It's ten years since I retired and at that time, we were seeing wholesale closures of Further Education colleges. Blunkett for Labour had all but neutered the World's best Career Guidance system and Gove reduced it to a rump

The experience in the UK is mirrored here in Australia'

In 2019 the incoming Liberal State government closed seven TAFE (Technical and Further Education) campuses across South Australia and privatised the system leading to widespread rorts and students being ripped off. This was done under the guise of "operating efficiencies" and effectively gutted the system and left it as a shell.

Fast forward to 2023/4 and we now have 10,000+ fee free places and they are building five new technical colleges, the first opened earlier this year.

The big wheel keeps on turning or Back to the Future.

We are in the midst of a crucial by-election in the state seat of Dunstan formerly held by the ex State Liberal (Conservative) leader who is leaving parliament after losing the last election after only one term in office. So far the debate appears to be just about mudslinging, trying to see how much sticks to which candidate and almost no policy debate. Is this what our democracy has come down to?

Forest live to fight another day.

Sadly Lizzie, I can only hope that Forest don't have a seat booked in the tumbril. I think it is just a reprieve until the guillotine falls on Friday.

But this link below is, surprisingly, from a US Govt. website and has some interesting  long-term analysis of the rise of the Tory Right.

A very interesting article DJ360. I'd be curious to know how much interest the average Joe has in Nigel Farage and the growth of the more extreme right-wing element within the conservative side of government. I look forward to the upcoming UK general election to see how this pans out.

The leader of our Federal opposition coalition parties Liberal/National is part of the right-wing faction, I would not say extreme, as yet, and am curious how our 2025 election turns out especially if Trump becomes US President again.

  4. Forest - Luton did not further damage Forest's chances of staying up as they lost 4-3 away against AFC Bournemouth. A game in which Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo scored a hat trick.

Someone on this thread said the decision on the penalty for breaking the financial guidelines was due to be handed down on Friday. Minus six points would make it a struggle to survive given their current form and minus 10 points would mean it is all over red rover. Luton vs Forest at Kenilworth Park on Saturday. A "six pointer" if ever there was one.

  5. County - Fall further down the ladder to 17th place after losing 2-1 away at Crawley Town. They took the lead in the 20th minute with a goal from Sam Austin, they held the lead until the 79th minute when Crawley equalised. Crawley took the lead 5 minutes later to take the points. Crawley received 5 yellow cards and County played the last 18 minutes 1 man down after Scott Robinson received a second yellow card and was sent off. I think Maynard is on very shaky ground at the moment. Away at Accrington Stanley on Saturday.

Stags- Away at Prenton Park with Tranmere Rovers just above County on the ladder Stags lost 2-1. Tranmere went ahead in the 12th minute with a goal from Regan Hendry. Will Swan put Stags on equal footing five minutes before half time.

Robert Hapter scored the winner for Tranmere in the 57th minute. Stags remain at the top but now only two points clear of Wrexham who were held to 0-0 home draw with Harrowgate Town. Stockport County are looming as a threat as they are only 3 points behind the Stags with two games in hand. It is going to be a titanic battle for the top spot. Stags away at Bradford City on Saturday.

  6. Didn't know who the landlord/landlady was. Just knew that a pint of Kimberley mild was very welcome at lunchtime on a hot day. I seem to remember that you went in a door at the side (car park) and were served through a hatch so you did not have to go inside in you fishing gear. My mum liked a glass of Blackamoor Sweet Stout and lemonade whenever we were out for a Sunday drive and stopped at a Kimberley pub.

Difficult to disagree.  I'm sure Kate is a lovely girl, but the royal switch from ostentatious privelege  to 'just 'like us', is hard to swallow. Of course they are just like us, except that they live in a cocooned environment of privelege and wealth.

The main stream media here in Oz have got their knickers in a knot over a photoshopped photograph taken and altered by Princess Kate. There are all sorts of conspiracy theories flying around. Why do they go nuts on this sensationalism when the average Joe public does not care who did what to whom and when, they are all too busy trying to survive price rises to bother with this garbage. Is it the same in the UK?

  8. I have just read an article on what the public think about our two major political parties. In the comments I came across this sentence.

"Our democracy is broken. Infected by an insiduous political virii. We are in the midst of a political pandemic."

Not knowing the word virii I looked it up and found this on Wiki

    • The plural virii, though common, is based on a misunderstanding of Latin. In classical Latin, virus appears to be a singulare tantum without any attested plural. If virus were a masculine 2nd declension noun, it would form its plural with a singular -i as viri. In fact as a neuter 2nd declension noun, in New Latin, the plural is formed as vira.

Bl**dy hell I'm glad I never did Latin. I sometimes have enough problems with English.

  9. I remember the bailiff, he used to come round about 11:00am and then just after 3:00pm closing at the pub. He remembered if you were there on his first visit and soon spotted anyone new. I think that stretch of water "belonged" to a fishing club from Nottingham

  10. Looking back to when we left the UK and bringing up three kids in OZ we just had one small galvanised rubbish bin and it held all our rubbish for the week.

Today we have three bins one bin collects almost exclusively packaging for recycling as everything comes in cartons, boxes, trays and heavy blister packs.

Back in the day paper and cardboard would have gone on the coal fire or in the garden incinerator. Garden waste would have been put in the compost heap and then back on the garden. Today we seem to be inundated with P.E.T soft drink bottles in our waste streams, are we drinking so much more of this evil stuff? As a kid it was council pop from the tap or hose pipe, occasionally some orange cordial and as a special treat a bottle of dandelion and burdock, lime or cherryade from the Corona or Redgates man.

  11. Now I am retired and due to the casual lifestyle here in OZ I only have 3 semi formal shirts, the rest are collared casual polo shirts, the same goes for tailored trousers and I no longer own a suit. Summer wear is usually a T shirt and shorts, winter is cotton track suit pants with a fleece top. I don't own an overcoat. A drizabone oilskin jacket suffices for a cold rainy day when I am outside.

You can purchase day tickets at Fiskerton shop. You can fish for free on the Embankment but would you want to?

Back in the day I used to love fishing at Fiskerton, you bought your day ticket at the Bromley Arms. My favourite spot was the "beach" at the end of the wall in the direction of Hazelford. You had to watch out for the John Harker barges ast they would was your gear away. It was quite an expedition to get there as the MDT bus service through Fiskerton, the 209, was only every two hours. The luggage space under the stairs was often rammed with fishing boxes and baskets, rods were usually with you in your seat due to risk of damage. The bus ride was quite pleasant, through, Farnsfield, Edingley, Halam, Southwell and on to Fiskerton. On days when you could not get a peg on the beach we often walked round to the bottom of Hazelford weir.

  13. In our council area we have three bins, A green lidded 240 litre bin for garden waste, lawn clippings, weeds, prunings etc.  a yellow lidded recycling bin for waste paper, cardboard, plastics etc. These are collected every second week, our general waste bin, 120 litre, is collected on alternate weeks to the others.

There are a couple of things that come into play.

    1. Very few soft drink and beer bottles and cartons ever end up in the recycling bin as they have a 10 cent deposit on them and people save them and take them to a collection centre to get their money back. Remember the three pence deposit on pop bottles all those years ago.
    2. We are allowed to put food scraps and vegetable peelings in our green waste bin. We pay for the council to collect these via our rates, they then process the waste into mulch and we can then buy it back from the council for our gardens. What a great business model.

This often means they're embarrassed at the cost overrun and would risk voter confidence if they made the figures public. There should be no such thing for any non national security organisation that spends tax payers money.

Spending money to promote an event and encourage visitors is understandable.

Is there an FOI in Australia?

Unless we're talking big numbers and it's to reduce the congestion they can cause, the logic of providing free transport just for ticket holders escapes me .

Posting on here Qz is fine and you make good points but i's doubtful if anyone over there will read it, have you sent the same to your local officials? You'll probably get the same smarmy reply I do but at least it salves my  conscience that I'm not just sat on my A... doing nothing.

Brew, In answer to your comments.

There is FOI in Australia, but responses are often heavily redacted claiming and confidentiality, security and any other nefarious reason they can think of to not give us the information.

I strongly object to using taxpayers money to entice sporting celebrities and entities to our state. If their offering is so good they would not need government support.

The AFL season runs from now until September, The Adelaide oval holds 40,000 people if 30% of the crowd use public transport on free tickets that is 24,000 free trips each week for 24 weeks. With two teams using this transport that is almost 600,000 free trips.

I regularly send requests for information to our local and other parliamentarians both State and Federal and usually receive wishy-washy responses that do not answer the questions posed. I communicate with the local media (ABC Radio) on issues they cover. I do so in the forlorn hope that one day someone will listen and act, I doubt it but it does make me feel better in that at least I am doing something.

  15. Saw something on our local news tonight that made my blood boil and makes me want to take a piece of 4x2 to see if I can knock some sense and reality into our State Labor premier and his ministers in government.

Today the state government announced that bus and train travel would be free to all patrons going to the Adelaide oval for the AFL season that hold a match ticket. How much is this going to cost? I doubt if they will tell us.

This announcement comes on top of the government spending millions in sponsorship to get interstate AFL fans to come to South Australia for the "AFL Gather Round" when all AFL teams come to play here on one weekend. They have also spent millions on a V8 car race for hoons despite claiming green credentials. Millions more have been spent enticing highly paid world golfers to come here and play in a booze-fest golf tournament. The worst thing about all this is that the government is hiding this largesse from the taxpayer claiming "commercial confidence"

All this when since being elected almost exactly two years ago on a platform of ending ambulance ramping at our major hospital due to a shortage of bed availability. Since they were elected 91 South Australians have died waiting for an ambulance to get to them because they are tied up outside our hospitals. How many more ambulances and crews, hospital beds could these many millions have paid for. Since being elected ramping has gone from 2,711 hours in March 2022 to 3,690 in January 2024.

I have a simple message for our State Premier, Peter Malinauskas GET YOUR PRIORITES RIGHT

I hope the bots that crawl over this site pick up this message and feed it back to the premier and his ministers.

what are we going to do with the Red Men do you think

    1. Sack the no hopers that are currently in the team as they have no passion for the club and are only there for the cash.
    2. Develop a local/UK youth policy, Forest were at their best when they developed local talent and took them through to the first team.
    3. Buy "that man" Macauley Langstaff from Notts and Davis Keilor-Dunn from the Stags and give them a go.
    4. Stop importing unproven expensive international "talent" many of whom are not up to the standard required for the EPL.
    5. Do a full review of player recruitment staff and methods as it obviously has been a failure.
    6. Sack Nuno and his hangers on now, and get him to take his book of 1,001 excuses with him, he has been a complete failure. Any suggestions for a new manager?
    7. Find out who was responsible for breaching the EPL's financial rules and who sanctioned those actions, and get rid of them, as they could well send Forest down to the Championship.

I would rather see Forest get relegated playing some youths with passion rather than those who at the moment are only going through the motions to collect their wages.

    a great, original video

There are some interesting interpretation of some of the lyrics in Penny Lane.

Definitely the best ever Beatles "single" as it had Strawberry Fields Forever as its 'B' side

Most Beatles fans know that the Number 46 Liverpool Corporation bus went to Penny Lane, fewer knew that the 73A also went via Penny Lane as did the 77. I learned these useful facts from trivia nights at the pub

    How about Caerphilly?

Caerphilly cheese was the only cheese my dad ever took in his "snap tin" down t'pit. He always said it was made especially for the miners in South Wales and did not sweat in the hot areas of the mine.

  19. Forest - Go down 1-0 away at Brighton with Andrew Omobamidele scoring an unfortunate own goal in the 29th minute. Forest could have equalised immediately after the goal but Origi could not beat the Brighton 'keeper in a one-on-one situation. Forest never really looked like scoring apart from one chance by Chris Woods that brought a fingertip save from Verbruggen, and the Seagulls dominated possession ensuring Forest's chances were few and far between. Forest are 17th on the ladder three points above Luton who they play on Saturday. To say it is a must win game is an understatement, as if they lose Luton will go above them on goal difference and Forest will be in one of the relegation places. There are now only ten games left for Forest to turn things round and quite frankly under Nuno things are getting worse and I wonder which one from his book of 1,001 excuses he will trot out today. Any points penalty is certain to see them relegated and even without any penalty, unless something changes, it is looking likely.

  20. County - Trying to work out what has gone wrong at Meadow Lane. They have the leagues joint top scorer, Macauley Langstaff with 23, and he could have easily added to his tally against AFC Wimbledon. Daniel Crowley comes in at 13th place with 13 and David McGoldrick at 16th with 12 goals making up a total of 69 goals. Second highest in the league and only 3 less than the Stags who top the table. The problem is that they have leaked 68 goals, the second worst in the league. Can Stuart Maynard do anything to arrest the slide. if so what? They have not won at Meadow Lane this year. How long will the Reedzt brothers put up with this level of performance? My guess is not too much longer.

  21. A correction to the Stags report Stockport scored a late goal, 90+3, against Newport County to go second, three points behind Stags with a game in hand but with a nine goal disadvantage on goal difference.

  22. County - Crumble to another defeat 0-2 at Meadow Lane. An unfortunate own goal by Cornell Rawlinson in the 80th minute after coming on as a substitute in the 60th minute. AFC Wimbledon put the game beyond doubt 5 minutes from the end with a goal from K. Balmer. Since Williams left County's performances have been erratic at best and from being genuine contenders at the start of the season are now also rans in 15th place. AFC Wimbledon collected 5 yellow cards throughout the game. Away at Crawley Town on Tuesday evening. I am not sure how long Maynard will survive.

Stags of to a flying start with a goal from Lucas Atkins in the 4th minute. A dour first half followed. The game was shaken up by 4 goals in seventeen minutes. Swindon equalised in the 50th minute but Stags regained the lead one minute later by "their man" Davis Keillor-Dunn. Swindon drew level again 8 minutes later and it was left to Will Swan to seal the 3-2 win for the Stags at Field Mill with his goal. The win keeps Stags on top of the table 3 points clear of Wrexham having played the same number of games. Away at Tranmere Rovers on Tuesday evening
