  1. I had a red Raleigh Trent Tourist all steel frame heavy as hell. Dynamo in the front hub for the lights and a bloody useless Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub. Probably due to the weight of the frame more that a failing in the hub.  I see they are now making 8 speed hubs, now that may have been useful

The words are taken from the Bible .... Ecclesiastes 3 verses 1 - 8 which is sometimes quoted at funerals

Pete Seeger wrote the song and as you say the words they can be found in the King James version of the bible 1611.

Being an atheist and never studying the bible I never knew that but I can relate to the sentiments expressed.

As I often say you never stop learning.

like many others I started with a Zenith E

Welcome Fairlad, I too started with a Zenith E. A passion of mine was and still is sports photography. I invested some money on a 1000mm folded light lens which had a rifle stock to help you hold it still. When we came to Oz I still had that camera and the light meter went to places it had never seen in the UK. Much used severely abused and never stopped working, not surprising as it was built like a brick sh*t house. The mirror going up made a satisfying clunk much like closing the door on a prestige car.

I am a Nikon user these days.

  4. The death of Trevor Peacock the very versatile and accomplished actor who is best known to us as Jim Trott a parish councilor in the Vicar of Dibley has been announced.

He wrote words and lyrics for many musicals and also Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter for Herman's Hermits. (one of our Ben's favourites)

According to his obituary he was also a talented footballer and went for a trial with Spurs but chose to go into theatre, for the benefit of us all.

  5. Many thanks Stuart.C.

Sadly it looks so utilitarian, no style in the buildings at all, just uninspiring cubes of glass and concrete with facings.

The planners have slowly destroyed a beautiful city and unfortunately we let them and now can never get it back.

Does the city council have a farm somewhere where they plant road sign seeds and grow them until they are big enough to be put out in the streets?

I was 19 and lodging in Coalville at big Maude's.......remember friday nights dancing to this at the ''West end Club''

Love the jangly guitar intro, it takes me right back to April 1965. I was doing a British Canoe Union? coaching course at the time. The Trent was not particularly warm at that time of year, I much preferred the sessions in the swimming pool.

  7. At our last two storey home we used a hose on product called Glitz. I found it brilliant, it removed dirt and dust and salt spray also. It dried without any streaks or water spots.

Don't have to use it now we have a single storey home and can reach all the windows from ground level and now use Windex - ammonia free.

Worked on Church street Marsdens and Queen street Vernons  early 60s

The Queens Head almost opposite Vernons was a cracking pub a fine pint of Mansfield bitter. Alas the pub is no longer and according to the locals the beer now brewed in Burton is nothing like it used to be.

Went to Blidworth Bottoms once in 1964

Probably in the Fox and Hounds car park, in those days it was a Kimberley pub, didn't mind a pint of their mild. It appears that it has now become a sort of gastro pub like the Black Bull a former Shippo's pub at the top of Field Lane on the way back into the village

  9. When I was working in Indonesia, predominantly a Muslim country and of course no pig products. At the hotel we were staying at they offered a bacon substitute for breakfast which was actually thinly sliced beef sprinkled with a powder that tasted like bacon. I never did find out what it actually was. I guess it was like the stuff they put on crisps to make them taste like smokey bacon.

  10. One of the big burger chains here is pushing its new plant based burger saying it tastes just like a real "whopper".

Like BK says why would a vegan want a burger that tastes like beef and how would they know what a beefburger tastes like anyway?

If they are trying to convince the non vegans among us to eat plant based beef then they have got hold of the wrong end of the stick.

By the way I am a vegetarian, I only eat animals that eat grass.
