Thursday afternoon, there was a guy in his early 20's knocking on all the doors in Trowell, with the aim of giving each household a ticket, advertising the chance to win a new Nissan Micra, or £6k cash.

Now, being of the "theres no such thing as a free lunch" person, I asked where was the catch, he said there was no catch, just that if you won anything, and that there were other prizes up for grabs, you tell all your friends and neighbours, adding that they were a new electrical company, just starting up in Basford, (despite it being a Lincoln phone number 01522 306128 on the ticket) and that this was their way of spreading the word. The ticket has RTS Services on it.

Anyway, I refused, but he triply assured me that there were absolutely no catches, and they were not trying to sell me something, so I took the ticket, and gave my mobile number as requested, "so we can contact you if you win". I thought no more of it until 24 hours later, when I got a call.

"Hello Mr Strong, just calling to say your ticket has been entered into the draw, and guess what, you've been lucky! Your ticket number has come up, and you have been awarded a free shampoo for all of your carpets"

At that point I told them exactly what I thought of them, and requested they remove my details from their database.

I was in the past, a little more trusting, and accepted one of these "free" carpet cleaning "prizes" and basically they are THEE most high pressure salesmen, trying to get you to buy an astonishingly high priced cleaner system, that makes Dyson seem like Tesco value range.

Dont give them your details if you are contacted, its a waste of time!

You didn't buy one of these in about 1995 did you Mick.?? Remember my ex, Lorna (The model)?? Read on!! (Sorry if it was my fault!!)

An 'Ex' girlfriend of mine landed a job selling "Kirbys", we parted pretty friendly and knowing that even for just doing a 'demo' at a house she would get a bit of money, I agreed to let her come round and go through the motions , even though I told her I was just doing her a favour and had absolutely no intention whatsoever to buy one.

She turned up at the appropriate time and went ahead with the demo, showing how much grit it removed , it's strength/durability etc. At the end she then proceeded to borrow my phone to 'Ring her boss' to tell him the out come, and find out if he could reduce the price, it was a long call, unbeknown to me it was a premium call number that they use and the call cost nearly £9.00!!

She also told me that she would get commission if I recommended (I think) 5 friends to her company who might want to buy one. So I pulled out my "Little red book" and gave her the details of a few ex acquaintances (Folks who had caused me grief etc , no true mates you understand..........Honest!!) It wasn't till a few weeks when I bumped in to a good friend who asked what the hell I was doing giving her details to Kirby telling them she might want to purchase one. I assured her that I hadn't but that, yes , I had had a demo myself recently. Then the penny dropped , I hadn't seen my "Little Red Book" recently and it dawned on me that the little cow had pinched it and called everyone of my contacts giving my name as a recommender!!............BITCH!!!!!!!!!!

When I first came to the states, a Kirby vacuum was "THE" thing to have for the "I've got it all" housewife. They seem to have lost their status since then, and now you hardly see them for sale. The only place I do notice them is at hotels etc. - but they probably use them because the parts are all the same over all the years!

Bottom line - they are no better than any modern Hoover - which is 1/3 the price!

I Remember Lorna, Did her mum go to the Ariba Club.

We went to a Party at her house at Basford somewhere.

Together with a woman we all said Looked like Hilda Baker?

That's her, her mum ran an escort agency, took to me immediately, saw me not so much as a son in law, but more as a female security guard!!
