stanners1984 0
Hello! I'm trying to find out some of the history of Windmill Lane, particularly the semi-detatched houses next to the steps that lead up the side of King Edward park - there only seems to be about 20 or so of these, and they look pretty old.... I didn't even know that there was an asylum on there until I started researching!! Could these houses possibly have been built for the staff of the asylum? Thanks in advance - any info at all is massively appreciated! xxx

Cliff Ton 10,468
Welcome to Nottstalgia. Have you found our existing thread on the subject of the asylum at Sneinton ? There's quite a bit of information there. http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=12756 And can you clarify exactly which houses you are referring to ? Do you mean those on Dakeyne Street ? stanners1984 0
Hello again! No, I mean the ones on Windmill Lane, as you look at the Adelaide, there's King Edward Park to the right, then some steps that lead down to St Chads Rd (I think that's the road anyway) and then there's the houses I'm talking about, they start at 109 I think. My great aunt lived at 127 when I was a kid and I remember her house having a fireplace in the cellar and an amazing view of town from the back.
Cliff Ton 10,468
That'll be these houses. https://goo.gl/maps/AH174xk2R3A2 Looking on various old maps, they were built around the turn of the century (19th-20th) but by that time the asylum was no longer nearby, so I don't think they were for staff. But I agree that there are amazing views from the rear gardens of those houses. Moving along the road slightly, to the side of the Adelaide, you get this panorama of Nottingham. https://goo.gl/maps/D8KnB42Wjdw This is the area in the 1890s, and it shows the asylum but not houses on your stretch of Windmill Lane. However there were houses on Dakeyne Street and around that area.
