  1. Is there a way of finding out if someone married after the 1911 census other than keep guessing and paying for marriage certificates? Got the death certificate today for the elusive Mary Harvey (my G Grandmother) and it is the wrong one. The number of single Mary Harveys is running out and I just had the thought that she may have married after the 1911 census. She might even have married the father of the 8 kids she gave her own name to. I have no idea what her married name might be if she did marry £9.25 per certificate to find it is wrong is no joke - it would be nice if you could see
  2. I can't help with any pictures of the Grange yet but I remember it very well as a ruin. I live on the estate in Eastwood adjacent to it, (often wrongly called Newthorpe Grange Estate). The Grange was eventually demolished to make way for Thorntree Gardens - a sort of annex to the estate that I am on (lived ere since 1959). Grange Cottage which also stood abandoned for many years still survives and had been converted into a respectable home. The people that own and live in it have incorrectly titled the property 'The Grange' - but it isn't - it is Grange Cottage. I remember the Grange quite wel
  3. Thanks for inquiring anyway but I suppose it was a long shot. Sometime before 1911 they had moved to Blackstone Street which I believe was pretty well across the road. The more I find, the more turns up. My fathers mother had a previous short lived marriage, it must have been bad as she was divorced in no time at all which I don't think was normal in 1916-18 sort of period. My father had a half brother as a result of this. She would have lived on Derwent Street at the time. Her first married name was Prince. According to the 1901 census, the people living at no 23 Queens Grove were named Princ
  4. The newspaper they were served in helped the flavour too
  5. Was doing some family history research some months ago and this took me to Flintham and Kneeton churchyards to find Harvey graves. I wasn't disappointed as I found some in each. However, while I was in Kneeton churchyard there was a man mowing the grass, he asked me who I was looking for, I told him 'Harvey' and he pointed out that the fields across the back of Kneeton church were known as Harvey's Fields. I wonder if anyone can shed any light on who this Harvey was and why it is known as Harvey's fields. The vast majority of my Harvey ancestry throughout the 1800's were involved in farming an
  6. Yes. Found similar info on 1891 census. George Harvey is the Mary I am looking for info on's younger brother. Mary above is his wife with sons Harold, Edward and daughter Winifred.. They were living at 3 Collingham Terrace, St. Mary, in 1891
  7. Done a bit more poking around. This George Harvey is the younger brother of the Mary Harvey (b.1864 ) that I am looking for info. on. His wife Mary, that you have found the obituary for is not a blood relative but the wife of George. He has the eldest son Harold (newsagent) that you have found. On the 1891 census they were living at 3, Collingham Terrace, St. Mary.
  8. This Mr Harvey is my G G Grandfather Edward and his wife Anne (The mysterious Mary's parents) Edward was the Farm Bailiff whatever one of them did. I have no idea who George Harvey is on the 1901 census, at this address - probably no relation at all. They were still at Shortwood Farm in 1911. Edward aged 73 and his wife Anne aged 77. By 1909 they probably needed a bit of help hence the ad. Why the Stamford Mercury I have no idea.
  9. Ok I shall save the military bit for later. I am going to wait for Mary Harvey's birth cert before I do much more.
  10. No I haven't but it is a good idea. I have just done the basic search for the details on Findmypast. and the most likely one to be correct is an unnamed Harvey in 1888. It just gets worse. I shall send for his Birth cert in due course. BTW I have had a look at your website. Do you charge for searches on there or do you do it for a hobby?
  11. No they don't. Mary Harvey and son Ernest are not to be found on the 1891 census :-(
  12. Thanks. I had seen that one. I have found this on the 1891 census. Shorwood Farm (no T spelling mistake on census?) is clearly marked as Watnall Road Hucknall Torkard
  13. Please ignore what I said about Bulwell workhouse. Findmypast website was down and I was working from memory. Its Highbury Road Workhouse and there was a Mary in there of the right age but claimed to be married. That I suppose could be another lie.
  14. Thank you. Unfortunately I cannot see all of the ancestry.com as I am not subscribed. However, I have a George Harvey b. 1867 at Kneeton. He was the younger brother of the Mary I am looking for who was b. Flintham 1864. Info on 1871 census family living at Kneeton at the time. Father of both; Edward Harvey b. 1838/9 at Newark. Also perhaps I should mention I am unable to find my Mary (b.1864) and her eldest son Ernest (b.1888) on the 1891 census. Nearest I can find is Mary b. 1854 and her son Ernest b. 1888 in Bulwell workhouse. Might she have lied about her age to get in there or could this
  15. No I have not discounted this Mary Harvey as I think it is quite likely a relative but not a direct line back. I shall wait and see what her death certificate reveals.
  16. I have him as being born 1840. It looks like he was Mary's uncle John. It seems that the whole Harvey family in the 1800's were involved with farming in some shape or form.
  17. By 1911 census Mary Harvey had moved to Blackstone Street, Meadows, so she probably won't remember, unless a reputation lived on :-) The 1891 census tells me that there was another Mary Harvey 10 years older lived at number 6 Queens Grove, which I guess would be across the road. It may be the same Mary Harvey if lies have been told. Both Mary Harvey's had an eldest son named Ernest, but Mary Harvey at No. 6 claims to have been married which mine wasn't. A little bit of Queens Grove still exists. It leads down to the brewery.
  18. Well there you go! My grandfather was born next door but two at number 21 in 1894. You don't happen to remember the neighbours do you?
  19. Is there or has there ever been a Shorwood Farm on Watnall Road Hucknall? Surely it is ShorTwood Farm. There is a Shortwood Road
  20. Thanks. had a quick look at all this. Flintham isn't a very big place so I guess there must be connections somewhere. I have a George Harvey b. 1867 at Kneeton and his sister Sarah J Harvey b. 1868 at Kneeton They are offsprings of Edward Harvey b. 1838 Flintham and his wife Ann b. 1835 at Kneeton. Maiden name not known. The only connection I know of with Coopers is that my Grandfather Edward Harvey b. 1894 21 Queens Grove Nottm (but at time of marriage lived at 9 Blackstone Street) married Florence Rose Prince (nee Cooper) in 1919. It was her second marriage. There is a slight coincidence he
  21. Oh dear. I have just been on FindMyPast and searched later deaths. There was a Mary Harvey aged 80 died first quarter 1945 and another died 1948 last quarter aged 84, both Nottingham City. My Mary Harvey was born 1864 so either of those could be correct also. My father (b. 1928) never talked about his grandparents so I really am in the dark here.
  22. Thanks for confirming typo. I puzzled now as to why the Mary Harvey you have found is a widow. as on the 1901 and 1911 censuses she is an unmarried mum of 8
  23. Yes that is the death certificate that I have ordered and yes there was only one Mary Harvey died in 1923 in Nottingham. BUT. If the one David has found is the same person she must have married George Harvey AFTER 1911 (census). I suppose it is possible that she could have married someone with the same surname. She is listed on the 1901 and 1911 censuses as Mary Harvey, head of family and single, not widowed. She was born Mary Harvey in 1864. I think there is a puzzle here that won't be answered until I get the death certificate.
  24. Someone probably misread my original post. My Mary Harvey died 1923 not 1823. She was 59 when she died born 1864
  25. Thanks. Death certificate ordered. I am trying to do what I can without having to pay :-)
