  1. If your father worked in one of the local pits do you remember the "Pit Trip" where all the kids all went to the seaside for a day trip.

The men all contributed a small amount from their wages and on one day a year we all went on the train to the seaside. I know at some pits the trains left from the pit yards to far away places like Skegness, Mabelthorpe, and even as far as Cleethorpes (uggh).

We all had vouchers for pop and crisps on the train and many spent the journey with their heads hanging out of the windows on the doors.

The day involved a very early start, the journey to the coast, morning on the sands struggling with deck chairs and wind breaks, making sand castles and if you were brave a dip in the sea. Fish, chips, peas, bread and butter and a pot of tea in a café for lunch and a pint or two for the men in the nearest pub.

Then on to the amusement park and boating lake with yet more vouchers. Buying rock novelties

My day usually finished with a sand fight on the beach with your mates, concealing the odd stone inside the "sand bomb" and aimed at someone to get even for something that happened through the year.

The journey home was usually quiet as many of the younger ones fell asleep and strangely enough I can't seem to remember a pit trip that we got rained on?

  2. I am surprised the PC brigade have not censored some of the children's programs.

The Magic Roundabout with Zebedee telling everyone "It's time for bed"

In the Night Garden with Upsy Daisy taking her bed everywhere she goes makes you wonder about her profession. The Pontipines and Wottingers two families of ten that look very similar?

    Not to mention IgglePiggle's Tiddle?

Andy, Teddy and Looby Loo all living in a picnic basket, what was that all about?

Alas! the age of innocence long gone.

  3. I am like banjo48 and rarely watch commercial tv and the few programs we do watch regularly we record and skip through the ads.

However when I do see the adverts I become more and more bemused and at times really struggle to work out what they are advertising as there often seems no connection between the ad and the product.

Car ads really p**s me of when in small print they say something like "foreign vehicle shown, this model not available in Australia" Why show me the bl**dy pictures then?

  4. From the 60's

Cathy's Clown - Everly Brothers - A caravan holiday at "Jinglebells", Ingoldmells in 1960

Wonderful Land - The Shadows - A café in Strasbourg 1964, the smell of freshly ground coffee and Gitanes French cigarettes

Mr. Tambourine Man - The Byrds - Doing a British Canoe Federation coaching course at the swimming pool at Dukeries Comprehensive school and in the Trent at Averham in late 1965, bl**dy freezing in the river but the pool was nice and warm.

Whiter Shade of Pale - Procol Harum - 1967 Playing the pinball machine in the back room of the Queens Head in Mansfield (alas now long gone)

  5. When I was about 10 or 11 mum and dad bought me a Raleigh Trent Tourist bike for Christmas. Went all over Notts and even as far as Lincoln on it. It had trigger operated Sturmey Archer 3 speed gears ( I think that the latter ones had a twist grip gear change on the handlebars) and a front wheel hub dynamo for the lights. It was a good solid bike and my dad used it for years after I left home, married and bought a car.

  6. I agree benjamin1945, Jimmy Greaves was a goal poacher extraordinaire and it is good to hear that he may be making a public appearance in a few days following continued recovery from his stoke.

I still think he mishit the shot but that may have been looking through Garibaldi tinted glasses, but no doubt about the four he scored for Chelsea against the Reds in 60/61? I was too young to be biased then. Nevertheless I wish him well in his recovery.

  7. I was at the City Ground the day that Everton's Brian Labone axed Zigger Zagger, did not even get a free kick (He would have been sent off these days) I thought they were heading for a replay at Goodison but Ian Storey-Moores hat trick got them through to the semi at Hillsboro vs Spurs. As usual "Noddy" Hinton never got his shorts dirty.

I must have been on cloud nine as me and some mates walked all the way back to Huntingdon Street, reliving what we had just seen, to get the bus home

I remember queing all night along the wall at the back of the Trent End stand to get my ticket for the semi. Jimmy Greaves scored

what must have been one of the jamiest goals of his life, I am sure he mishit the shot that beat Grummitt for the first goal.

Alas the double was not to be but that team was one of Forest's best ever

  8. Ayeupmeducks #15 We lived in the south of Sydney at the time and we and our kids were on North 'Gong beach every weekend, and like you and poohbear#12 I can vividly remember where I was when Kennedy was assassinated, and when Armstrong set foot on the moon, but for the life of me cannot fix where I was when I heard the news about Lennon.

Strangely enough I can remember exactly where I was when the Aussies won the Americas Cup in September 1983.

Another September date fixed in my mind is 11 September 2001 (9/11) I had fallen asleep in the lounge chair with the TV on and awoke to what I thought was a film, unfortunately it was all too real.

  9. Re Benjamin 1945 #102

Can anyone remember the last time Forest, Stags and County all won on the same day and had the traditional 3pm kick off time?

Carni #101, can you remember Forest paying 100,000 quid for Jim Baxter in December 1967. One of the most skilful players ever to wear the famous Garibaldi red shirt.

  10. Mick, Bubblewrap.

If you missed the one you'll never get another one

    Bee-dee Bee-dee Bom-bom to San Fernando - Johhny Duncan

Don't suppose The Last Train to Clarksville - The Monkees would be any good either

or The Last Train to Dobcross - Oldham Tinkers

This site often sends me off on tangents. I've just spent an hour on YouTube listening to "Last Train" songs found 20 without too much effort.

  11. Hi Technology fans.

Has anyone on here had any experience running Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Premier (both Elements 10) on Windows 10.

I have looked on a number of sites and the responses are mixed, from no problems to won't work.

FYI I will put the same post on the photography thread

    Thanks

  12. Bubblewrap #50

Thanks for posting. So many things in those scenes that we have forgotten and now remembered by way of a jigsaw!

Love the one of the coalman taking the sack around the back for the next door neighbours. I did not like that innovation as is did me out of a bob my dad gave me to take the coal round the back to the coal 'us after it had been tipped on the road outside the house.

  13. I wonder if you folks have come across this site before, my guess is that you have but just in case you haven't

    http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=16&lat=53.1391&lon1.2192&layers=171

It is currently centered on Mansfield because that's where it was set to resolve a disagreement with my brother but it is easy to move around and the brilliant feature is that you can superimpose today over the old maps all over the UK
