  1. Been on Youtube looking at some Ten Years After footage, didn't realise how animated Leo was, reminds me of Floyd, the bass player in the Muppets!
  2. Regarding the Beefiest, Beatiest, Barbeque, I spent all day there helping to set up and was given the 'complimentary' ticket shown which I insisted on paying for! In the evening I was again hanging about helping The Rave-ons with their set up when I was approached by a tall leather clad bloke who wanted to have a word with the group. It turned out that The Jaybirds van had broken down and needed some help getting their gear on site. It was of course Leo Lyons and what a great group the Jaybirds were. The event was billed as a barbeque but I don't remember any eats!
  3. Being a teenager in the 60's, music was all important and it was at Gedling school that this tale begins. Studying for CSE music, lessons were mainly classical, Handel's Water Music, Holst's Planet's Suite etc. Music but not what we'd be listening to on Radio Luxembourg! F.D.Wilson (him with the floppy hair) was both our music teacher and form teacher and one day after assembly we asked him if he could play 'Side Saddle', the Russ Conway tune. Without any hessitation he promptly played it on the assembly hall piano - very impressive. Another musical memory, probably a year
  4. Many moons ago, probably late 60's, saw a big posh car (Bentley or Rolls) on Mapperley top with the reg 130 LOX! I wonder who that belonged to?
  5. Here you are Carni, that's the outside sorted! Spent many happy hours there in the 60's, playing records and ping pong. Remember being banned from playing 'Glad All Over' 'cos we all all used to bang the ping pong bats on the table and stamp our feet! On one occasion we had a trampoline in there, can anybody remember that? Will hopefully be starting a new thread soon - 'Gedling School & Beyond - A Musical Journey'.....you might find it interesting?
  6. With reference to post #187 - The photo shows Ronnie Madden on a 1963 school trip to Germany & Switzerland. I could be wrong but I think this might have been the first trip abroad by the Trent bus company. Here is another photo to hopefully bring back some memories. These two photo's would have been taken August 4th/5th in Heidelberg and the only two people I can put names to are Philip Shaw on the right and next to him Mr Davies. His lady-friend/wife is next to him and the dude in the middle with the cigarette was from the hotel and acted as our guide. It might
  7. Andy, would that be with long trousers or shorts! I was into the third year before my knees were deprived of sunlight - up until then I would no doubt have been wearing standard grey, knee length socks, after then who knows!! How did you manage to keep your socks up?
  8. Angela, standards must have gone to pot from the time of the photo in post #1. I don't think you'd be allowed in the line up with knee length tartan socks - I bet even the boys were wearing white socks, apart from David Griffiths that is who obviously wasn't told to wear his school blazer!!
  9. Angela, nice of you to join in. Talking of Cuban heels, it was not easy getting your Mum to buy fashionable school wear in the 60's but I do remember the boys wearing metallic looking rain coats available in either blue or brown. The synthetic material was not very good, was not very rainproof and ripped easily - I was the proud owner of a blue one!
  10. Only need identification of these four former Gedling inmates to complete the line up in the photograph in post #1 Thanks for everybody's help
  11. No offence meant Andy, I was only abbreviating your user name!
  12. You're completely wrong there Bub, that's Anne Hathaway!!
  13. Here's another photo from 1964 with some of the 'faces' from post #1 It includes Bridget Thompson, Carol Detheridge and I think on the right of Carol is John Spears (Spud) and maybe Mick Newall. I'm not sure which class the two older ladies are from?
  14. Thanks David, I'll update the team sheet. Could that be Marilyn Wright next to Susan Huckle?
  15. Well done Banjo, I knew we'd find someone that would name names. I made a comment on another post that we didn't have a lot to do with those in the years above and below us. It's now clear that we didn't even know who was in the other classes in our own year!
  16. It looks like Mr Greenwood (wearing a school tie?) and middle of the back row could be Peter Cummings but I don't know where I plucked that name from! I suppose Sheila Lancaster is in there somewhere, could be middle row on the right!
  17. Not sure where this photo fits in with Bazzer's 62/63 but it was supplied by Sheila Lancaster and was in the Evening Post on Jan 20th 1998 to celebrate a 50th year for pupils that attended 1959-63. I think this was the year above my 64/65 photo and I recognise some faces but can't be sure of any of the names. I'm sure Bazzer & carni must recognise some of these?
  18. Bubblewrap, sadly Graham Fryer (2005) and John Frudd (2015), no longer with us. They were still in Nottingham so spotted anouncements in The Post. Those that have moved away and the girls who have married are going to be harder to spot! I think Christine Capel who was school caretaker Tommy Capel's daughter and was younger than us, also left us quite some time ago. Hopefully most of us are still alive and kicking!
  19. Remembering names and faces from over 50yrs ago is interesting to say the least. The memory sometimes just needs a jog so here is a speech day programme from 1966 which refers to the previous year when the first 5th formers tackled their CSE's. A lot of the school paperwork was produced on a printing press which I think was in the metalwork shop?
  20. As previously mentioned, some of the footballers from Gedling also played for Parliament Street Meths. Their home ground was at Colwick crossings and was called Woodview. There were two pitches with the smaller pitch forming a tee with the main pitch. The changing room building also contained a big communal bath. Looking back I don't know how we did it but often we would play for the school in the morning and then PSM in the afternoon with a quick 'boot clean' and a bit of lunch in between. I seem to remember also, the girls at Gedling providing refreshments after the game and sometimes i
  21. O.k. David, might have made up the 'Thumper' bit but I'm sure we used to sing one or two rude ditties when we were travelling to away games. The question now is how many of the team can you name. I think Steve Wheldon might have been in goal and Keith Green I'm sure was the captain. Also, Johnny Harker springs to mind but I can't remember what he looked like, only that he was a tough one! The old school is looking a bit sad now and may be closing at the end of this year. There are also plans to build around a thousand new homes on the Gedling Colliery site so the landscape as we knew it wi
  22. This image should answer some questions asked in post #132 by DAVIDW The bottom photograph shows the dreaded 'bank' though it doesn't look so frighteneing from this angle!
  23. One Ronnie Madden....there's only one Ronnie Madden..!! But then there was Sue Madden!! (Photograph taken in August 1963 at Cologne) By the way, have spotted someone in Bazzer's photo, eighth from the right - that's Dusty Springfield!
  24. Time to fill in the team sheet for the photo in post #1. With help from DAVIDW's grey matter, have now put names to most of the faces so hoping other Nottsalgians may be able to fill in the blanks - a full house would be great!
  25. David, glad you liked the photo. With Mr Wilson being our form teacher I think it's fourth year but could be wrong! Have one or two more interesting photo's and memorabilia from the mid 60's which I know will interest you. Watch this space!
