I wonder what will happen to the branch at Clifton.  https://goo.gl/maps/oMGEyjiZMW9zzojG6

These days it's only a single storey shop, but back in the 1960s it was a Co-Op and operated on both floors. Access to the upper floor was via a staircase which was a bit like a miniature version of the one everyone remembers at the big Co-Op on Parliament Street.

I recall the Coop on Southchurch drive and the upstairs being referred to as

    ''Scoop''..........can't remember why.....can you CT?

  2. Just read in todays paper that Shops selling Persil are keeping it under lock and Key.........at £15 per pack who can blame them....

When self-service stores were really taking off..early 60s...we at Farrands/Marsdens..........decided the only item we couldn't put on open display was ''Chatka Crab'' at 6/6  (about 30 pence)........how times have changed hey......

  3. Still think Bulwell branch would make a great ''INDOOR Market'''........equally sure it would attract customers from further afield.......Lots of potential customers who love a bargain and lots of people who would like to set up their own ''Flea Market'' type stall..........What better place than Bulwell with its 'Free Parking'' trams...Trains...and Buses.......

They could also make it a ''Cash only'' site.....leading the way for the rest of the country........LOL............

  4.  I was a great fan of Ricky Nelson in the early 60s..........used to go to a youth club on George street.......''Coop Arts Centre'' i think it was...ran by Mrs Pettit off Bestwood estate.......lovely lady who took 'no prisoners' when it came to 'Teenage Behaviour''........threatened to 'Bar me'' and tell me Mam when caught 'Kissing'' Sandra on the 'Fire Escape ''..(loved that fire escape)...Mr Pettit ran the football team called ''Coop Pathfinders''..and always got us a good deal on new Boots.......

Went to the Coop youth club for a year or so.......all or most of the Lads and girls from school days went their on Tuesday nights mainly for the great sounds of the 60s and Sandra's for a dance or two...

However it was all replaced eventually by ''TeenBeat'' at the Locarno just down the road......where i fell in love every week with a different Sandra on the ''Undulating''  Dance floor........listening to Ricky...Cliff...Billy ...and many others

  5. I used to 'Train' Store Detectives;;.....and the rules on 'Stopping'' someone for Shoplifting were as follows......

1/.......See the suspect enter the store and approach the item...

    2/......Select the Item......

    3/....conceal the item...

4/....Leave the store......having made no attempt to pay for the item...and you must never have lost sight of the suspect...

Only then were you allowed to detain the suspect.........using minimal force.....

If all the above circumstances were followed...there is no need to search...and you must leave that to the Police.......

If all these 'Rules' are followed....you will never have   what is Termed as a ''wrong stop''.....

So yes Jill.....your assumptions...and your friends are all perfectly correct.........

  6. One thing i am totally against is being stopped in a store and asked to produce proof of purchase......

To my mind ive paid and no one as the right to question this.......if i am stopped at any time in the future i will refuse to cooperate.......im sure i am in my legal rights.........what do you think ?

  7. IT can't always i know.......but Shoplifting...Did have its funny side.......i could write a book about so many funny incidents back in the day.......

Easy to see the bad side....and i saw many of those involving violence........but i like to remember the funny times.......

I know that a few on here will never see the humour in shoplfting....but believe me not many days went by without a good laugh....

Like the day in a Coop in West Bridgford........saw a chap put a bottle of 'Whisky'' inside his jacket......stopped him just outside the door and asked him to return with me.........he became very '' verbal'' and started shouting...at which his teeth fell-out......we both bent down to retrieve them..banging our heads at the same time........at which the 'Whisky'' fell from his jacket..smashing on the floor......both finished up laughing.....couldn't get the Police because it was so funny...got him to pay for it and banned him from the store..........as he left he asked what about Coop House?........:biggrin:.

  8. Not so much pIsmronunciation.......but more 'Soundcomunication''.........with my voice now being more of a Growl........two assistants in Morrisons stood with their back to me.....all i said was ''EXCUSE ME''....Both jumped out of their skin and exclaimed...''Bloody Hell''...........or words to that affect...LOL....

                Well it was Bulwell.......:)

Even by current standards, that's stupid.....unless it was at least 2ft long with half a pig inside.

Yes Kev £7.90 for a Bacon Cob.......i recall when you could fill your car up for that...and travel down there and back........Rutland is not the far south but its certainly different in many ways from up here......not only prices but people as well...........

I lived down that way for a few years and made some good friends...but it always felt very different..........even yesterday the old ''Feeling'' of 'Different hit me as soon as i stepped out of the car in my sons new village....can.t explain it.........Probably because i was brought up on a Northern  ish Council estate and my roots and thoughts will forever be there....

When i used to travel back up to Notts crossing the Trent always made me feel better....whether it was Gunthorpe...West Bridgford or Clifton.........and yesterday crossing at Clifton bridge....i gave a little 'cheer'  my Southern Wife thought i had gone mad.......

The only things missing back in Notts now are the sight and  smell of smoke.......to say nowt....of ''Ey-up Duck'' where YO bin''...from Mam and Dad...........

  12. Magic day today......furthest ive driven for over 5 years....been to Rutland Water....to see one of my Sons new house.which is near-by....even had a longish walk around it (the Water not the house) to the half submerged old Church.......which back in the 70s i used to take 3 of my sons biking round it (the water not the church.lol )..when we lived down there........

His house is lovely and he was well pleased to see us....made us right welcome.....

Mind you the further South you go the more expensive everything seems to be........Went to a Garden Centre where i fancied a 'Bacon Cob'' (which they called a 'Bacon Butty)...but at £7.90.....i declined..........then nearly purchased 2 four foot wooden Trellis......again i fought the urge to spend £35...so i'll get the same locally for about half the price....

Just one other little thing ''SAT-NAVS''......Followed its instructions going down there......because it was a small Village i'd never been to......took just over 2 hours........

Coming back was 90 minutes....just followed my instinct as we did in the olden days......

Anyway apart from my little moans ...thoroughly enjoyed the day...:)

  13. Oh nearly forgot.......Daughter just Texted' to remind me.....its 5 years today since my ''Laryngetomee''.....it lasted between 10 and 12 hours at the Derby Royal''......and am forever indebted to them for basically saving my life......

The last 5 years have flown past....as well as 'Derby Royal'' i need to thank my loving wife and family for helping me adapt to my new way of life...

Not forgetting all the kind people on here..who without doubt helped me through it all....

My life is completly different now from 5 years since........at the time i never imagined there could be so many changes......still not been further than Derby...but hopefully that changes later this week when i visit one of my Son's and family some 50 miles south......

Won't 'Wax-on'' anymore......just to say thanks again everyone for all your kind words over the years........

  14. Forgot it was a ''Bank holiday'' today....only realised when on getting into Bulwell early 9am ish.......so a few of my regular shops that i visit were not open.or opening later......

However this did not spoil my visit.....the 'Lighthouse'' charity shop was open early....and while browsing spotted 2 Guitars that looked the real thing only slightly smaller and with no strings.......So ten and seven year old Grandsons will be pleased when they next visit......Lady who served me enjoyed it when i told her i'm making a come-back with the '''Bulwell Bog siders''.....

Lovely day today.......with having sons pretty well spread around different parts of the World for much of the time...today was special...3 of them came for dinner and they hadn't seen each other for several months........plus a niece and her husband from Cambridgshire......a day to remember as they all enlightened each other of their travels........

One came on a large Motor-bike...he had just bought....ive often contemplated buying one for my old age......but after sitting astride it while the son gave it a kick start.......changed my mind...just the noise frit'' me to death........just nice to know..''there used to be days like this'' many years since....with a lucky girl riding Pillion.........
