  1. Also remember the strippers and the topless barmaids one of whom was old enough to be my Grandmother (this was in 1972), The best stripper was Gypsy Rose Lee, not that I was a regular..................

DO you remember Sharon the Tassle dancer?...a very good friend of mine.............happy days,

  2. Prior to it being Russels, The clinton arms was run by Chrissie Bliss, and featured strip shows. I remember Chrissie sitting on a chair near the door sticking her legs out to trip people up who walked in without paying.

Chrissie took over the pub bottom of carlton road, opposite the park (Duke of Newcastle?) where there were topless barmaids in the 90's

I KNEW Chrissie,a very formidable lady,.........she offered my wife £11 per hour back in 86 to be barmaid at the 'Duke' she declined the offer,i was a bit upset as we were skint at the time........

  4. Did'nt watch 'Winstones' funeral, i was managing Marsdens shop on lower Parliament st and we closed for 5 mins at 11am,makes me feel old to think it was 50 yrs ago.

The thing i remember about that shop was the rounded front, and i believe the buildings there today still have the same style,it used to back on to the Sneinton fruit/veg market opposite the 'ice stadium' and a little higher up.

  5. Just chatting about some one with Hubbs (No it wasn't You) and just out of the blue, I remarked "Well He/She can please his fat ant (Aunt)"

I haven't heard that one for "Donkeys Years". There's another one. Why Donkeys Years. Whats wrong with ordinary years? It just makes you wonder what's locked away in the back of the mind.

Does any one know the origen of both sayings? Both often used by my Mam!

    Hence,..........Yonks,

  6. CERTAINLY after the War 'Churchill' was not loved by the working classes of Notts,i think it was 1950 general election when i as a 5 yr old along with about 50 others were running behind a 'Labour party van' that was urging the locals to vote, and as we passed the house of a Conservative voter with picture of Winston in his window we all booed'

Obviously as a 5 yr old did'nt really know why, except we must have heard our parents comments on the Conservatives. How times have changed, now we should boo the lot of em,

I think 'Churchill' was a great war leader, but after he was not for the working classes.

  7. Were "Notts County Rovers" anything to do with Notts County ???

Did a newspaper search for Mabbott and Notts County and this Notts County Rovers keeps coming up .

Here's part of a report from 1892 in which N. County Rovers beat Grantham 16-0 in the short lived Midland Alliance League !!

    J.Mabbott scored a number of times as did a C. Mabbott ..

Thats fascinating David, ive always been interested in local football and its history and never heard of this, certainly looks like it could have been some of the reserve sides, names like Strollers and Swifts, which Rugby teams use nowadays must have been an inovation back then,
