  1. My son when he was small and just beginning to learn Italian said to his auntie. My glue hurts .  Collo is neck and colla is glue. He always went ahead with words he wasn’t sure about but my daughter always hesitated. Fortunately having their school holidays with cousins etc they soon had a command of the language and even understand the dialect. Italian in-laws live in France and their daughter lives in Scotland . Their children speak 3 languages and the youngest is only 6.It’s lovely hearing all these languages with a Scottish accent. I could listen to him all day.

  2. My daughter used to go to the hoppystool. Myself learning Italian  got me almost in trouble. I used to preserve a lot of veg and fruit. I always sterilized the jars but also added a “preservative”. That’s what it’s called in English but in Italian it means something else. ( a condom) was my face red when my husband pointed it out to me. It’s a good job the chemist had known me for years.

  3. Mary a similar thing happened with my son but fortunately didn’t result in death. When we came to live here in 1988 my son was at the age he wanted to go out meet up with his friends etc. We bought him a moped as all his friends had them and because we don’t have a bus service living in the country and a long way to walk into centre.  He had taken his moped to change a tyre and was going to see his aunt when turning a corner he slid on the ice and went almost into a plate glass shop front. I was at home thinking that he and my husband were late. When they returned they didn’t tell me that they’d been at the hospital. He suffered shock and injuries to his back. Nothing drastic but enough to tell himself not to progress to a motorbike.

  4. When we lived in Nottingham and I was very small I was approached by a man, youth or aged person. We lived in Huntington st and all the the exits came out into a large cobbled yard. We had a family of 3 girls next door but one and going to and fro was easy to get to call them all . They were a lot older than me . One evening I left their house to go home. It was just getting dark when this person stopped me and started asking me all sorts of questions including what school

i went to etc then it got what colour knickers do you wear. At that point a heard a voice shouting at me to go home quickly and the man shot off. Apparently it was my friends mother who had watched me getting home. I shudder often when I hear these rape stories. I consider myself very lucky. Today I don’t remember much about my young childhood but that gives me nightmares.

  5. As everyone is saying here” Che Culo”

The weather is definitely cooler but severe storms have been forecast. We kept getting very high winds that only lasted minutes and black skies which we thought was the beginning of the worst kind.  We’ve just watched the news and the storms have caused so much havoc, trees uprooted in Asti that is only 20 minutes away. The rest of the news told us where the storms were traveling and they said all over Piemonte but excluding Valle Tanaro and another area. We didn’t listen to the last few words as we were saying “ che Culo”  Phew

  6. At home now met up with a few friends and in-laws. Saw a few young ones that have now grown but lovely to see them

joining in local festivities. Strange to see the shops open at night especially the butcher. Next week it is the main Summer event. Don’t know if you’ve heard of Bobby Solo , he’s

a singer from the 70’s. He’s always been popular and still is. He sings like Elvis or I should say similar style. He will be one of the singers in the concert.  The village comes alive during this festival as the concerts attract many people from outside.

  7. Notte bianco tonight. Festivities in main  square everywhere is open all night. Tables everywhere restaurants and bars are serving food for takeaway or sitting down. It’s early yet but lots of people around . Music groups are walking through everywhere. Lovely atmosphere and what makes it even better is that there’s a lovely breeze perhaps every now and again a little stronger but it’s FANTASTIC. Hope it rains tomorrow.

  8. Let’s get this terrible summer over and then we can start to think about Christmas. I for one will be pleased to feel cold. Last year my daughter and I baked lots of mini Christmas cakes. I made 8 jars of mincemeat and still have 6 left so that’s one less thing to do. I think mini cakes are probably better for us anyway and they do look pretty when decorated. People here are shocked when we start to make Christmas caked and mincemeat so early. They are convinced that everything will go rotten. But little do they know. ;)

  9. What a lovely surprise this morning on my husbands 80 th birthday. Had just finished hoovering my kitchen floor (one dog is moulting so plenty fur) Knock on the kitchen door and my niece and family were there carrying a tray full of pastìccini all lit with blue candles. Seeing as we as a family are celebrating tonight they thought they would be the first of my in-laws to give him best wishes. But come Sunday it will be a bigger celebration with his sisters and brothers and families. So the day began on a happy note.

First time I’ve had cream cakes for breakfast. !!

  10. Think you’re right Margie. My husbands just been looking on ( painfully thinking what the hells it called)? Something or other and it’s about growing up Italian. He said it’s perfect and how he remembers it. Getting late for school and they closed him out so he climbed up onto a high roof and lowered himself down through a window. Making things from nothing, scrumping fruit and getting the fright of his life when the farmer shot at him and many more. I keep telling him to write a book. Working from the age of 11 has taught him a lot that books don’t cover. In the tiny village in Sicily where he was born children had no choice especially from large families. Most had a little tiny allotment and had to work the land or look after the sheep and goats. But when it came to summer and enjoyment they made the most of it. They danced with the minimum of music. One had a guitar another an accordion yet another with the metal thing you put in your mouth and twanged it to make music. Everyone got together and brought something to eat and of course the wine was never missing because they had no water. I remember when he took me to Sicily before we were married. Everyone had buckets and bowls of water in their bathrooms because the taps were dry. Still can’t thing of what it was called. Think I’m starting with dementia :Shock:Sorry Margie got off the track a bit. It is lovely to outside and enjoy the coolness of the evening and I’m sure the dog enjoyed it too . Our dogs dash outside and stretch out then realize the ground is hot so go back in and stretch belly down on the tiles or under the bed in the shade.

  11. PhilI don’t think there’s a chance to go back to Nottingham even more so now with Brexit which means Passports. I got a one a while ago although I did say I wasn’t going to get one. Alex doesn’t want to know. The nearest I think my daughter and I will be to Nottingham will be London. A late birthday present from my daughter , we couldn’t celebrate because Alex was in hospital. Then it was going to be too hot in the summer so we’re hoping to go after Christmas when she’s got a few days free.

Congratulations to Alex at 80. I don’t suppose there’s much chance now of you both returning to Nottingham to open another excellent eating place? We started at La Bucca and followed you around until you left.

But you didn’t follow us here did you? It’s Alex’s birthday today its not today. . It must have been the balmy evening air last night that’s caused the fogginess in my head . I will pass on the wishes Thankyou Lizzie and Phil.
