  1. Its good that your wife is getting the support she needs at this very difficult time Michael. This last post from you reminded me that our warden at last years site had also had cancer, from which she had made a full recovery. As a result of this We had a collection tin for Maggies, a cancer support unit on the Nottingham City campus. I'm sure you have been given the information. Jan used to speak very highly of them as they offer support to all the family of the cancer patients as well as the patients themselves. It's a drop in centre Here's the link for anyone who may be interested or nee
  2. Thought about slugs, compo but they were never touched when they were in our compound and there are very few about, not even any trails to be seen and in places the whole plant has been removed. Probably more like the muntjacs that we have in proliferation around here. They were not touched last night after I covered them with the hanging baskets. I shall persevere and see if we can get some plants established somehow, besides rhododendron which is as prolific as the muntjacs!!!
  3. Well the bikes never came out today as for some reason rain was forecast for around 3.00pm....which never materialised either! However after a visit to the garden centre (which is not recorded as I forgot to put on my fitbit) we decided to risk the forecast and walked to Sandringham house. We left at 1.00pm and have just got back to the site, having walked around the house, gardens, museum and church (I'll detail it more in Hows Your day) I now have 12194 steps recorded (It was reading 742 when we left) with more steps to be done as we're off to the pub later. Rog, 8548 is very respectable a
  4. Exercise gets you like that Carni, I think you become addicted to it. I now need to go out, not because I want to get the steps in, but because I enjoy the exercise, and it's half the battle won if you enjoy it as it is no longer a chore but a pleasure. Of course the knowledge that it is improving your health is an added bonus Well done on your steps. We're off out on the bikes today, but have no way of checking speed or distance so I shall just enjoy it for a bike ride knowing that I am getting the exercise in a different form. Have a great day all pedometrists
  5. Well disaster struck in the form of pigeons I think, with most of the plants being eaten away. There is a tiny bit of lemon balm, two foxgloves and very little else left A couple of days ago we had a delivery (including our new water butt and rainwater diverter) and managed to talk the driver out of a pallet to add to the insect hotel. Yesterday I found a dead pigeon at the back of the "hotel" stuck underneath it, probably got stuck trying to steal some of the filling....serve him right for eating the plants. A wildlife haven is all very well as long as it attracts the right sort of wildli
  6. As well as the per normal cleaning duties, did cobwebbing around the top block eaves and then sweeping up around the block. Nice tidy block now for one day, I expect the webs will all be back tomorrow!! Then a bit more to the Wildlife Haven, covered all remaining plants in upside down, unused hanging baskets in hope of protecting what's left. More about all that on the actual thread. Total steps tonight 8790. Day off tomorrow, so we're off to Holkham Hall again but to cycle to Wells this time, will be interested to see what the fitbit records, I may well be joining in Carnis experimentations
  7. Thanks for the walk tip, Rog, will look into that one. A visit to Hunstanton and you didn't call in to Sandringham Caravan Club to say hello....we really can't keep nearly meeting like this Rog Contracts came today for our house sale so things should be moving soon....hopefully our things!!! Office day today, but a bit of chasing up some members for pitch payments, and a spot of work on the Wildlife Haven, which included removing a dead pigeon which seemed to have got itself stuck in the insect hotel, (probably because it was too fat having eaten all my plants!!!!) has brought my total to
  8. Back to 4th June for me. sorry for the delay, a bit of excitement for us when a completion date for 15th June mentioned by our buyers solicitor, which was odd as they are still asking questions and doing searches!!! Then reality kicked in that it wasn't going to happen, possibly their buyers are starting to put the pressure on, though not a problem for us as we can move out anytime and pop our stuff into storage as we are living in the 'van at the moment. Perhaps the end of the month is more practical, we shall see. In the meantime Thursday was an office day for me, and though I managed to g
  9. Rog the Bluebell is going to almost be our local soon, hopefully moving to New York when the solicitors get their acts together.
  10. Time to get out the brewing kits folks. Elderflower is just coming into its own now, and looks like it's going to be a bumper year. Yesterday I collected enough to make a double batch of Elderflower Cordial, but there is still plenty still in the bud stage, so maybe get another batch made next time we're home. Don't forget to collect it at around mid day when the sun is shining and the heads are dry, the pollen will be at its most potent ensuring a good flavour. You only need 20 heads for a batch so don't take too much, leave it for the berries to mature. Another tip is not to wash or shake
  11. Well not sure whether this should be in hows your day, but here is probably more relevant. Yesterday saw us shopping in Lincoln and then a visit to the house we are hoping to move into in the near future, and then a pub meal at a lovely pub in the village of Tattershall Thorpe, The Bluebell. Last nights total steps were 7984. Today we have been shopping in Newark (groceries this time....clothes and shoes yesterday). Also got some citric acid as I notice the elderflower is on the bloom and wanted to get the cordial made. So, after lunch and a visit from my daughter Sam and grandson Alex I wen
  12. It will be an interesting experiment Carni
  13. Wonder if they have flown now? No sign of any falcons this morning.
  14. Carni, had a look on my fitbit page and it seems the fitbit you require is the Fitbit Surge, quite pricey but will cover everything you want. https://www.fitbit.com/uk/surge
  15. Welcome to Nottstalgia Serrie. Used to work in the Playhouse bar, late 70's.
  16. Well no treadmill for me tonight folks, after loo cleaning duties and then a good hour spent working on my wildlife area starting the construction of the insect hotel, putting in the ponds and planting just about anything I could lay my hands on that rabbits hopefully won't eat, then getting ready to come home, and unpacking when we got here (an hour ago) I have a grand total of 9183....now that's more like it It is lovely walking through the woods Carni. I have watched the season change too, At first it was just brown, leafless trees and dead bracken, but now the trees are wearing their sum
  17. Well a bit further on with the wildlife garden. Cleared quite a few nettle roots last week and positioned the bin lid pond, but just felt it was not quite right. Today got some plants into the ground, lemon balm, lavender, foxgloves and lupins brought from home, and also transplanted some forget me nots and, I think, pink campions which were growing among the rhododendrons. Also got some sunflowers in which I had grown from seed and then scattered a box of butterfly and bee flower seeds all over, with the idea of just weeding out nettles until I know what is growing there...that is as long as
  18. Well done for getting round Rutland water Carni. Used to visit there quite a lot before we starting working for the Caravan Club....used to stay at Greetham. We usually parked up at the water sports centre and walked to the visitor centre, but the last time we went we took the bikes. Parked at the leisure centre then just biked to Normanton Church and back, that seemed a long way to me at the time, though total trip was only 7 miles so I take my hat off to you Back to my efforts for today and as it was another busy office bound day I gave my steps a boost by doing a double circuit round the
  19. Happy birthday Karlton, Have a great day
  20. Looks like they're about ready for take off. Not long now before they take to the skies.
  21. Better day today, the loo cleaning round and then even more cleaning....scrubbing the shower floors!!! I get all the best jobs here!! Oh well it earned me 6414 steps. Well done with yours Carni and not bad going Rog to be halfway up the charts for the first year. I am also on a league table with fitbit with the diabetes group, there are 45 of us and I am generally around 12th, with an average of 7000 steps, though it has fallen a bit this week, but hopefully get back up to steam next week now the site is a bit quieter. So onwards and upwards steppers, lets keep this thread going.
  22. Woohoo Rog, well done! Don't think I'll put a photo of todays measly office bound steps of 3236 ....mind you my mind has been doing Olympic gymnastics so perhaps that will help today
  23. Good news Michael. Stay strong knowing that you are both in all our thoughts.
  24. I know Compo, but it's where to site them. We shall start small and see how things go with this one. We are also considering a wormery, though just for the staff I think....it would be overkill for all the site to contribute, quite literally. The aim with the compost bin is to produce enough compost for the planters and hanging baskets on site.
  25. It must be so hard for you both keeping a brave face on all of this Michael, and I guess it just got too much for your wife last night. You are both on an emotional roller coaster and there comes a time when it is better to let all the fear and sadness come out. Your wife's grief last night may bring some relief for you both in some way, and hopefully you will talk about it all soon. In the meantime I hope all goes well and that the extra blood test is a positive sign for you both. As always the very best of wishes and blessings to you both.
