Thanks Merthyr Imp, I watched Spurs v Liverpool at the weekend, I did not see much evidence of a crackdown as the antics at corners was blatant and could not possibly have been missed by the ref.

Good one Fly, Derby 18th five points from five games. We get one live free to air EPL game each weekend, first time for years. Watched the first three games of the new season. Can any football expert on here tell my why the referees do not crack down on all the shirt pulling, arm holding, and general obstruction that goes on at corner kicks and free kicks into the penalty area. They need to give a few free kicks for obstruction, that would soon stop it. Or do we need another ref to keep an eye on this sort of stuff.

Forest, County and Mansfield all winning on the same day in a traditional 3:00pm kick off.
A long time since that happened

Like Steve, back in the sixties the Goose Fair was for me, all about the smells and the sounds. The smell of the diesel exhausts and the hot oil smell and noise from the engines of the generators mixed with the smells of candy floss, brandy snaps, peas with mint sauce. Unlike FLY2 #305 I could not get on with whelks, like chewing car tyres but loved cockles and mussels when you could get them. The music was all about Buddy Holly, Johnny and the Hurricanes and other rock and rollers of the era.

Ian, around 1966/7 I think, I know it was after I had started work.
I wish I could get a nice piece of gammon for Saturday lunch but the butchers here have no idea what it is.

I have just done it for 1972 the year we got married and bought our first house
Average House $6008 - spot on what we paid.
Average Salary $1351, it does not say if it was pre or post tax - I earned $2000 before tax
Average New car $1240 don't know could never afford a new car.
Petrol price - spot on we used to get three gallons for a quid.
With interest rates heading north of 14% and inflation at 10% had all on paying the mortgage. At the end of the first year I think I owned the door knocker.

I agree with you Ian. Topics that ask for favourites are difficult. The whole experience of the moment helps define what becomes a "favourite" The place, the people, the occasion, the food, the drinks, the weather and of course the music. Memories are triggered by many things and favourites vary depending upon inputs. For example whenever I have an Irish coffee I am transported back to the Berni Inn at The Chateau and the beach Boys singing God Only Knows, one of my many favourite bands.

Came across this website which claims to show the value of things in past years and then compares them to the cost of things today dependent on the area of the UK you were living in. (East Midlands is one)
Have a play and see how accurate you think it is.

I think I read somewhere that the medals for Tokyo in 2020 are going to be made from recycled materials, the gold/silver? coming from E-waste from mobile phones/computers etc. A great idea.
I am sure that there are many on here that remember the 1964 games in Tokyo. I can remember Ann Packer winning a shock gold medal in the 800 metres.
The year before the Olympics Kyu Sakamoto released his song Sukiyaki (Ue o Muite Aruko - I look up as I Walk) which somehow I always seem to associate, incorrectly, with the Tokyo Olympics?

You are quite correct in that Nottingham's water comes from the Bunter sandstone. Papplewick still pumps this water and mixes it with water from the Derwent Valley reservoirs to supply the surrounding district.
Papplewick Pumping Station has a museum and regularly steams the Victorian beam engines. It is a magnificently restored facility and well worth a visit.

Benjamin1945 #41 The photo at #20 is taken from the Swan Hotel looking down Bridge Street towards St Peters church. The 8 Bells used to be on the right, the next pub down, at the bottom was the Ramme Inn and round the corner on the left was the Bridge Tavern that used to get regularly flooded.
The off licence is still there as shown on Google street view in June this year.

A Shark alarm at Bondi Beach in Sydney sent everyone rushing from the water except for three young boys who didn't hear the siren. Onlookers were horrified to see a dorsal fin moving fast towards them. Suddenly, a tall bloke took a deep breath, dived into the surf, swam past the shark, and scooped up two of the boys, swiftly bringing them to the shore and safety. He then took another deep breath and swam out again, snatching the third boy before the rapidly approaching, shark could attack and got him back to the beach in one piece. The heroic bloke then put a knife between his clenched teeth, swam out to the shark, and killed it in a furious battle. As he staggered out from the surf, bleeding and battered, a journalist raced up to him and said, That was the most heroic thing I've ever witnessed mate. This will appear on the front page of tomorrow's newspaper: Aussie hero saves three boys from killer shark! Thanks. Smiles the fella, but I'm not an Aussie. I'm a British backpacker from Bulwell. No worries, said the journalist with a frown, it'll still be front-page news. The next day, the newspaper headline screamed, Pommy bastard kills boy's pet fish!

Hi Ian - No Bulwell and from views expressed here no-one will be disappointed

Just thought you would like to know that a Mansfield lass Suzanne Balogh won gold in the Trap shooting at the Rio games.
Suzanne comes from Mansfield in Victoria, a small town in the foothills of the Australian Alps named after Mansfield in Notts.
One of many towns and suburbs named after Nottinghamshire suburbs or villages. Newstead, Sherwood and Rainworth can all be found in Brisbane.

Nope! Only one Member shown in Adelaide but not me

The technical coverage of the Rio games is brilliant but I just wish the stupid talking heads would stop calling them heroes. They just happen to be able to run, jump, kick, hit, throw or stand still better than the average Joe, but heroes they aint.
Heroes are those among us who daily put their lives on the line for us, the active armed forces, the emergency services, civil rescue etc.

Carni, Your description of mode is mathematically correct.
The "Mode" when applied to digital cameras usually means a setting at which the camera automatically selects what it believes are the best settings for the type of photo that you are taking.
Some examples are Manual, Portrait, Landscape, Beach/Ocean, Sports, Night, Sunrise/Sunset Animals, Flowers, etc.etc. Generally the more sophisticated a camera the more modes it has.
Most modern cameras have far more capability than most of us will ever use.

Used to dilute potassium permanganate crystals in water and then sprinkle it on the lawn. Apparently it made the worms "itch" and they came to the surface. Then we just picked them up, an easy way to get bait for fishing.
