Another gesture that I thought had gone out of fashion, amongst the young, is holding a shop door open for the person following them in. This week in town I’ve been pleased to report numerous young folk have held the door open for me.I always hold the door open for folk......young or old male or female........odd times don't even get a thank-you............but mostly a nice smile........
Mind you i once held the door open fo a little old man.......he wasn't looking and FELL straight in.....i did help him up when i'd finished laughing.......

Had a great result this morning,,,been looking and making comments on ''Nottingham way back when''........at troggs instigation,,,
Well you all know of my love of Marsdens/Farrands days which i always go on about,,,i always knew that they joined up in the 50s but didnt really know much about their History............Anyway the great grand daughter of Frank Farrand contacted me thru NWBW this morning,,and filled me in as to Farrands beginnings...............First shop 1850s on Fishergate,,,plus Fulforth street opened in 1870...........she gave me other snippets about them too,,,
She made my day,,
Just stumbled across an article about Marsdens.......ive always wondered when they began.......
Turns out JD Marsden....opened his 1st store in 1880...on Woodborough rd......and after 11 years had 8 more around Nottingham..........in the end Marsdens had over 80 stores all around our fair City and i was privileged to work in the majority of them throughout the 1960s........

I know lets make a video of Bulwell that makes it look like the worst place on Earth.........
Pick a day when its raining.....
Pick a time or day when there is hardly anyone about...
Make sure its when most of the shops are shut for the day...so it looks as if theyv'e closed down...
Make sure there is no market...and just show empty stalls......
Disgusting............

An old classmate from High Pavement sent me this link to a YouTube video of scenes from HP in the 1960s.
I think they are after 1965 when I left. They mostly show boys and staff around school on the Bestwood Estate site.

Brilliant video Col..................I lived on Bestwood est but didnt go to High Pavement......didnt fail the exam just didnt take it.......might have failed who knows.........
Anyway the site on this film has so many special memories for me............Especially if you go to 2min 37 seconds..............where you can see my original classes IE...the Wooden Huts.... i was there in 1950 a few years (6 i think) before High Pavement was built.......reckon the Huts lasted several years in the High Pavement grounds.......its made my day seeing those old Huts.....Mrs Taylor was my 1st Teacher in Hut one...........

How things have changed.............imagine a 6 year old treking with just other kids doing that today.....and being Politcal enough to 'boo'...The great 'Churchill''......think as daft as it sounds we understood a little too..........
-
First General election i recall was 1951..........Bestwood and Bulwell were very working class....and i recall the Conservatives (Winston Churchill).........getting back in power..........i was only 6 but along with probably 50 other kids..remember walking along Leybourne drive behind a Labour Van which was reminding people to Vote.........A house on Leybourne at the top of Hove road was sporting a large Picture of Winston...this was very rare for Bestwood and was met with much 'Booing'....The occupant was a Manager where my mother worked at Pearsons lace factory in Basford.......funny how i can recall all the above from being only 6.........
What i could'nt recall so looked it up....was the Conservative Majority of 17 seats and a turnout of 82%.........Highest ever i believe...

But moving to secondary school, it was all surname with no mention of first names.
Same here Kev..........even starting work at 15 in retail.....everyone was addressed by their surname.(bit like 'ARE YOU BEING SERVED)... ........ football and cricket clubs i played for at school and thru my Teenage years ...it was always surnames.....which somehow i respected more...
