I just keep pulling it up as best I can, hoping it will eventually give up trying. However, we had a very old wall in the garden of our last house which was almost being held together by the ivy. If I tried to pull the ivy off the wall, chunks of lime mortar and bits of brick came off as well! I quite like some kinds of ivy - like that large leaved type that turns red in Autumn and grows up house walls.

Drill holes in it's main stem and pour neat Roundup into the holes. Worked for me when we lived in California.

By far the best way to rid yourself of any unwanted plant is to dig it out, ensuring that no roots are left behind in the soil.
