  1. Your hubby is a couple of years younger than me maybe things changed quite a bit in that time. All depends on perspective too. One person may really enjoy a certain holiday destination or restaurant, another may have nothing good to say about the same place. Dave
  2. Hi Craig. Yes, that was a popular configuration in its day and Wharfedale were considered to be one of the best speaker manufacturers in the world. If I remember rightly the big argument centered on whether the Leak, which was one of the first transistorized quality amplifiers, was better or inferior to the existing tube (valve) amps of the day like the Rogers. Reading some of the online stuff that argument goes on right to the present day. Dave
  3. Rob and I got into talking about snakes the other day based on his Cobra avatar. Thought being as this forum is "Owt abaaht Nowt" it might be ok to post here. Nottingham does not have too many snakes as far as I know except maybe some two legged ones but we won't try to discuss them. :-) They are everywhere. Beefsteak asked about a snake seen in Florida. Not sure what it would be but probably some none poisonous garter snake in such a public place. Most of the bad ones in Florida would probably be around the Everglades. Rattlers can be found in most places in GA. Haven't seen any rig
  4. I have a thread started on Chandos Street school under the schools section of this board. Would be interested to read hubbies thoughts on the old place. Dave
  5. I am STILL using those Wharfedale super Lintons and they sound as good as the day I got 'em. The Thorens TD150 turntable also continues to run smoothly whenever I need it. I'm not even sure Wharfedale exists anymore do they? Dave
  6. Nothing to do with Hi fi but reminds me of a lady where I went to check out a 'frig. She said it had stopped working but it was running just fine when I got there. Checked it over and told her to just keep an eye on it and let us know real quick if it acted up again. After all we can't just replace parts and HOPE we fixed it. She then asked me when it would act up again. To which I replied, "I don't know." after all I didn't. She then got quite huffy and demanded to know when it would act up again. I suggested that she might like to contact a fortune teller rather than a tech'. I prob
  7. Hey Rob! Got your e-mail. Thanks. Didn't realize Bingham had grown so much. It was just a dot on the map off the fosse Way when I lived there. Dave
  8. Guess so Bip. Never had any of those cars but an interesting read nonetheless.
  9. Any of you guys ever attend here? I was there from 1956 until I left school in 1960. Actually end of term in 1959. Interesting place. Discipline was TOUGH. Had a few good friends there but I was not really sorry to leave. Whoever said "Schooldays are the happiest days of you life." Must have been smoking something. Called in there once on one of my trips back. I think it is now a co-ed junior school. Wonder where everybody went? Dave
  10. Ay-up Chrissie! Welcome. Good old Netherfield. Grew up there on Hodgkinson Street through the fifties. Grandmother lived on Godfrey Street. Spent many happy hours being a pest among the allotments which used to be where the Colwick loop road now runs. Several family members worked at the locomotive shop which had been replaced by a MacDonalds the last time I was there in 97. In fact my wife and I sat in the Macs' drinking a coffee looking out at the shopping center which replaced my earlier haunts and commenting on how much it looked like the urban landscape of Canada. Dave
  11. Thanks Bip. I assume the good looking boxer is yours. As you say there are many trials and tribulations to dog ownership. But they are worth it. My Black Lab is now 9 years old but a great dog. Often call him loppylugs - among other less polite names. Real name is Solomon. Usually shortened to Sol. Dave
  12. Scary! I always like the Viva. Rented one for a trip to Scotland in 67. It was a nice car to drive and I hated to take it back to Swan. Now I'm glad I never bought one. The old Ford Pop lasted until I sold it to emigrate to Canada. Dave
  13. Yes I think he was into B & O in later years. Is the store still running? I would imagine if it is it would be run by another family member or something. I'm sure Pete would be getting about like all of us in these days. Dave
  14. Glad to be of help. Handford and Richards was upstairs. Can't remember what else was in the building. I think they mostly taught ballroom dancing but Friday nights was the hop when even if you had two left feet you could wander aimlessly round the room hoping to find some attractive wallflower. Mind you, the attractive ones were usually taken and thus not wallflowers. :-)
  15. Just posted on Hi-Fi in the 60s section now I found this. First system Roger's Cadet three running a couple of Wharfdale Super Lintons with a Garrard SP25 turntable. Soon traded the Garrard in for a Thorens TD150. Later added a V15 III Cartridge. I still have it and I still think it beats the pants off many of the CDs with their brittle sound. The Rogers amp died a few years ago and I presently use a Panasonic surround receiver for the TV. Haven't found anything to really touch the old Rogers though for shear purity of sound. Actually took the system to Canada where it worked well for m
  16. Does anyone remember Pete's Electronics on Arkwright street? Got my first stereo there in 1967. I was going to buy one of those stereograms, but Pete got me into some seperate stuff. Amp, turntable, speakers etc. Better sound and no more money. Last I heard he had moved to Bobber's Mill and become more upscale, "Peter Anson Electronics." Anyway he was a great guy and gave a fair deal and lots of free advice. BTW I'm not related to him. :-) It became a never ending pursuit of a more powerful amp, needing better speakers, which would mean a better tone arm and moving to a detached
  17. The "Bamboo" rings a bell. If I remember rightly it was a Beatnick type coffee bar. I was never actually in it. Just heard of it by reputation. Dave
  18. Hi. Just wondering did anyone here ever get to the Monday night dances at the YMCA on Shakespeare Street? I have read some of the other posts on different areas of the site re. Colemans and Handfords on Trinity walk. Hung out at both those places as well as the Palais on Wednesday nights. (Hey! it was about the only way I knew to meet girls at the time). Actually met my first wife there one Monday night in March or April 1963. Did something that was really not considered to be the best approach. Broke up two girls who were dancing together. Usually considered unwise as it was easier f
  19. Hi Guys Great stuff so many memories. My girlfriend's dad had a new Morris 1100 back in 63 which he used to let us take. I didn't have a car at that time just a bike. That was a young guys dream a great girlfriend and a new car as well. She used to say I only married her for the car. :-) Not quite true but it sure didn't hurt Went on my honeymoon in a red mini in 1965. Not a Riley elf though. Old red Morris mini from swan Self Drive on Nuthall Rd. Wonder if it's still there. Swan I mean not the car. Well Rob, you beat me on that Ford Pop. 53 eh? Mine was the old sit up and beg t
  20. Thanks for the greetings ya'll I remember Wallet street. Attended Chandos boys school 1956-1959. Left as soon as I could. :-) Worked at Ericssons/Plessey for about 8 months or so on an assembly line. I wanted an industrial electrical apprenticeship but did not pass their entrance exam. Not smart enough I guess. :-) So I baled out and went to work for Clarks in Netherfield. Did a five year apprenticeship there and never looked back. Got a masters ticket in Canada and had my own electrical contracting co. for quite a few years. Got smart later. :-) However Ericssons was fun. Lots o
  21. Hi! Thinking about my first car. Still have some slides of it. A '57 Ford Popular bought from a mate at the Electricity Board where I worked at the time. Paid fifteen pounds for it and patched up a bit of body rot. It ran great but was a bit unstable much above 45mph. Which was o-k because it wouldn't go much faster anyway. Had a sidevalve engine about 1000 c.c. Six volt electrical system and vacuum operated wipers. Lots of fun in pouring rain. harder you pressed the gas peddle the slower the wipers went. For some reason it made a very loud clunk if you applied the brakes hard, whic
  22. Yer' never know! Used to live just off Stockhill Lane for 3 years. Dave
  23. Hi From Georgia USA. Found this site while looking at Nottingham photos. Really enjoyed many of the posts about life in the 60s in Nottingham. Grew up in Netherfield. First job at Ericssons in Beeston and then on to electrical contracing until I moved to Canada in 1970. Lived there happily mostly in Alberta and became a Canadian citizen. My first wife died in 1999. Re-married an American lady (Long story :-) ) and moved down to the deep South. It helps to avoid -40 in the winters but I could live without the +100s and humidity in the summer. Last back to Nottingham in 1997. Last cent
