Did it have any connection with Pretty Polly?

No Jill, Pretty Polly was on Unwin Road Sutton in Ashfield. Closed in 2005, alas long gone, now a Lidl and housing. even the Masons Arms (The Elbow) at the end of Unwin Rd looks as if it is closed for good.

They say Lidl will employ 40 people, Pretty Polly employed a thousand! The flat earth economists and joe public have a lot of blame associated with the demise of UK industry.

  2. A second string team hammered 4-0 by Wolves at the City Ground

    BBC Nottingham sports report says

Nottingham Forest boss Chris Hughton: "I am incredibly proud of this young group, who would have been excited when they saw the team Wolves put out.

"We had to rely on Ethan Horvath to make some excellent saves. Two of the goals were quite soft and, without those, it would have been a credible result for a side that included seven academy lads.

"We held them for an hour. I am proud tonight; prouder than I was when we beat Bradford in the first round. We had to work really hard for possession. We will learn immensely from this game."

What is this guy doing? It was an opportunity for the first team players to learn how to work as a unit, gain some confidence and hopefully trigger a climb away from relegation, which i am sad to say at this point in time looks inevitable.

If the first team players do not perform then yes put the young guys in and I would rather them go down whilst gaining experience and building for the future rather than having a team of overpaid failures just turning up without any passion for the club.

Must admit I had a little cry when I heard that news this morning - they played a bit of Cathy‘S Clown on the TV and that was one off my all time favourites.,.

Fond memories of Cathy's Clown on a caravan holiday at Jinglebells in 1960, their harmonies were just fantastic.

So sad I loved them. Was Don the eldest or Phil. R.I.P.

Don was the eldest, being born in 1937 and Phil who died in 2014 was born in 1939

Another fading of the soundtrack of my youth.

  4. Yet another loss now ten games without a win!

According to BBC Nottingham only 2 shots in the whole game and none of those on target. Being able to score has long been a problem for the Reds so what did we recruit during the off season....... defenders.

About time for the board and  owner to be changed.

  5. A 2-1 home loss to Blackburn Rovers, looks like they will be greasing the bearings on the revolving door to the managers office again. This time there should be a total clearout of all those that are consistently underperforming, players, staff, board and manager. As I have said before there is something fundamentally wrong at the City Ground but I can't quite put my finger on what it is. They have not won in nine games and still struggle to score. It is going to be a hard season.

    Billy Walker.

He was the manager when I first started watching the Reds as a littl'un in the mid fifties. His goal scoring record for Aston Villa still stands to this day. According to my 1959 Football Annual he was the the first player to score a goal at Wembley Stadium.

  7. The new season has not started well for the Reds 2 games, 2 losses. I remember years ago the recipe for doing well was win at home and draw away. I hope this is not the start of another struggle season.

Meanwhile back at Field Mill under Clough junior the Stags have started with two wins.

  8. We decided to have lamb chops, new potatoes and garden peas with mint sauce for tea last night.

Fired up the barbie for the chops whilst her indoors did the vegies. As new potatoes are not in season and when they are are very difficult to get the small ones so we had tinned ones.. The lamb was local, as were the peas, the potatoes were quite nice but were marked produce of France! Here in South Australia we grow 80% of Australia's potatoes, what has gone wrong when produce that we grow in abundance cannot be processed and canned in Australia and we have to ship it half way across the planet?

  9. The whole shemozzle re Australia's vaccination roll out continues and the difference between how states are responding to it is staggering.

An Australian update for those with family and friends in OZ.

The Brisbane and near area of Queensland is currently in lock-down and talking about reducing restrictions or coming out of lock-down this weekend and today reported 10 cases.

The whole state of Victoria has just gone into its' 6th lock-down with 10 reported cases.

The most populous areas of NSW's coast including greater Sydney are in lock-down and likely to remain so for several weeks with 291 cases and sadly an increasing death toll.

The Northern Territory has reported 1 case which is in a quarantine facility.

South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania and the ACT have not reported any cases in the last few days.

Guess what, each state and territory has its own website and they are not in a standard format and on some it is extremely difficult to find out what you want to know re travel restrictions and data etc.

It is becoming obvious that the major population centres cannot continue with on again off again lock-down and restrictions.

We still have only 16.3% of our population fully vaccinated and this failure is 100% due to the Scott Moronson Federal LNP government. The fact that it put all its eggs in the AZ vaccine basket, did not purchase sufficient quantities of any alternate vaccines and then due to its incompetence ran a very effective scare campaign against the use of AZ for under 60's. They are now running round like chooks with no heads exhorting people to get vaccinated with any available vaccine if they understand the risks and sit there wondering why there is a reluctance by some people to get vaccinated with AZ. I just hope people remember this at next years Federal election.

My wife and I had our second AZ vaccination yesterday and absolutely no adverse reactions so hopefully some time next year we will be able to get to the UK.

When will people realise that being vaccinated does work

With almost 50% of the Australian population in Sydney and Brisbane in relatively tight lockdown the queues to get tested are miles long and suddenly people want to get vaccinated. One problem though, not enough of the Pfizer vaccine after this stupid federal government scared everyone away from using the AZ version. Many people in our area that have just become eligible for a vaccination are being told none available until late Sept early Oct.

On a brighter note nonna B after that great win in the hundred metres final by the Italian sprinter Lamont Marcel Jacobs I heard an interview with his mother, what an amazing, proud but humble person.

R I think you are younger than the generation that loved messing about with cars and engines in their youth.

MargieH, for me  it was a "had to do" as I could never afford to get a garage to do the work for me and yes I had a Haynes Workshop Manual for it which I still have somewhere.

I also bought a Haynes manual for it.

  12. Anyone watching the Olympics? I can't help feeling sorry for Japan investing all that money and no-one allowed to come and watch. There is always the TV or PPV/Streaming services

The leader of the opposition has commandeered the TV and I have attempted to watch it but have now given up far too many adverts and talking heads and not enough sport. What is the coverage like in the UK?

The stupid burghers of Brisbane have won the rights to bankrupt the city for the 2032 games. No one else was dumb enough to put in a bid.

I hope that the experiences of this year finally puts an end to the "Limp Dick" games for once and all, it has become an obscene money grabbing exercise by those that build the white elephant stadiums and facilities, contract for the services, play mines bigger than yours for extravagent opening and closing ceremonies and leaves the host city in debt for a generation. We will not have paid off the covid debt by then.

It is long past the time to get rid of the self appointed IOC. I wonder too how many medals will be tainted by drug use as the testing regime has been severley curtailed due to covid?
