I don't mind the Newton Building, although I can see the cold war connection.
Unsurprisingly, there's a very old thread specifically dedicated to it.

I've realised something else about these new maps which is really useful........they (almost) fill in the gaps which were left when the 'Old Maps' website stopped being open to everyone a few years ago.
You can now get detailed maps from the 50s - 60s etc.

I know the one you mean.
It just manages to get in on the earliest version of Streetview in 2008. https://maps.app.goo.gl/M14jmzbapPRDLP2m7 and The Queens can be seen on the left further up the road.

The building in Stuart C's picture has not been demolished (unless it happened in the last couple of days).
Where was the Crown Inn which you are thinking of ?
-
That building is currently occupied by - if I remember - solicitors and has recently been repainted externally.
It probably looks better now than it has done for a very long time.

Funny you should say that........I looked at the site a couple of days ago and realised it had changed.
Then I forgot to go back later and have a closer look, so I'll do that some time today.

For several reasons, it would be nice if @Dave Mills came back here and filled in the gaps of his missing photos.

I agree the HMRC place is pure 60s, and not in a good way. https://maps.app.goo.gl/CbQLhwZKTyvquyDL7
Also the Arena on Lower Parliament Street; it overpowers the road https://maps.app.goo.gl/fMxjfDUJ7FR4wmCf7
and it's clad in a material similar to the one used at the Cornerhouse in Trinity Square https://maps.app.goo.gl/AsVHHi9SfCW1DV7s9 which very quickly looks shabby and dirty.

Hair cut this morning in Bulwell.........
Was it a sensible reasonable price ? Some barbers, if I've glanced at their prices when walking past, are ridiculously expensive.

According to the BBC, Steve Cooper is now at the top of the list to be the new Leicester manager.

Finally something may be happening.....
radfordred has noticed a piece in the NEP announcing that the building is going to be restored - although don't hold your breath.

No 6 again this morning so no joy. I actually walked past the surgery this morning at half past 9, the waiting room was empty as usual.
If you start at No.6 are you then holding the line ? After maybe a minute the voice will say that you are now No. 4.......then after another minute it will say you are No. 2.
Is that what's happening ?

This came up somewhere else earlier today. It could've been too schmaltzy, but it stays on the right side.
And it's amazing how many people have fond memories of it.....in the comments.

Several people on other forums have said they've had their heating on this afternoon/evening.

No 6 in queue, can never understand why if I ring at 8 on the dot I end up there.
My GPs use a similar system, and I've rung exactly on starting time but I've never been higher than 6. But at least I've always got an appointment.
Mine are actually pretty good at handing out appointments; the system works pretty well.

That's nostalgic for a strange reason - a reminder of how the internet and websites looked 12-15 years ago. It's surprising how much web design has progressed and changed over such a short time.

In a new interview, Sunak is trying to demonstrate that he didn't have a privileged childhood because they didn't have Sky TV. An interesting set of priorities and standards.

And staying with Sky TV, Rupert Murdoch has got married again, at 93. It registers quite highly on the cynicism scale.

@Rachel Allen Unfortunately rexyrex has not logged in here since August 2014, so you may not get a reply....although I hope I'm proved wrong.

You could almost argue that a high number of recalls is a good thing. It indicates that the manufacturer will fix a potential problem before it happens, resulting in fewer on-road breakdowns.

It demonstrates that if you go to Youtube and Search your way through the works of Leroy Anderson, you can relive any childhood from the 50s and 60s.
I know because I've tried it.

As the winter temperatures continue, this morning I had to turn up the heating in the car.
Normally at this time of the year I expect it to be on zero for several months.

Definitely; I really dislike that place. It would look bad anywhere, but in that location it looks even worse than bad.
