  1. Thanks Stephen, that picture of the trolley bus was great! Brought back the smells, the sounds and the memory of always wanting to sit in that front seat on the left. Wasn't there a silver metal cover of some sort, like the top of a a gear box , in the middle of the front wall down at floor level? Can even hear the whine as they started off.
  2. Compo, One last question on Newton before I get bounced for going off thread. We kids went through the fence on the Newton airfield boundary along Shelford Road one day. There was a series of high grass embankments which you can still see on Google. We got to the top and saw men in white coats coming out of a door in the side of the embankment. Trouble was they saw us and started shouting. Through the fence and we didn't stop pedalling until we got to RoT. Told the old man and got a back hander for my troubles!! What was in those bunkers back then?????????????????
  3. Compo, didn't they have the Bloodhound missiles on permanent display outside Newton's main entrance? Seem to remember mates and me riding our bikes down that way a couple of times in the 50s.
  4. Was it Surf or Tide in and dirt out?? How did that ad go? Another washing powder (Omo?) had an advertising campaign where they used to go to various households and the lady of the house was all smiles and the house and washing gleaming white. The jingle used to say "Shining White... Street" Knew a girl fairly well in Wollaton whose mother had been in the ad. That one was "Shining Whitemoss Close". Apologies for going well off topic.
  5. Thanks folks. There may be many changes to the old town but what is evident on this website; the friendliness of the majority of people born and bred in Nottingham is still very evident!
  6. Don't remember the Saturday Club but you may well be right re 2 Way Family Favourites. It was for our armed forces in Germany etc as per mick2me post.
  7. Thanks Beefsteak....at least these and other pages are preparing the wife and I for a bloody big culture shock when we pay a visit after an absence (me) of nearly 48 years!
  8. Nice photo RGR but where have all the taxis gone?? Back in the late 50s, South Parade was two way, much wider with a taxi rank (Black Consuls, Zephyrs, Morris Oxfords, Wolseleys and the odd Peugot with cream/white bonnet and boot livery) extending at least half the length of Slab Square and taxis facing towards the Council House. Searched PTP and in 75, taxi rank still in place but taxis facing away from the CH. Now, in RGR photo, only trams. Do taxi ranks still exist in the town as we used to know them or have they disappeared like so much of the Nottingham of old?
  9. May I add another thread to this topic? Did anybody use to listen to Radio Luxembourg in the late 50s? Folks had an HMV valve radio back then and used to pick RL up of an evening. Bit scratchy but the only station back then that you could get the good music, apart from the Forces network requests on a Sunday morning which had some good tracks.
  10. Dead centre of photo is just about centre on body of snake; said body M'Lud is stretched out serpentine like from left to right. Please donate my pint to a deserving cause Compo.
  11. You are lucky in that regard then. It is Russian Roulette here at times when having to buy the go juice.
  12. Do you have fluctuating prices of fuel over there in England?? In Melbourne, we can have prices going up and down on a daily basis with some overnight hikes of up to 15cents per litre. Funny thing though, when the price rises and then dops back, it never drops back to the price level of the previous days. Two major supermarkets, Woolies and Coles own the major petrol outlets and give you 4cents a litre discount dockets if you buy your groceries, grog etc from them. Sometimes the discounts can be 8cents or more but, the groceries are normally priced higher than the previous week if that
  13. Much appreciated Stu...Tears of a Clown has provided some valuable finds and you have a great site that I still haven't fully explored. The more I delve into the family background and the Nottingham of old, the more I am amazed at the countless sites provided by others on my old town. Cheers mate.
  14. Melbourne petrol prices (ULP) have been around the $AUD145.9 per litre for the past fortnight, having nudged $AUD150.0 and expectations for $AUD 160.0 in the coming days. LPG is now $AUD80.0 per litre and Australia sells it overseas for a fraction of that! Diesel is nearly always higher than petrol, by about 5-10 cents; even though it is a byproduct of petrol. Go country and the petrol prices rise accordingly with some of the more remote places at $AUD185.9 - 200.0. All our Government can say is that we would be paying $2 a litre if our dollar was back at its parity level of 79 cents t
  15. That was it......thanks katyjay
  16. Found this on the Tears of a Clown site and thought it would be of interest. There are some interpretations that are hilarious, some I have not heard of and I seem to remember that 'let's have a guzgog' was 'let's have a look?' A Guide to Nottingham English For those not necessarily of a Nottingham persuasion, here’s a fail-safe guide to survival to help you through a stay in the Lace City. It’s not comprehensive or fool-proof and please note that important tasks such as ordering a pint etc. can be performed quite adequately by pointing, talking loudly and s-l-o-w-l-y. With help from
  17. Thanks loppylugs. It is so true what you, Michael Booth and piggy and babs say about recording one's history before it is lost. When we are young, we know better and are out for a good time and are just not interested in how our parents had to work hard to feed and clothe us or what they had to put up with. When we get older, we are too busy raising our own families and when they are teenagers, most are disbelieving buggers and are not interested in our past; only today. A common thread begins to show. It appears to be It is only when we progress to senior citizens do many of us
  18. piggy and babs, I will speak to her asap about your post and get back to you.
  19. Thanks Beefsteak but she would not have a computer in a fit. As for pushing her, her last words on the phone were 'ask me any thing about the time I was in Nottingham and if I can remember, I will tell you". I am sending her print outs of her old haunts, Woolpack Lane, The Hermitage, Holme Road, school, etc so that should generate something. I will post anything of interest that I learn.
  20. Since joining Nottstalgia some weeks ago, it has afforded an insight into life in Nottingham as my parents and rellies knew it. My only surviving rellie is Aunt Jean (nee Reaville), 86 years young, who lives in Sydney. She, my mother, two other sisters and a brother were raised by my Gran single handed after her husband left her early in the piece. Jean is as sharp as a tack and clearly remembers life at 22 Woolpack Lane, then 7 The Hermitage before the family moved to 8 Holme Road in West Bridgeford. On the phone last night, we were talking about the war years and she told how she fin
  21. Thanks Compo. You may be interested in the site below. It has a lot on RAF Newton including the fact that they are considering turning it into an Eco Town!!!! http://www.airfieldinformationexchange.org Then follow the threads 'East Midlands' airfields.........'Nottinghamshire'.......'RAF Newton'.
  22. Morning all, Anybody remember when Skills (single and double deckers) ran a public service from RoT to Nottingham back in the 50s. Not sure of their other routes (if any) but the RoT route extended along Shelford Road to the top of Shelford Hill. Another service back then was the Gashes that ran along the A52 to Newark? Have searched for old pics or stories of these services but have not found anything....anybody help me please?
