  1. Welcome to Nottstalgia Russell !

I live in Mapperley Park and although I've never had to drive to Keyworth in the mornings I would think it would be a fairly easy commute as you'll be going away from town rather than with the masses driving into the city. I don't think that Nottingham traffic is particularly bad and the public transport is really good but not ideal for the route you need to take.

  2. Thanks David for the info but I think we need someone a lot braver than we are to tackle this job! They're a busy lot but hopefully they're just focused on the Queen Bee. At our previous house we had wasp nests under the roof tiles every year and they would come into the house through bedroom windows. Each year we had the Council round to get rid of them but I'd always wait a few weeks after seeing the first nest so the man had a few to deal with on the one visit. One year we had 5 nests, all under the tiles.

  3. Before we went away on holiday at the end of March we had Blue Tits in a nesting box fixed to a tree in our garden. When we returned home at the end of April instead of baby birds the nest box is home to hundreds of Tree Bumblebees. We've been thinking they were wasps as they're swarming around the entrance to the box but we caught one in a very long-handled net today and have identified what they are on the Internet. They're of no use to bee keepers as they do not produce honey and it appears that they are aggressive and can give multiple stings. This species is relatively new to the UK, only having been spotted here for the past 10 or so years. Any suggestions what we should do? The tree is really close to our pond and from past experience I know that the stuff that council pest control people use on wasp nests is dangerous to pond life.

  4. Sadly most people who buy birthday and Christmas cards just haven't taken it on board that if the card is not a regular size or has embellishments on it then it will cost more to post. It's stated on the back of the cards if they need the extra postage. I always check now because I've had too many trips down to the sorting office to pay the extra £1.20 to collect greetings cards. When I was buying Christmas cards last year I opened up the packets to check what it said on the back of the cards. I'm blowed if I'm going to put a stamp costing almost £1 on a Christmas card!

  5. We used methylated spirits on cotton wool to suffocate the tick on our dog's ear. Lost it's grip and came clean out. Interesting though Ayeupmeducks, it's easier to find washing-up liquid than meths. Years ago we were on a mini Safari in South Africa and then arrived at a very nice 5 star hotel in Jo'burg. I was so hot and sweaty so I pulled my t shirt off as soon as we got into our room and a tick was inside my shirt. Thank goodness it had never attached itself to me, even though several hours had passed.

  6. We've got a really good postman but he does seem to be on holiday a lot and the relief postman delivers anytime in the afternoon. If I can have a moan though, I posted a birthday card First Class to my son last Thursday, 1st May, for his birthday on 6th May. It hadn't arrived in Hertfordshire by Saturday 3rd so I may as well not have bothered seeing as he flew out of the country on business on Monday 5th (Bank Holiday). Wonder if it's got to his home yet?

  7. I was watching two feeds today. The first at about 4pm when Dad concentrated on the 3 bigger babies and I was talking to him, willing him to notice the 4 (smallest one) He must have heard me because he then spent time feeding the little guy. Then at around 8pm and supper time, this time only two were fed with the other two giving up begging and snuggled down. This afternoon I noticed a lot of pigeon feathers on our lawn and was wondering if the falcons had come over searching for food, we're less than 2 miles from the city centre.

  8. I've just been googling, as you do on a fine Sunday morning. I've found a few pictures of a similar contraption on ''Sideways Bike - Original'. It's at the bottom of the page, along with newspaper headlines about it. There's a chap riding one, he's wearing a denim shirt, and the bike has full size wheels. Not sure if it's the same one because as I said earlier, he whizzed past us we didn't get a real good look (but the man looked very much like the one in the photo. Sorry, I don't know how to put links on here.

  9. I think Nottingham has got rental bikes around the city now. I've hired them in Miami Beach a few times, over there they're called Deco Bikes and there are racks everywhere and as you say Rog, a debit or credit card is used to pay. Bilboro-lad has a point regarding helmets though. In Florida and maybe throughout the States it's not the law to wear a helmet even on a motorcycle so it never even crossed our minds about wearing a cycle helmet, mind you I have usually ridden on the pavement !!

  10. Now then Rog (Plantfit) have you ever come across a bicycle that is ridden sidesaddle? We saw a guy riding one the other week while we were in Miami. If I hadn't been so amazed at what I'd seen I might have had time to take a photo of him, he was certainly enjoying the attention he was getting from everyone he rode past.

  11. Carni, sorry I'm a bit late here wishing you all the best but I truly hope that the docs can fix your problem very soon as it must be scary for you every time it happens. Best wishes girl and congratulations on reaching another milestone!
