines and rock pools hunting crabs , winkles , treading for eels etc . I adore crabs and ate so many as a child. My grandad used to go crabbing frequently and he’d bring a sackful home every time, he’d tip them out out onto the kitchen floor and mum said there’d be crabs running everywhere. She grew up with the same passion. And she taught me how to dress a crab and to be careful of “ the dead man’s fingers”

  15. My son when he was small and just beginning to learn Italian said to his auntie. My glue hurts .  Collo is neck and colla is glue. He always went ahead with words he wasn’t sure about but my daughter always hesitated. Fortunately having their school holidays with cousins etc they soon had a command of the language and even understand the dialect. Italian in-laws live in France and their daughter lives in Scotland . Their children speak 3 languages and the youngest is only 6.It’s lovely hearing all these languages with a Scottish accent. I could listen to him all day.

  16. My daughter used to go to the hoppystool. Myself learning Italian  got me almost in trouble. I used to preserve a lot of veg and fruit. I always sterilized the jars but also added a “preservative”. That’s what it’s called in English but in Italian it means something else. ( a condom) was my face red when my husband pointed it out to me. It’s a good job the chemist had known me for years.

  17. Mary a similar thing happened with my son but fortunately didn’t result in death. When we came to live here in 1988 my son was at the age he wanted to go out meet up with his friends etc. We bought him a moped as all his friends had them and because we don’t have a bus service living in the country and a long way to walk into centre.  He had taken his moped to change a tyre and was going to see his aunt when turning a corner he slid on the ice and went almost into a plate glass shop front. I was at home thinking that he and my husband were late. When they returned they didn’t tell me that they’d been at the hospital. He suffered shock and injuries to his back. Nothing drastic but enough to tell himself not to progress to a motorbike.
