Just remembered what the name of the bar is in the building that used to house Toby's. THE APPROACH

I think it's by 'The Action' a top live band in the sixties. Paul Carrack was in Ace, Roxy Music and Squeeze but I didn't think he was ever a member of The Small Faces (who evolved into The Faces).
-
The West End Arcade was the first thing that came into my mind too. I thought it was built before that time though?

Hickling was a local village renowned for it's outdoor skating. There are stories of the villagers in the old days skating on the Grantham Canal there carrying lanterns. Quite a captivating scene it must have been. Hickling Basin

On the very corner, between the Blue Bell and Langtry's (The Peach Tree) is the Turf Tavern.

Another view with Griffin & Spalding on the left.

Yes, very much a department store (and a very nice one) selling all kinds of different goods. It had (and still has as Debenhams) entrances on Long Row and Market Street. Here's a pic of it in the background:

The cinema at Sherwood was called The Metropole. It stood on the East side of Mansfield Road almost opposite Edwards Lane After it closed it became a Kwiksave supermarket for man years. It was demolished comparatively recently
-
It's still the same, Charlie. I came out of there in late 1978 and 29 years later I still haven't got out of Jessops. I think I'm going to get served any moment now though.

Waring & Gillow on King Street was a furniture store, Charlie.
-
Thanks for that, Mick.
-
I'd be grateful if you could point out to me where, Mick? I've tried the search feature (for the Mechanics and the Moulin Rouge) and drawn a blank for both.
-
Maybe you're right then, Frank. Boots' official site gives the first store address as Pelham Street.
-
Cheers I know (knew) the Mechanics building alright, but wasn't there a Mechanics Cinema distinct from that building do you know? I used to use The Dolphin in my days at Trent Poly. It became 'Byron's' after that.
-
But worth it though! :-) Thanks, Frank. I always wondered about that. I only have a vague notion of Trinity Square before the car park but wasn't the Mechanics Cinema there too? I have this notion of walking up some steps to it's front entrance (I know I was taken there) - opposite where Jessops is now? Wish I could find a pic of it.

Must have had pretty small cornets up your way, Mick.

"The TEN O'CLOCK HORSES will come and get yer" Still terrified by that one... "Wait till yer dad gets home" Even more terrified of that one...superseded by a stomach-churning feeling of impending doom.

I can remember mum taking me there, I think to watch Goldfinger. I do sort of remember it but I'd be really interested to know exactly which business on Mansfield Road it is now (if it indeed still exists). La Scala was similar in a way as I remember it had a kind of period (was it called 'The Classic' at that point) when it showed blue movies.
-
Might that be the Mouline Rouge? (sp)

No buddy, just a little list of notable things.

Must be a Redhill thing Eric! :-) I think I heard that expression every Sunday until I left home.

Linby is the answer I was looking for Bip. That's the story I was told as a kid. Linby is a lovely little village - a very interesting place too. Linby and Papplewick are the only predominantly stone village in Notts. I believe The top cross and the bottom cross Linby docks and their association with child labour The original stone quarries A fascinating fount of local history.

Starting with 'La Scala' on Market Street. Did anyone used to go there? I used to get taken by my mum after school every week on a Thursday for the cartoons. Roadrunner, Speedy Gonzalez etc. There used to be a travelogue type feature as a break between the animated cartoons. Every single there was a huge big fellah who used to sit on his own there surrounded by popcorn guffawing at Goofy and the rest!

That's a pretty good description I'd say. Glassware, pottery, ornaments that type of thing. The building is a pub and venue nowadays.
-
Yes, I used the word 'wobbies' (wabbies?) as a kid. My mum also would use that same expression, 'die you bogger'. She used to use that on my dad quite a lot too.
