That ski lift was gone when I started at Clifton Barnzey. I started there in 1964 and I think it was taken out a couple of years before then. Trev Shaw, who is a few years older than me and who's Dad and Uncle worked at Clifton as Electricians remembers it from his trips down there. It ran from no2 pit bottom down the South Main Returns drift. BTW, don't know if anyone remembers the Shaws??? I think there are seven of them, all lived in the Meadows, Wilford Road end. The older two story houses on Clifton Estate were "prefabs" The walls were precast and lifted into place with a crane. My Aunt was one of the first to move there in the early 50's, shopping wasn't too good there at the time and transport was very poor, before the bridge was built. She felt isolated at that time, but things improved. I lived in one of those house's for a few years after we were moved for Meadows redevelpment and lived opposite the Comprehensive school on Farnborough Road.. I recall the old single story prefabs too, though never saw inside one.

No Cali, apparently the earlier CD's had a problem with the "base" material reacting with the aluminium, thats all those made during the mid eighties. Then they said all those made after a certain date were going to last forever....WRONG!! Now we are hearing reports of CD "rot" and DVD's doing the same! Basically it's corrosion of the thin aluminium recording platter thats the problem...

"Swagmen" also had a "bluey" in the form of a blanket wrapped around their possessions and slung off a stick which they carried on their shoulders. Yep a bluey was also a jacket similar to the pommie "Donkey" jacket too.. The cartoon charactor I referred to Dennis was one used in a building society advert of the 70's and 80's in NSW when I lived there mate.. Caz might recall that one

I don't have a 4 wheel drive Ilko, but mine is an extended cab pickup truck, big V8 5.7litre :D

All vehicles over here have to have the clutch depressed to start them, there's a safety switch on the start circuit. Try and start the car without depressing the clutch...nothing...Automatics have to be in neutral..I think Or park, can't recall, been a while since I drove one of them

Dunno what the answer is Ilko t'old lad....What with CD "rot" and now word reaching us that DVD's are prone to the same problems, haven't got a clue.

Hey Chris, my drinking day's didn't start until I lived at the London Road end of the Meadows. I only went in the "Stute" because I got automatic membership being a pit worker. Never went into the Clifton Hotel I did live in Osman Terrace, so was opposite the Hosene works and almost opposite Clara's fish and chip shop. I even went out with a lass, Val, who lived up our terrace a few doors up from me too.

Anyone start their education at that school?? It was in St Anns district.

Anybody attend this "hall of learning" My Dad went there, all my Uncles on my Mum's side attended.

Hey Caz, where was Ryehill Terrace?? I knew of a Ryehill Street and I lived in Ryehill Cottages until the Council moved us out prior to demolition.

Haaaaa, me old stomping ground, learned to "pull" a pint behind that bar under Barry Price's guidance when he were the Landlord. That would have been around 1967 to about 1969. Used to get me a few freebies and some extra spending money B) Ryehill Cottages piccie, just to the left was the Bookie's shop, he were a strange un, big bloke, never smiled and always gave you a dirty look....

In the second piccie, just past the Ford van was Rye Hill Cottages, I used to live at No4 after I was married the first time. Just past, two doors down was where my Mum and Dad lived, on Kirke-White Street. Glad I was right about the Rifleman. My Daughter collected loads of ten pence and 50 pence coins when she was born off the patrons at the Rifleman!! Hey Ilko, have you found any piccies of the Sir Richard Arkwright pub on Arkright Street almost corner of Kirke-White Street??? I've searched to no avail. John
