  1. I too remember the Skeggy children,s home. My brother Alan, and myself went twice. About '64 & '65. Personally, I loved it there. Apart from the liquidised carbolic soap that was used as shampoo. That REALLY stung the eyes. During the first visit, I took part in a 'shadow play'. (A back lit sheet) I was supposedly a patient having an operation. During which, strange objects were removed from my stomach, to comic effect. At one point I was to wake from the anesthetic and be clonked over the head with a wooden mallet. To ensure I was not hurt, I had to wear an old tin, 'Air Raid Warden,s'
  2. Sorry to be a pain in the arse. But, "I SPY FOR THE f.b.i." is by Jamo Thomas.
  3. The car showroom was, Trumans. Later of course, Frank Sytners. They once had the James Bond, Aston Martin DB6. Star of the film, "Golfinger",on display. Along with a couple of scantily clad models. Which, for us lads from "Hunto" was a real thrill. Both car, and models. The art teacher from the annexe. A Mr Parkin, went on to become a successfull artist in his own right. He did freelance work whilst teaching. Illustrations and the like. He was one of my favourite teachers. And I still use the skills he passed on to me in my work. I,m a signwriter/artist.
  4. Sorry about what at first appears a very late reply to your pics, but only just joined the forum. I have loads of great memories of the "Duke O Newc". My mam was the barmaid there for a number of years. Her name was Irene. Small ,blonde haired woman. She later divorced my dad, and married the barman, Chalkie. I was friends with Jim Flanagan, and his wife Margret. I spent many a night with a "lock in". Although, as I recall, there were a lot of hangers on, that seemed to get included when it was my shout. My wife was from just around the corner. (We met at the Nelson, by the flats.) We m

  9. I too occasionally went to The Bamboo. I was only about 14 at the time. One thing I do recall is the juke box in the upstairs section. At the time it was sixpence a go. Though I,ve no idea as to how many "plays" you got for that. But the two songs that always take me back there are, Hey Jude, The Beatles. And, Those were the days, Mary Hopkin. The reason being that, as the record being played reached the last few bars, someone would tilt the jukebox forward, causing the stylus to slide noisely to the begining, starting the track all over again. This was repeated untill someone d
  10. Hi there Fish ( ??? ) I too went to Elliot Durham. Moving there from Huntingdon St. It was brand new then. 1966 I believe. I was in class 4S2. The form teacher was a Mr Gordon, whom I recall being a bit of a snazzy dresser. And who was in some way connected to the "Beachcomber Club" near hockley. The head boy was a black guy called Vivien Oliver, who was in the same class. The deputy head boy, (Why did they need a deputy ? ) was a kid called Robert Wakelin. Also in my class, and the only one younger than myself. My brother Alan also went there, but I cannot recall his class number. But be
