I keep thinking about doing the advanced motoring test but I think I would end up disagreeing with the examiner on techniques

Why not go for an assessment, it's free. You may well argue, (I did, quite a lot actually) but there's an equal chance you may learn something even if you don't carry on.

  2. TBI has it right, there are two sides. My neighbour is an avid cyclist and yes I tease him about his gear but he conscientious and never seems to have problems. Then there are the idiots on YT riding two abreast on a single carriage (60mph) road who give the policeman a hard time with 'I know my rights , I know the law, pedals before power' etc. He only stopped them to give a bit of friendly advice but they were screaming police harassment.

It's not just the gay Lycra brigade either. Going back a bit Jeremy Vine acted like a total kn..b head in London when he got into a contretemps with a lady motorist. True she was well out of order and quite rightly taken to court but if he had had a little consideration maybe it wouldn't have ended the way it did.

  3. Being over simplistic there shouldn't be any difference. Your house will use X amount of energy to raise the temperature to the desired level. That temperature will gradually bleed away and need to be replaced (that's what all this talk of insulation is about).

It will lose energy at a fairly constant rate so the question is do you replace it as it's lost (like trickle charging) and maintain a constant temperature or let it cool and use the same amount of energy but over a shorter time to bring it back up. This is, as I said, over simplifying it but you get the basic idea.

Here the heating is on 24/7 and the rads and underfloor have their own thermostats set at 22 downstairs and various upstairs depending on what the room is used for.

We seem to use the same as our neighbours who use the cool and boost method.

  4. What you will get is someone who will buy it for a pound, promise huge investments that will never happen and use it as a way to reduce capital gains liabilities. They stand every chance of never having heard of  Notts County with a strong possibility they were not even born in England never mind Nottingham!

Will they speak like wot we do me duck? I doubt it. More likely to use phrases like 'going forward,'  'blue sky thinking'  and what ever jingoistic claptrap is this months favourite.

I'm not a football fan and I think it sad that clubs go to the wall but they are sitting on a prime chunk of real estate and greedy eyes are watching...

  5. Taking the plunge and finally embracing the 21century I bought a super dooper TV to go with the new Virgin TV and Broadband service we had recently.

What a disaster! anyone have a spare 10 yr old they can rent out for awhile?

The TV remote is the most annoying. It puts a pointer on the screen which appears to have no relationship with where the damn remote is pointing, even backwards and under a cushion it's still there!.

No idea what has been pressed but now it nags us to speak to it for voice commands. 'no sod off' 'please speak clearly' 'no go away' 'do you require assistance?' 'will you just %!^&% off'

Get rid of that by changing to the Virgin box only to told it needs to retune itself, it drives me potty!

The number of  'apps' as they are called is huge... sob.. all I want to do is watch TV. Scrolling through acres of channels that need a subscription, finding some channels are not available or have moved and 'would you like to retune now - please choose full, aerial, digital only or manual'...… aaaargh

It says it can use the internet. Haven't managed to do it yet but if I do why would I want to stream from my PC or my phone? They are connected to the same service surely?

In my profile I put technology as one of my interests, I may have to revisit it.

  6. So that's £48M this year added to the £47 it lost last year and so on. Is the loss calculated before the £4.8M payback or after?  They reckon on paying it all back by 2034, I think they are dreaming and it will finish up with a huge chunk of it being written off - guess who'll pay for that!

Then again I'm quite happy about it....  I live in Derbyshire  ;)
